Maryland Leadership Workshops

MLW is Maryland’s premier leadership development program for middle and high school students and has provided generations of participants - who we call delegates - with an incomparable experience to discover and develop strengths and skills essential to lifelong leadership.  Using the model of facilitative instruction unique among youth leadership programs, delegates take ownership of personal development as they grow in self-awareness, set measurable goals, and collaborate with peers in diverse groups.

Whether students are already experienced leaders or still not sure what path to take, MLW helps them identify thier strengths and gives each student the opportunity to develop new skills. Through discussion units, team projects and taking part in shaping the week-long program, delegates are exposed to new ideas and get hands-on practice with useful skills.

Unlike most summer programs, the MLW staff, the majority of whom were once delegates, train and prepare for hundreds of hours over approximately eight weeks for the one-week program.  From the moment they are hired, staff work on curriculum, project plans, and workshop ideas. An important feature is incorporating feedback from previous program participants as well as senior staff who come from fields of education, social work, engineering, law and management. This iterative process and a strong commitment to staff development instills a passion and commitment to MLW that is truly inspiring.  The result: a life transforming experience for all involved.

MLW receives support from the Maryland State Department of Education and, as such, deepens and enriches students understanding and adoption of Common Core Standards.  As a Youth Certified Camp through the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, all staff are screened through a criminal background check process and are trained on emergency procedures.

Life at GLI

We appreciate that you’ve chosen to take part in GLI. In return, we will give you choices. For example, you can choose your afternoon art project and you can choose what kind of fitness you are in the mood for or evening activity. Life here is definitely different from spending the summer at home; you get up early, go all day, leave your cell phone behind, share stories and opinions, and live with other girls. It is an intense, fun and transformative three weeks that makes you want to come back next year and do it all over again.

Workshops

These workshops are designed to meet the needs and the interests of our oldest campers. This program also asks you to think deeply about what influences you, and the kind of relationships you really want for yourself. We will ask you to reflect on your choices and then push yourself to look at the emotions and thoughts behind those choices. Workshops include: Increasing Your Emotional Intelligence, Ending Blame, Three Reactions To Criticism, Overcoming Assumptions, Good Girl vs. Great Leader, Taking Charge of Your Internal Voice and more.

Project

Guided by teaching artists, campers play, improvise and create unique works of art. Last summer’s projects included photography, Girls Make Movies, theater and improvisation, creative writing, sculpture and more.

Trips and Events

There are both challenging trips and just-for-fun days. We test our teamwork skills on the low-ropes course and face our own fears on the high ropes. There are river crossing and raft building challenges to try out the communication and collaboration skills we’ve been practicing in workshops.

For fun, we head to a lake to relax and enjoy magazines, music and a bag of Twizzlers. We may walk into town for ice cream or to enjoy a matinee at a local theater.

Arts Intensive

You’re creative, brilliant and ready to explore your experiences in exciting ways.   We get that.  So we’ve invited local artists, writers, and performers to guide you on a three-day weekend-long arts intensive.  The arts intensive projects allow you to recognize, honor and communicate your authentic voice through creative media.  The projects all culminate in a public celebration of artwork for your supportive camp community.

National Youth

Science Camp

The National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) is a residential science education program that honors and challenges two graduating high school science students from each state and others from selected countries around the world. Scientists from across the nation present lectures and hands-on science seminars and linger to interact informally with student delegates. Delegates are challenged to explore new areas in the biological and physical sciences, art, and music with resident staff members. Opportunities are provided for delegates to present seminars covering their own areas of interest and research. A visit to Washington D.C. permits delegates to visit some of the nation’s premier scientific, governmental, and cultural facilities. The NYSC experience includes overnight excursions into the Monongahela National Forest, featuring backpacking, rock-climbing, caving, mountain biking, and kayaking opportunities. Delegates

are required to participate in the camp program for its entirety, as the fast-paced activities and remote location make travel to and from the NYSC very difficult. More information is available online at www.nysc.org.

The NYSC will be held at a facility located in the Monongahela National Forest near Bartow in the eastern mountains of West Virginia.

Dates of the NYSC

Delegates MUST be able to attend the entire NYSC program. Delegates arrive in Charleston,

West Virginia, on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, and depart on Saturday, July 20, 2013.

Cost The National Youth Science Camp is offered at NO COST to its participants so that selected delegates may attend regardless of their financial status. All educational and recreational

programming, as well as meals, lodging, and round-trip air passage on scheduled airlines are

provided free of charge to the delegates.

Applicants

• U.S. applicants must be candidates for high school graduation between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013; International applicants must be 16 to 18 years of age during the program.

• Must demonstrate superior academic proficiency, including recognition in mathematics

and/or the sciences;

• Must demonstrate an application of leadership abilities and social maturity through

involvement in school and community activities;

• Must demonstrate skills and achievements outside the realm of science and outside the realm of academic pursuits; and

• Must demonstrate a curiosity and an eagerness to explore many and varied topics.

Application Criteria

A complete application consists of an original and one copy of the following:

1. Delegate Application Cover Sheet (please print or type),

2. A letter detailing your qualifications, how you would benefit from the NYSC experience, and your thoughts on the social impacts of science (must be typed),

3. A resume detailing your academic achievements and extra-curricular activities,

4. A recent academic transcript (including standardized test scores when possible), and

5. A letter of support from a teacher or research mentor emphasizing academic achievements, interest in sciences or mathematics, leadership potential, and well-rounded development.

Natural Resources Careers Camp (NRCC) is a great summer opportunity for Maryland high school students who are interested in forests, wildlife, or natural resources.  At NRCC, students learn about a wide range of forest, wildlife and natural resources topics with challenging hands-on lessons.  They explore careers through field and classroom experiences led by professionals currently working in the field.   College credit is available from Allegany College of Maryland, and “college night” brings representatives of colleges and university from around the region to camp to meet with students one-on-one.

This week-long residential camp will be held in Garrett County,  July 21 – July 27, 2013.  The cost is $500, with scholarships available from your local Forestry Board.
