S.T.E.M. is a hoax
Entrepreneurship, education and the future of work, with Steve Sammartino

S.T.E.M. is a hoax

with Steve Sammartino

STEM is a total hoax. Why? STEM is for THEM. We can have all the technology in the world we want — all the maths, all the engineering — but if you don’t have the economic understanding of revenue flows, and the demands of what people want, building it and bringing it to market, there won’t ever be another job.

Futurist Steve Sammartino, author of “The Lessons School Forgot”, pulls no punches in sharing his journey from school to work and beyond. Take note; there are lessons here for teachers and students alike. Steve is passionate communicator, educating the world about business and the future, with three great shorts which bring his insights to life.

Listen to the full, 1/2hr podcast or watch 10min highlights on YouTube. Extra insights about optimism, goal-setting, the freedom-security scale and Elon Musk v Mark Zuckerberg on ‘Super-AI’ in the bonus conversation.

Here's a few lessons from the short films Steve chose...

One-minute time machine

  • Life is full of second-chances
  • Caution: as we rush forward to advance technology, don't ignore problems left in our wake

Sight

  • Science is a 'fork in the road'. What direction we choose to take with it is up to us, so let's make these decisions carefully
  • Sci-fi helps us imagine the future

Pixels

  • A case-study in the value of 'side projects'. Many great things come from small ideas done just for fun. Pixels led to a feature film of the same name
  • Historically, the 'digitization of everything' began in the 1980s

Disclosure statement:

Steve Sammartino does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organization that would benefit from the review of these particular short films, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations.

Other notes and links from the show

  • Steve’s website: stevesammartino.com
  • His new book “The Lessons School Forgot
  • Steve suggests replacing S.T.E.M. with E.S.T.E.E.M.: Economics Science Technology Entrepreneurship Engineering & Math
  • Steve loves art. He’s not a complete economic rationalist ratbag, despite what host Richard thought after reading this blog post of his!
  • Art is not just paint on canvas, music on radios, films on screen. In an age when all the business models around art are breaking down, artists like Bansky remind us of what art can be, and the social function in can have
  • In the bonus conversation, Steve mentions the precautionary principle, by Nassim Taleb and Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom.

Thanks Steve Sammartino - really enjoyed the chat, and re-packaging your insights. There's a few more bits to come (some extras that got cut from this 1/2hr version AND the highlights video on YouTube next week). Hope the book's still going well!
