Played twice 2P with my wife and lost both games. The second game was closer than I expected, and is the reason for me deciding with an 8 rating and not higher. She had a pair of occupation cards that automatically gave her clay and wood nearly every round and I just couldn't keep up. Once you're in that hole it's hard to recover.

Update: Came in 2nd in a 3P game a liked it a lot more. I'm only slightly better at the game, but it makes more sense each time I play.

Update #2: Beat my wife 43-42, gaining a good chunk of points in the last round. Things are continuing to click.

Once again I broke my own CotN rule by giving this a 10 after 1 play, but since I added it to all of my Jambo cards it really is an extension of that game. The new cards we encountered were really interesting, and I love the addition of the Holy Places. Definitely a Top 10 game for me with everything included.

The dice can make or break you, but there's enough strategy to give you a fighting chance. Playing with the doubling cube is an absolute requirement.

I really don't care for abstracts, but for some reason I like this game.

It's lost a little bit of its charm over a year but I still like it. The three for one trades have "killed" a few of the last games letting the trailing player win.

We played this recently and I house ruled that the more plentiful colors needed 4:1 and 5:1 trade ratios. This helped a bit.

If you're the Sheriff, your Deputy is usually an a$$hole.

Starting to lose it's luster, but after 40 games I'd say it was a worthwhile investment. I still like it, but not enough to vote for it as often as I used to.

I've only played two person games and the wall placement is THE make or break portion of the game. Also, the residential ares don't score nearly enough to justify the permanent placement of a meeple.

I haven't played this is a while, and suspect that my rating will change with a few more plays.

4 would be a bit too harsh for this game, so it's a weak 5. I honestly bought this for the tin to make cut out cookies and only paid $4.25 for it. Rio Grande should be embarrassed to ask $18 for 9 dice, a "mini golf" pencil and a tiny pad of blank paper.

Might be good for the kids to work on spatial relationships building the cities.

This is a great cutthroat game for adults as well.

I'm awful at Chess, and am not interested in making it a lifelong study. You really need to have players of similar skill level for this to work.

It's no better or worse than standard Codenames. The vast majority of the cards are inoffensive on their own. This is a far cry from Cards Against Humanity's level of crudeness.

I don't know much about the Marvel universe, so this wasn't a good fit. This will be a problem with any themed edition of the game if players aren't familiar with the content.

That said, the other players found my ignorance hilarious and we had a good time. I just won't go out of my way to play.

Update: Now that I've seen a lot more of the Marvel films and my 10yo wanted to get this I suspect my rating will go up after a few plays.

Believe the hype. A fantastic thematic experience without being fiddly or cumbersome. Have played this with 10 different people and everyone really liked it. 3 of us bought it after our first play. I enjoy it more each time we bring it out.

Update: This should be obvious, but if your group isn't invested in the story or his particular survivors the game can fall flat. This was very much the case with the last group I played with. Unfortunate, because they usually like hidden role / traitor elements in games.

Update 2: Played again with some of the original players. Everyone wanted to play a second game immediately afterward. Still surprised by the different reaction to the game between the two groups. I'm just glad I have a group as enamored with the game as I to enjoy it with.

A friend brought this over on New Year's Eve, and it went over well. It's fun, but not in a rambunctious way. Not something I would play a lot, but a nice change of pace from most of the party/social games I have.

The new score track, voting boards (with the loose pegs issue fixed), and a place to store cards from all three sets is well worth it.

I'll need to play this a few more times to make a better judgement. With the initial setup I found it very easy to do what I wanted. Also, there was no final roll-off as I was able to roll 12 of a kind and none of the other 3 players had that many dice.

The variable setup is a must for this game, because I can't see myself deviating from my plan otherwise.

I really didn't care for this the first time I played it. It wasn't at all what I expected, which was something much more strategic. I wanted to try it again mainly to get "revenge" on the game, and absolutely loved it. Having the right frame of mind was key.

Red cards are a$$holes.

The artwork combined with its simplicity make it very approachable to casual gamers. However, the game suffers from a rich get richer problem. If you don't get a decent engine going early you've pretty much eliminated yourself from winning the game. This can be a very big turn off.

Pretty fun. I thought it would frustrate the hell out of my kids, but they really enjoyed it.

I have a set that sadly has never been used. Mahjong players aren't all that common it seems. Four Winds Mahjong for the PC is excellent though and supports many rule variants. I've played Chinese Classical and recently tried out Zung Jung 3.2.

Despite numerous playings on the PC, I just can't get past the perception that this is simply a rummy variant with more restrictions and special winning hands. Most of the time after a few turns I know that the special hands are unattainable, and a few more dictate whether or not I play to win the hand or play defensively. With that in mind, I like the CC rule set better because I can at least play to get some points even if I can't win the hand.

I'm sure I'll look at this again in a few months, as is the pattern for me. I really want to like this more than I do, but can't tell you why.

Wasn't grabbed by this at all. Neither game I played suffered from the "one player takes over" problem, so that was good. However, I still felt like I was just going through the motions, and those were pretty limited based on my character's ability.

Update: Considerably better this time, and decent with two players. The expansion had a lot to do with that.

It's all about the narrative and how the permanence of your decisions affect the game going forward. Our group was sucked in right away and have already had some serious debates. A lot has changed just after 2 of the 12 months!

Birthday '16 to myself

I'm not a big fan of word based games, but this was very good. It could be the perfect gateway game for deck builders.

The timer is an a$$hole.

Fun just as a competition against someone else. I can easily populate the entire board without fail, so on it's own it rates lower.

The tomb raider is an a$$hole.

Fairly light, but there are some interesting decisions to be made. I really like the mechanism for receiving funding/excavation order. My 9yo struggled a bit with that at first, but he started to get the hang of it towards the end of the game - and took what I was hoping to get a couple of times!

Great with the poker crowd. "The other poker crowd" likes it as well.

Pigs + Dogs = a$$holes.

This was more fun than I expected it to be. I have yet to find a group that's willing to mix the two sets for ultimate insanity.

This is a great filler and should work very well with non gamers. Perhaps the shine will wear off over time, but for now this is a solid 8...um, 7.5...uh, yeah. How about 7?

I'm glad I didn't give up on this, and my wife really likes it as well. I enjoy this more each time I play it. Soon I'll have to try the expansions.

Love it - and perfect timing for a math trade acquisition. There's no better auction game out there, IMO.

Kickstarter. 50ea in leather bags. Good looking, shiny coins that are great to use with many of my games. People always admire them when I bring them out. I especially like them with 7 Wonders.

My one complaint is that they can be difficult to pick up.

I highly recommend playing while using a 7yo (or similar in age) as an all time "prop". Everyone had a blast and the prop was the star of the night.

For a while, it was the only game my wife wanted to play since I taught it to her and I'd catch her playing the PC version about every other day.

By rights I shouldn't have this rated so high with the runaway leader potential, and game breaking cards if they come out too early. For some reason I still love the game, so why fight it?

Really liked the solo version on the PC. Decent with two but much better with four. An early library can be a killer though.

As long as the sketchy parts of the rules are made clear prior to the start of a game I've had good luck with this. It's the people trying to play St. Louis for L (or something to that effect) that really irritate me.

I can take it or leave it, but it's easy to explain and my wife likes it.

Played over the 2010 Christmas break and decided that "vanilla" Settlers doesn't do it for me anymore. I'll insist on Seafarers or variants from The Book from now on.

The group has pretty much had it with this game, but it got its use. I still like it, and hope to get it played with fewer people. The boys will enjoy it though, so it's not dead yet.

Got it for oldest's 2nd birthday June 2004. This didn't hold any of their interests much at all.

This would have a lot more plays if it were up to me. I've played 100's of times on my iOS devices. Still love it. Far from burnt out (I hope).

A nice alternative to Pillars. The randomness of the dice works really well, and should make the game less predictable (which Pillars can become). I really like how the game scales with different numbers of players, and how your strategy must change as well.

I don't like the starvation rule though, and am going to exploit that my next game to see how bad it really is.
