The Football Record, the AFL's weekly game magazine has a page in it written by Rick Milne on collectables.

Glen will love this as each week there is a "Rick's Rarity":

The Encyclopedia of AFL footballers records him as being born on 8th March 1969 & playing 1 game in 1900 & kicking no goals. He was originally from Ballarat & retired in 1896 before the VFL was formed, but helped out for one game in 1900 when was an official.

One wonders what the critreia was to be included in the set of Bonanza Cigar cards.

Bidding started at $19.99 & finished up at a whopping $10,110:

Our ebay seller "gold'n'pawn" was generous enough to offer free postage.

If someone who has the "snipping tool" would be so kind enough to add a picture of the ebay auction to this thread it will save this for posterity.

And keep an eye out for more Bonanza Cigar Cards.

In hindsight I should have made this into an official guessing game.

Long way to go to reach the price levels of Honus Wagner.

But then, the prices reflect the market for American baseball v. Aussie footy, and the relative number of cash-rich (and sometimes brain-poor) people out there chasing stuff.

Glen

He played more than one game for Essendon but his hey day was before the VFL was formed. His games were in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from which 8 clubs defected to form the VFL in 1897. It is not clear whether this is a VFL or VFA card but I suspect it is the latter, as why would he be on a card if he was just an official making up the numbers when players were injured rather than a regular player.

CREBBIN, Bill C.

Years Played: 1900
Born: 8/03/1869
Died: 9/12/1924
Height: cm
Weight: kg
Debut order: 61

Number(s):

Games: 1
Goals: 0

Previous Clubs: Ballarat

Seasons Played

Year 1900 Games 1 Goals 0

Bill Crebbin was a top centreman in the Essendon Association premiership sides between 1891 and 1894. He did not play many games in 1895 due to his new role as central umpire, and he retired from playing at the end of that season. However he made a brief comeback in 1896 when the side was struggling with injuries and a loss of form. He retired again at the end of the year.

He had been selected in the intercolonial sides in 1891 and 1893.

Crebbin originally came from Ballarat and he had a reputation for being extremely ticklish.

He became the Club's first secretary when Essendon joined the League in 1897 and he returned to the field yet again to play one more game in mid-1900 when, due to injuries, the team found itself one man short. By then he was 31 years old and had not played for four years.

When he stepped down as secretary after eight years in 1904, he remained on the committee for another year in 1905.

He had been elected a life member of the Victorian Football League on his retirement.

Crebbin died on 9th December, 1924.

A bidding 'jump' from $2,000 to $10,000 in one hit? Extraordinary.

I wonder if the transaction has been completed, i.e. has the seller received payment yet. No feedback as of now.

I'd imagine that somebodies last minute snipe bid took out the under bidders highest bid with that one bid.

If someone runs down the incremental bids, there's probably a long line of "to you - to me" bids in equals increments.

Edit - just had a look and err... no.

The first 10k bid was actually made and hidden for 6 days before the final snipe.

Some one else really wanted it and lost! I know the feeling.

That's always the big "but" when quoting Ebay realisations.
