Burns contributed 184 songs, wrote most of the prefaces to the different volumes, and may be said to have edited the work. The arrangements of the airs were prepared chiefly by Stephen Clarke. Cf. Dict. nat. biog., v. 30, p. 16

"The volumes of the Musical museum as originally published, were mbly dedicated to the Catch club, instituted at Edinburgh June 1771.' On the completion of the sixth and last volume, in1803, Johnson substituted a new set of title-pages, dedicationg the work the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.'" There was also added to a number of the songs the ascription, wanting in the earlier issue: Written for this work by Robert Burns
