*DONATE NOW* to the Stampboards AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES APPEAL

Post by GlenStephens »

(March 1, 2020 - in just a few weeks, our ever generous members have already donated $13,000 - see receipts posted below, and those funds are ALREADY in hands of The Salvation Army Bushfire Team, and are directly helping those in need NOW.

My ever ambitious aim was to donate at LEAST $10,000 to where it was needed, and we are WAY PAST there already, and more pledged monies are still to arrive!

All members interested in assisting, are asked to PayPal anything at all they can spare, to me at - admin [at] stampboards dot com - or for those with no PayPal account, direct to my bank account (by far the most preferred for oz donors) - 032199 - 824096 (where the first 6 digits are the 'BSB' number.)

Not everyone has PayPal, so I can also accept donations via ANY credit card, even Amex, and I bear all card merchant fees. Use https://tinyurl.com/GlenOrder and mark there as "Bushfire Donation"

Sadly, this crisis is not even remotely over - huge fires are still burning and Bushfire Season has 2 months to run so ongoing assitance will needed.

This shows the CURRENT Bushfires. In EVERY state. Remember Australia has the same land area as the Continental USA, but we have way less than 10% of USA population or resources, to battle these.
*DONATE NOW* to the Stampboards AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES APPEAL

Everyone reading this globally, is aware of the unprecedented catastrophe occurring in all States of Australia right now. Smoke and fires here are covering an area the size of Europe, the BBC TV just reported. The Australian Navy has evacuated towns of people, who were forced back to the waterline coastline by these massive and very fast moving fires.

1000s of totally destroyed homes and buildings nationally already, and a fast rising human death toll sadly. Over a BILLION animals have perished in NSW alone. News reports confirm many of these people were uninsured, so have lost it all. :(

This Continent is bone dry after years of drought (Global warming is a 'total myth' correct Federal Government?) and any fire now moves with ferocious speed and intensity. A cigarette butt carelessly tossed from a car window etc, can and has, soon burnt many houses to the ground.

We have been overseas in China, India, Thailand and Nepal for recent weeks, and are in Kathmandu right now writing this, and this tragedy has been the lead news items on BBC News and CNN etc, each day for those weeks.

Like everyone, I am sure, one feels quite helpless and dazed, and powerless to do anything to help, and everyone, even if not directly affected, wants to assist in some small way.

The generous members of stampboards have come to the fore several times in the past in such tragedies, and I am sure they will do so again.

Members generously donated about $20,000 to the Burma Cyclone Nargis appeal in 2008. We had a man on the ground, that we knew from our visits there, buy tents, plastic sheets, candles, cooking pots, canned food, fresh water, sacks of rice, and cooking oil etc, and take them by boat directly to many of those left homeless and without any food or shelter in the ensuing downpours. Our aid literally reached survivors days before ANY foreign NGO could get into the country, as the Burmese Military stymied all relief support for a week. Details below -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6174%20&start=100#p5032421

In the tragic Victoria bushfires a few years ago, where senior member here, the late Gary Brown (GJ50) tragically saw his son, and daughter-in-law, and all his 3 grandchildren sadly killed, members here also raised a large sum, and donated that to a Memorial Tribute there in Kinglake in Victoria, where their family home was burnt to the ground. :( :(

And other appeals and worthy causes too, we have generously supported in the past, so we have a long and a superb track record of acting fast and effectively in many areas of crisis and destruction.

This tragedy is unfolding - indeed getting even worse as I type this, and the Bushfire season here has only just started, so sadly more bad news is guaranteed in the weeks and months ahead. :(

Those affected need every ounce of help we can offer. AND RIGHT NOW.

After some checking, it appears to me the most useful body we can direct funds to is - The Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal who are a respected and highly trusted, very low overhead, (mostly volunteer) national body, who have organised a fleet of Food and Aid caravans like the one shown nearby, in the areas of current devastation NATIONALLY.

A hot meal, a cup of coffee, a bottle of water etc, and kind and compassionate words etc, will not bring anyone's home or livestock back sadly, but in a situation of shock and tragedy, it does show that someone cares, right there and then.

Ditto the brave firefighters, who mostly are unpaid volunteers, and who risk their lives to save others and their homes - for them also, these Salvation Army Support Vans might be able to assist them too, in some tiny way, and lift morale, if we help fund many more of them.

Salvos by Mid Januaury had served 225,000 meals to the front lines, via 165 Emergency centres.
HOW TO ASSIST.
As per our previous fund-raising appeals, if donations are made to one place, they can be consolidated into one direct donation to Salvation Army Bushfire Emergency Fund on a regular basis, so the support on the ground can get started FAST.

Not everyone has PayPal, so I can also accept donations via ANY credit card, even Amex, and I will bear all card merchant fees. Use https://tinyurl.com/GlenOrder and mark there as "Bushfire Donation"

Send PayPal from overseas in whatever currency you wish, to save you the nasty currency conversion fees, that I will gladly pay, and it will be passed on in a lump sum each few daysm and reported here, and donation receipt shown. (See posts of my donation receipts below.)

Everything helps, and a few 100 members donating just the cost of a beer or a glass or wine or a pizza etc, will create an impressive tally, and directly help a LOT of those affected. 8)

For the 100s of members overseas are looking on helplessly, and wondering how to assist - you actually CAN.

Also in the past, we encouraged folks to offer stamp items for sale via a HIGHEST BID in a WEEK, in the For Sale Forum, noting the proceeds would go entirely to this Bushire Appeal, and members here bid generously. Head such offers as "Bushfire Appeal Auction of .........."

We normally do not allow Auctions, but for these appeals make an exception. See them, support them, some superb generosity shown here - or start one here yourself -
https://www.stampboards.com/viewforum.php?f=27
Me, I'll donate 10% of all sales of my material made here this month on stampboards - so buy something that you want and need, at the normal discounted price, and YOU still donate by doing that. 1,000s of my stamp items for sale are here - https://www.stampboards.com/viewforum.php?f=27

Donate direct if you wish, but please do SOMETHING. Add a note here that you have donated to our appeal by all means - no need to specify WHAT you donated, if you do not wish to - but just showing solidarity and support will be great to see. Some members often prefer to remain anonymous, as we saw in the past, and cetsainly has occured often here, and choose not to post here - that of course is entirely your choice, and is respected.

Stampboards charges ZERO to join, ZERO to use, and ZERO to buy or sell or swap or exchange anything. So please make a modest donation, and regard it as your ''Annual Dues''!

State and Federal Government are slow and lumbering and cumbersome at any time, and this disaster was FAR worse, being in the usual annual Parliament recess of course. So this disaster could not have occurred at a worse time, and near all civil servants of all types, State and Federal, are on the usual lonnnnng, paid, Xmas/New Year holidays until mid-Janaury or so.

It seems to me all Governments were clearly confused and foundering until first weeks of January, with little plan for weeks, or more important almost no staff on duty to implement them, even if they had one, as nothing remotely on this scale has ever occurred here, and so widely.

The ''leadership'' shown by our Prime Minister was to fly with his family to Hawaii on holiday, First Class, at taxpayer expense, while the country burned. He was also pretty inept in the week or two since since he returned, it seemed to me. Clueless.

Flashy paid TV ads at vast sense outlining his thought bubbles, none of which was actually OCCURING. Our PAID Military should have been in full support roles from mid December nationally and were not ever considered it seems.

BBC and CNN have both showed for days, footage of Morrison being booed and jeered and ran out of town in his limo, by one group of furious residents who lost their homes. His government has been warned for YEARS in detailed reports, this was a clear disaster in the making, and near nothing has been done, as his Goverment strenously denies global warming even exists.

Those losing their homes want some real support and assistance right NOW, and not in 3 months, after they fill out 200 pages of Bureaucratic forms.

Both our Houses Of Federal Parliament, who surely work the least sitting days of anyone on the planet, do not re-convene until February 4. I kid you not. And near all vanished on lavish vacations on their Free Gold Passes for them and families, from Dec 3 -

https://www.pmc.gov.au/sites/default/files/publications/parl ... inal-2.pdf

Stampboards is a true GLOBAL COMMUNITY, and we show time and time again that we DO care, and that makes me very, very, proud. 8)

Thanks in advance - EVERY member CAN assist here - small or large donations - it all helps enormously. People Power.

By all means pass this link onto your family or friends or contacts, or Facebook or Twitter or blog contacts etc - the FINEST of causes to support -

These Salvation Army Vans are already out there, assisting the brave and tired and thirsty firefighters.
This info below is from the Salvation Army Appeal site: -

"Salvation Army Emergency Services (SAES) teams are responding to devastating bushfires around Australia as an unprecedented number of emergency-level fires cause tragic loss of life and property.

The situation remains extremely fluid.

Salvation Army teams have been activated at multiple locations, with a number of teams on standby ready to activate should they be required at other evacuation centres.

“Our teams are providing meals to evacuees and frontline responders, and will continue to provide whatever support is needed as the situation develops,” said Major Topher Holland, General Manager Strategic Emergency and Disaster Management.

Your generous donation means that we can deliver crucial support right when it's needed, and that we can stay as long as it takes to help local communities make a full recovery.

Please donate now and show your support for our communities in crisis."

In mid January the Salvos reported -

We have provided services and support at more than 165 evacuation centres across the country. More than 225,000 meals have been prepared and served and over 115,000 light refreshments provided to first responders and evacuees.

YOUR Donation is assisting this essential work at the fire face.

Have just had contact from friends close to the firegrounds, who have been busy making sandwiches, and looking after our fantastic and brave volunteer firefighters.

I'm not in a position to physically help currently, but happy to kick things off here and have made a PayPal donation.

The very first PayPal donation received was from a member who prefers to remain anonymous on this thread, as many do for such things, but he is a local cricket fan, and his PayPal message note read -

"$99.94 - For the Stamp Boards Bushfire Appeal. Sir Don Bradman's average score."

Wonderful support, and very many thanks from those who need help right now.

OK, within a short couple of hours, our generous members globally have donated $500 already - and all this whilst Australia members are asleep (past 2am there)

Many thanks to one and all.

Those monies have been passed on immediately, so as the Salvos can start using the funds right away, for their wonderful work.

I am a uniformed soldier in the Salvation Army, and a member of the Salvation Army Emergency Services team.

I have already spent several days this fire season feeding fire fighters and other emergency service members at fires in my local region.

Every dollar given makes it just that little bit easier for us to supply these services to both evacuation centres, and also on the front line at the fire staging grounds, to the men and women battling these terrible fires and to victims.

On behalf of all us SAES team volunteers, I say thank you to everyone who gives to this appeal, and assists us in doing what we can to make this horrific situations just a little bit better for those involved.

God Bless!

There appears to be glitch in our member email back-end software. ONE email was sent, but a few members have advised me several copies of it were received. No idea WHY.

Our sincere apologies for that, it was not intended at all. A truly minor inconvenience for recipients, and of course not comparable to someone who has lost their home or family members etc.

None of us can imagine how devastated we would feel if EVERYTHING one owned was reduced fine powdery dust in hours.

John Gartner told his friends just that - below, what that was like.

John Gartner, RDP, owned Hawthorn Press, his publishing and printing business, and published among other things, the venerable Australian Commonwealth Specialists’ Catalogue.

John owned many Gold Medal stamp collections, and top end Gold and Silver coin and banknote collections - worth millions, and a huge home with farm animals. All dust. He and wife Zelma leapt with just the bed clothes on their back into a swimming pool, and 2 woollen blankets over their heads to stop the fierce radiant heat and embers, for 3 or 4 hours, to survive. The heat was 2100 degrees just 8 feet or 2 metres from where they hid as you can see.

They were very wealthy, and as you can see John states the Bureaucrats were totally useless, they lived in caravan for a while, and as you can see, he urged anyone NEVER to donate to others except for Salvation Army etc in such disasters, as they DID assist, and assisted FAST.

Many PayPal donations from members who ask to stay anonymous are zinging in.

Have made another $500 donation just now - generous stampboard members have probably already funded a day or so of water and emergency food etc, to those who desperately need it NOW for one of these Emergency Vans, and can't wait for Bureaucrats to have meetings and Think Tank sessions on it in the next weeks and months.

Thanks, George and all the many donors.

Everything adds up - if we all skip one Pizza or stamp new issue, cheeky ebay purchase, or beer etc, it will really help folks who need a hand right NOW, not in 3 months when Governments after 50 meetings decide to do something.

And folks DO look at the amazingly generous stuff members have donated for this appeal already -

http://www.stampboards.com/viewforum.php?f=27

Superb 4 margin 1d Black, VFU 5/- Harbour Bridge, stunning Margin Mint Tasmania 10/- BLOCK 4 of QV, KGV 1d Harrison imprint block etc. Stamps ALL members want, and by buying them ALL the funds go to the appeal.

Canada went through the ravages of wild fires in the last couple years and Australia was one of the first countries to step up and send help...........now it's Canada's turn.

Close to 100 firefighters have been sent from Canada in the middle of their Christmas holidays to assist in any way possible.

Small donation sent, Glen.

Thank you for co-ordinating this for all Stampboards community members.

As mentioned, Australian Fire Fighters came to Canada's aid when needed, now we can do the same.

Morning in Nepal - Thanks to the ongoing donations of our generous members, I just paid the THIRD donation into Salvation Army just now of $A500, making our donated tally already $1,500.

EVERYONE can forego a beer or pizza etc this weekend I am sure, to spare $10 or $20 and keep this important fund-raiser rolling along. :)

Add a note here you have donated by all means, or keep it anonymous, as many have done.

The Government and Civil Service appears in Summer Hibernation while the country burns, so these folks need some help FAST.

Victorian government has declared a State of Disaster for most of East Gippsland, which will hopefully help the boots on the ground.

Even anonymous donations, via this site, toward the Salvos Emergency Services will greatly boost assistance - but more importantly, boost morale for those men and women who put themselves in harm's way to help others right around this Country.

Donation sent... it will appear as an odd amount as I converted $25 USD to AUD.

I know the conversion was not necessary.

Prayers sent as well. Thank you for this opportunity!

Thanks again to all the ongoing support folks. :)

All members can I am certain can forego a Pizza or two, to keep the donations rolling.

Juggling all this somehow, whilst on a fast moving vacation, and using the super slowwwwwwwwww Nepal Internet, but just made yet another $750 donation this time, so please keep the PayPal donations coming in -
Image
All members interested in assisting, are asked to PayPal anything at all they can spare, to me at - admin [at] stampboards dot com - or for those with no PayPal account, direct to my bank account (by far the most preferred for oz donors) - 032199 - 824096 (where the first 6 digits are the 'BSB' number.)

Not everyone has PayPal, so I can also accept donations via ANY credit card, even Amex, and I bear all card merchant fees. Use https://tinyurl.com/GlenOrder and mark there as "Bushfire Donation"

Great suggestion - did that just now. :)

https://www.stampboards.com/viewforum.php?f=27

Very generous bids and stamp donations, and bids already over $2000 just on those - all members are urged to donate anything spare you have around the place, to add to the tally, or add a bid to those donated lots.

Also, all lots of mine sold here in January, will see 10% of that donated to the fund.

Glen, great move to push off this appeal.

Even TV stations in Germany, who rarely report about Australia give much more coverage than usual, as they noticed the tremendous size of the problem you're dealing with.

A donation is in your Paypal.

Cross my fingers that the brave fire fighters finally will tame the flames.

MANY thanks for the ongoing donations folks.

Just made another $500 donation based on recent donations - taking us to $2,750 donated already and some $1000s pledged on top of that for stamps being auctioned here by generous members, so we are at about $5000 so far. People Power.

This letter now comes along with each donation - really shows how appreciated donor efforts are from here.

And a reminder, I have been donating 10% of all sales of my material made here this month on stampboards - so buy something that you want and need, at the normal discounted price, and YOU still donate by doing that. 1,000s of my philatelic items for sale are here - ALL qualify -

Hello Glen,

Glen,

Impressive work you are doing and I hope that the help will be great. My wife and I had a wonderful vacation on the east coast in 2013 and 2015 and we have tears in our eyes when we see all these catastrophic pictures. Before that we had breathtaking impressions on our trip when we had a good time.

We got help from many people who have become our friends. Special thanks to Hutch!

Hopefully my donation is one of many for the millions of tasks that have to be done after the fire ...

Hopefully to reach you soon!!!

Walter

Down here in Gippsland there is some rapid response by the locals and farmers far and wide. It probably takes place weeks before any government bureaucracy could organise something at substantial cost and all this gets done for nothing.

My son in law has turned his farm at Rosedale into a hay depot for donated hay organised by the Heyfield Lions Club and in particular Ray Ackers. The hay comes in and is shipped out ASAP to farmers who have been burnt out. They are not the only ones, I saw a shipment of 400 odd round bales going up to Omeo the other day.

Ray and the Lions have been supporting East Gippsland farmers for over 2 years during the drought. East Gippsland has been like a desert for a couple of years, the only problem is that it is full of trees. If you can get into Phoebe's facebook page from the clip, scroll through and see some of the work that has been done by unpaid volunteering locals.

The son in laws property at Rosedale looks all right at the moment but they only got their first cut of hay for a couple years themselves and until recently had dry dams. They were no where near as bad as anyone East of Sale.

Facebook video of a lot of hay leaving the property today: https://www.facebook.com/PhoAngNad/videos/2842882452429172/?__tn__=%2Cd-]-h-R&eid=ARACjmCZ_IrSnjQpVPoMD9eAlI-xaRVFV_IpO1QrUCx3LtCYLIiq1-p-R7RnVmK7k-J2N5deCLV7zNAp

Thank again for the continuing stream of donations.

With Woodblocks generous donation, added to what I had, I will already have easily another transfer to make to Salvation Army, when next I can access banking.

Sitting here in Chengdu in China (WHERE? - it has half the population of Australia!) and of course all gmail, google, youtube, Facebook, PayPal and most western banking sites are banned here by The Great Firewall. So I literally cannot do a thing.

We are here for 3 more hours, then a 12 hour flight to Sydney, so will be out of email contact for that time. Keep the donations rolling in, and I might have $1000 to do as next tranche. :)
