I am a Cano married to an awesome Filipina and when I say this Maligayan Pasco to her friends they seem to think I am a retard. Most of my friends are married to Filipinas and not a one know the Tagalog language enough to be conversant. A few words at best. English and Tagalog are so much different and even the programs that try to teach English speakers the Tagalog language are shallow. I listen to my asawa chatting to others on the phone and can only shake my head on what is being said. Is this my fate? Just asking!
I tried to teach my husband Tagalog but failed. I gave him all the books, training DVDs, etc. but to no avail. I think the only way he can learn is if we go home to the Philippines and immerse himself in the Filipino culture and learning the language will be like a walk in the park.
I’ve lived in the Philippines for 10 years, was maried to a Filipina and after all that I can only speak enough Tagalog and the local dialect to get myself into trouble or avoid trouble and sometimes barter in the market. I do believe immersing him is the best solution hopefully no one will want to practice their English on him and will stick to one dialect not try to teach Tagalog and any of the other 100 plus dialects.
