Introduction and information
You are invited to take part in a study about music-making and enjoyment of music. This project is being undertaken by Dr Alexandra Lamont (Keele University). This version of the survey is suitable for people who are now not active in music-making. If you do currently take part in musical activities (in a group or alone) then please visit the active music making surveys: if you grew up in
the UK
,
the US
or
elsewhere
.
Before you decide whether or not you wish to take part, it is important for you to understand why this research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read this information carefully. If there is anything that is unclear or if you would like more information before proceeding, please contact me (details below).
Why have I been chosen?
You have been chosen as a person who has an active interest in music but does not currently play an instrument or sing. I am interested in collecting views from a very broad range of participants.
Do I have to take part?
You are free to decide if you wish to take part or not. If you do decide to take part you will be asked to provide your consent below. You are free to withdraw from this study at any time and without giving reason.
What will happen if I take part?
After giving your consent, you will carry out a short online survey (15-20 minutes) about your past music-making and current involvement in music. This also includes a very short personality measure.
What do I have to do?
If you are interested in participating in this study please continue to give your consent and progress to the first page of the survey.
What are the benefits of taking part?
You will discover something about your own experiences with music. You will also be contributing to the state of knowledge about how adults continue to engage with music and stop doing so, and the benefits that music brings to people's lives.
What if something goes wrong?
I don’t expect any problems to arise in this study. You have full control and choice over what information to provide.
Will my taking part be kept confidential?
All of the research data that we collect during the study will be kept strictly confidential. All participants who are quoted will be randomly given pseudonyms.
