POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have?
These sort of things are hard to value.
This cover is sadly, a bit crumpled, and has lots of tone/rust spots as can be seen.
It only has the 3 low values of the set - the key 10 Rupee very high value sadly is not there.
The 3 stamps that are there, are cat £9½ as used off cover in the very latest SG. Not long ago I'd have soaked these off if cover was so ratty, and sell as FU, but today that is not an automatic choice.
What is a fair price for this? The India market is picking up.
Indeed, to be specific, what would YOU ask for it if you were to list it for sale here.
Add your votes below to that question, and any comments you may wish.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
I know that India has gone moggie lately
The cover fits in with a couple of themes
But I STILL would only ask "about $25" - and that being a bit "cheeky"
But this is probably one of Glens "trick questions"

One of the Mittals might pay £10,000 for it but that would be the equivalent of five quid for me.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
I went for 100$ because even in a tatty state it would go for that price in bunnybay.
A cover with just a single low denomination stamp alone goes for about 30-40$ in ebay.in.
http://www.ebay.in/itm/MAHATMA-GANDHI-SPECIAL-DAY-COVER-FIRS ... 0991755488
The blank cover went for 65 AUD.
Gandhian principles dont sell these days..... But Gandhi does!!!!!!

I went for $75 because I know that this area of Indian stamps/covers has gone crazy recently on online auction sites.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
I'd go for 300$. I heard recently that any cover with 3 lower value Gandhi stamps were going for about 15000 INR. Generally these prices do not take the quality of a cover into consideration!
Collecting everything at the moment. However trying to concentrate on Czechoslovakia, India, British Commonwealth, King George VI, Machins, Music & Christmas carols.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
The Gandhi cachet on FDC is the key to this one and not the stamps.
Without any idea of rarity of that FDC it could be an almost impossible task to guess a value. Even more so if the scan was taken from eBay
However, seeing Glen has sought fit to put this one up as a poll, my guess is in the $1,000 to $2,000 range, let's say $2,000 (and even that is probably far too low )

I went for $250 because of the condition.
But then again that cachet could be scarce.

Hi, Does anyone know who the stamp dealer is, G.A Laker Esq. ? Does he still deal in stamps, has anyone dealt with him in the past? Above $10,000 for me

He used to be one of several dealers in the Brisbane CBD. The business passed to his son I believe, I remember visiting his shop in the early 1980's in a CBD arcade.Micky wrote:Hi, Does anyone know who the stamp dealer is, G.A Laker Esq. ? Most of the first day cachets had a full head of Gandhi ... the map of India one is scarce.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
I went for $2000A. I would have seen that going for £1200 I reckon (not that I would pay that!).
It's a Gandhi FDC - it might not have the high value, but, its still a very nice cachet, clear cancellation and whilst it may be grotty, the stamps are all in reasonable condition.
FDCs with the 10R value have gone on eBay recently for £2500+.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
We have 2 different questions here, the Title asks "What value does it have ?" and in the spiel Glen asks "what would YOU ask for it if you were to list it for sale here ?".
We know from experience of Glen it's not going to be a small value, but I answered the 2nd part and put down about A$10, in reality to the first question I'd say it's likely to be around the A$2,500 mark. Without Stampboards knowledge, if it were in a dealers A$1 box I'd pass it by.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
The four values on a nice clean cover appears to be a $1000+US item, the three lower values on a really ratty cover would seem to be perhaps a $100-$125US item.

I would sell it for about $5.00. If I got one in a junk pile it would go in my box of "things I don't collect" and probably forget that I ever had one.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
Horrible condition, but then normal principles don't strictly apply when dealing with covers. Scarce cachet, hard-to-find on cover, unusual destination, so many things can add value and buyers are left in a "take what you can get" situation.
Nonetheless, I voted $100 for this, as I'd be happy to get that amount if it was something I got in a mixed box and listed it eBay at 99cents.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
I'd never buy it, as I would be too scared the fungus would infect the rest of my collection, and frankly, even if somehow the item was desirable, that would be a very serious consideration for me.
I voted $250 simply because I vaguely recall something about this in the few $100's range, but I may be off. Still wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.
Also, truly shocked that Jim M. would sell it for $2000... Since he collects Belgian stamps, he must have meant BEF2000...and even then...

I really have no idea, but I've been around here long enough to know Glen wouldn't have put it up for a vote unless he knows something the rest of us do not

I voted $500 for what I would ask for it but personally I would be reluctant to pay more than $50 for it for the simple reason of being afraid that it might infest my other covers unless this is kept in a specially sealed acid-free plastic and probably sealed.

Its easy to guess Glen's polls -- take what you would pay, thus a rational number, double it, double it again and/or square it.MissVicki wrote:I have no opinion! No matter what I guess, I will be wrong!

Well Norm, you would get in trouble from the Mod's (maybe yourself )as the question was:fromdownunder wrote:I would sell it for about $5.00. If I got one in a junk pile it would go in my box of "things I don't collect" and probably forget that I ever had one.

You cant list anything on Stampboards for under $10.
That's the only reason I voted $10 myself and not $5

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
I don't think I like this discussion. I once threw a handful of early Indian first day covers into a junk box (which I then sold cheaply at auction for about $50) because I couldn't find a buyer for them at any price. There were some Gandhi covers in the stack (all the low values like that one).
I went for $1 because I would have been happy to get that for any of them.

Ditto. Although I suppose none of the answers in the poll apply to the question as posed: "what would you have listed it at on Stampboards?" I wouldn't have bothered because I wouldn't have expected to get even the minimum $10 ... Presumably the cover design is something out of the ordinary.memphre wrote:I voted $500. Sold for $US6,350 via a member here.

When it got to $US2000 the owner asked me if he should maybe keep it for an investment.
I told him I'd have gladly taken a tint fraction of that for it due to the crappy condition. It went on to sell for over treble the price from when he contacted me.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
There was also a scam on Delcampe for this cover.
You will note from the Ebay listing that the cover was listed on Ebay on April 5, and finished on April 15.
Evidently a French seller on Delcampe noted how well the cover was going and decided he would sell it himself on Delcampe!
So he copied the picture on Ebay and listed the same cover for sale on Delcampe on April 14 (one day before the Ebay listing closed) for 1,555.00 euros - by April 16 this seller had a buyer for the cover who bid 1,555.00 euros on April 16. Delcampe item number 169320254.
Then from what I can tell, someone must have alerted Delcampe to the scam, and it looks like Delcampe closed the auction, and terminated the seller's account.
The Delcampe buyer should consider himself very fortunate!

Now that is where eBay and Delcampe differ.
eBay tolerates scam artists, forgers and the like and on Delcampe thay are nuked in an instant.
Delcampe is slowly but surely becoming the place to go for stamps.

Re: POLL: Grotty FDC with part set - what value does it have
For those still wondering about the original dealer (G A Laker), his son John Laker is still operating as a stamp dealer in Toowoomba. He trades (by mail, and at monthly Toowoomba Stamp Club meetings) as Laker Philatelics, but no longer has a shopfront.

Just read that blogspot and boy they don't trust a thing do they, it would put you off collecting stamps, or at least Gandhi stamps which they seem to think are all fakes or fraudulent activity abound. A wee bitty jealousy methinks creeping in as well.admin wrote:

Well, to be fair the image (remaining) on eBay is lighter -- it looks less grotty than the version posted at the top of the thread:manfaefife wrote:You have to smile though at the description "a few tone spots" that's 2nd hand car dealer speak surely !
As for that description:
"1948 FIRST DAY COVER INDIA MAHATMA GANGHI ,A FEW TONE SPOTS ON COVER ,A VERY NICE COVER ,RARE ."
Evidently the buyers bid so much because they thought it was a rare "GANGHI" variety.
Then again, I'm not enthusiastic about the underbidder (i***i) being someone with private feedback ...manfaefife wrote:Just read that blogspot and boy they don't trust a thing do they, it would put you off collecting stamps, or at least Gandhi stamps which they seem to think are all fakes or fraudulent activity abound.
