EVM in Highway and Seawall Construction

The application of EVM in highway construction was a topic at the AACEI Annual Meeting. For many of our readers EVM is often applied to IT, aerospace, energy, and defense projects. But EVM is a big part of design and build industry. How EVM is applied to the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program is discussed in a Federal Highway Administration report

Building the Foundations for EVM
In 2000 Dr. Euhong Kim looked at EVM success factors related to an organization's ability to deploy effective EVM.  Dr. Kim listed 40 characteristics within four categories: EVM users, EVM methodology, implementation process, and project environment. His study is available for purchase from Science Direct. It's hard to focus on forty, but maybe its possible to focus on the most important ten. Next month's Newsletter will highlight these top 10.

Gov't Projects Sought for Research
A study that focuses on US Government funded projects needs candidate software development projects that were completed within the last four years. The study will compare the levels of customer satisfaction between EVM and non-EVM projects. The researcher is currently compiling the list of projects that used EVM. Please email Dave Plumer if you have a candidate project.

Mapping the Schedule to WIP (EVTs)

For short period work packages many projects and organizations use a 0/100% or 50/50% rule. Simple, yet potentially misleading since the EV is based upon the only starting the work package and ending the work package. For example, 25% of the work might be done in the first period, but will be reported as 0%, or 50%, if we use one of the WIPs (EVTs) above. A look at our schedule will show when the work package is to start and end. By looking at this information we'll get an idea of the amount of work that might be done each period. For example, if a work package starts in the third week of the month and ends at the end of the following month it's clearly not going to be a 50/50, more like 1/3 in month one and 2/3 in month two. So use a WIP of 30/70! That way if your work starts on time the reported EV is in line with the accomplishment

New Award for Innovation in Application of EVM

The PMI College of Performance Management is initiating a new awarddownward chart to recognize innovation in EVM. This winner of this award will be announced at the PMI CPM's Spring Conference  (June 2010). The nomination process is being finalized, but you can start thinking about a project you think is deserving of this award. It will be given to an innovative, not necessarily ANSI 748, application of EVM.

EVP - Defined
EVP pin
What is the role of an EVP? How is a EVP different from the rest of the EVM workforce?

I looked at the AACEi website (the EVP certifying body) and could not find a definition of in the EVP. Based upon the topics I encountered in the EVP Exam, the study guide, recommended study material, and discussion with other EVPs I crafted the following EVP role description. (This has not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by AACEi.)

"An EVP is capable of leading an organization's EVM workforce. He or she can design an ANSI 748 compliant EVMS, provide EVMS process engineering, advise corporate leadership on EVMS, and interpret EVM performance data. The EVP can fully participate in proposal, pricing, planning, scheduling, risk management, and other project activities, and understands the domains of experts in these areas. The EVP is the EVM expert and advises the other domain experts regarding the ramifications of their decisions upon the EVM baseline and the utility of resulting performance data. The EVP understands the political environment surrounding the project and how to best communicate EVM performance data in each instance and each audience.  Finally, the EVP can provide well written, logical, and persuasive communication to the project team, corporate leadership, and the customer."

Does that sound like you? If so, apply for the EVP exam, pass it, and get certified. Be one of the few, under 300 EVPs exist today.
