The... the militia quickly arrives.

They kill the first ogress without much difficulty.

But then, fighting is heard from deeper in the fortress.

Two ogres have slipped past the fighting above and trapped a handful of dwarves in tunnels dug out by some previous oversee for reasons I can't imagine. Further down is the half-complete auditorium, where more dwarves are trapped. The only soldier there is Helical Nightmares, and against all odds, he seems to be winning. He is unharmed, and his opponents, well...

Seeing this, GrimRevenant and Vim Fuego also begin to hit the ogres with whatever they have.

Back in the upper layers, the militia has been ordered to stay in the tunnels and fight off the ogres in close quarters, safe from the goblin crossbowmen. A few disobey and go topside, but Magrov, Finagle, Pierzak, Aston, Krushdhead and Three Phase battle 3 ogres in the tunnels below the breach.

La Croix and Dirty Frank have both ran outside and killed a goblin maceman, though they have suffered some harm.

Unfortunately many more invaders remain.

The ogres in the tunnel are beaten, but there is no way to close the breach without dooming the dwarves who ran outside and haven't come back... By my count, right now that would be La Croix.

He's been howling in pain in the dirt close to the tower, unmoving even when called back inside.

There's a goblin hammerman going for him, too.

And above on the ridge is a squad of hammermen, headed by an axelord.

They must go around to reach the hatch, but when they do so...

I order the stairs below the hatch dug out. Teddles does the deed.

And just as the stairs collapse, La Croix begins to head for the hatch.

And when he reaches it, he... understands. And so he heads back. Towards the incoming ogres.

He fights well, despite his injuries.

Until the axe lord arrives.

He does not scream. He does not have time for it.

But that blood is not on my hands.

I've made up my mind. Bronzestabbed was created to fight evil. It was supposed to be a weapon to strike at the root of evil. But the root isn't the goblins, or the Fields of Vice, or a fallen king. The true root is far older, and far more insidious. And it needs a very special weapon to be defeated.

I will forge Bronzestabbed into that weapon, whatever it takes.

Melee squads are ordered to stand down. Ranged ones are to stay on top of the tower and harass the goblins. Preferably by killing them, like Lunnrais did for one.

Either way, there's little to do except waiting I think. I'll order them to stand down and resupply soon.

Speaking of which, two of the magma forges are reserved for armor and weapon smelting from now on.

The next time our marksdwarves need bolts, they'll have them, whether it's to shoot at goblins, elves or traitors.

6th Hematite 241

The goblins ran out of animals to slaughter and have started firing at the tower.

Most marksdwarves are tired, hungry and thirsty, on top of being nearly all out of ammo, so I order them back in. Even with the tower's fortifications, the goblins might get some bolts through and I don't need more pointless deaths.

The wounded are starting to be brought to Start Guarded Memorial. Three Phase is suffering a broken floating rib. I dress his wounds myself.

Bularin, a miner, is evaluated by Markus.

I'm not sure what happened to him as I did not see him involved in any battles.

8th Hematite 241

The queen has issued a ban on exports.

What, is she afraid we'll trade ballista arrows to the goblins or something? Because our export markets are a tad limited by the goblin siege right now.

11th Hematite 241

The fortress is getting even less done than usual. A number of dwarves complain that they can't do their job without going outside. The bastards just want to loot the corpses. Like that of...

Yeah, thanks, I know. And I think John Freeman won't be seen again until the siege is lifted, so...

Lastly Aston, one of the recent migrants, is also brought to Start Guarded Memorial with a broken hip.

I saw him fight against one of the ogres in the tunnel below the breach. Hopefully his military career won't end with that.

I've not noticed before, but it's summer now. The cool breeze must feel nice topside.

13th Hematite 241

Three Phase is already out of Star Guarded.

This is a day after finishing his treatment.

I hope he won't push himself too hard, although it is good to see him so eager to return to active duty. We could use more dwarves like him.

In other good news, Promontory has come of age today.

And Tendales had a child.

15th Hematite 241

Really? I mean I know sometimes it has to be done but i find it kinda boring. A big problem with DF sieges is with underground farms there is no pressing reason to break the siege, you're not gonna starve and with the caverns you can even get wood. So there's no real tension added by being under siege.

Possibly the masons are refusing to build because the stones they want to build with are not within the same burrow.

Well, migrants won't come, and supply caravans will get ruined, and longer things go the more likely it is that a big group of siegers gets caught in a Murk. So, there's that.

I'm on the complete opposite side of the fence. Sieges bore the poo poo out of me. There's always sieges, which are almost always dealt with by military dwarves. Admittedly Yeol is very good at narrating them; his is the first siege I've not just skimmed over in a very long time. Almost as boring is the inevitable chorus of "DON'T WALL UP, DRAFT EVERYONE, SEND THEM TO THEIR DEATHS, BLOO BLAH BLOO" but then I'm biased perhaps because I've been on the receiving end of that as an overseer.

But I mean, at least, what happened to the traps? Not the spammy little cage and stone fall traps, but the elaborate "Here is a giant mug which used to be a monument and now spouts magma" traps. They're fun, let's have more of them.

May 4, 2008

Bringing your thread to a screeching halt, guaranteed.

That was a close call. Where I come from it isn't tradition for masons to build backdoors into fortifications allowing them to be circumvented by ravening ogres, but every fortress has it's own tradition. The important thing is that no dwarf deaths can be blamed on our armor. Or at least MY armor. I'm so sorry that inbuilt flaws in the fortress design means you're going to be a single dwarf mom now Tendales. We're all here for you now.

What is important is that redoubled production at the magma forges means more opportunity for my own inimitable creations to make there way into service. Armor will flow from the magma to our soldiers!

16th Hematite 241

I found the problem. It turns out that ordering the civilians to hide, as per the procedures defined by a previous overseer, forbids them from going to the forges and other parts of the fortress.

I've thus canceled the order the hide, trusting that dwarves won't find a way to go outside and get killed. I'm not dumb enough to trust them to do this on their own, but if the goblins haven't managed to find a way in yet, I take it dwarves shouldn't be able to find a way out.

I'm relieved to see that the citizens of Bronzestabbed aren't actually a bunch of craven grave robbing morons, not openly anyhow, but then they did take advantage of all this for a half-month long break, so they're not exactly saints.

17th Hematite 241

Oh for gently caress's-

A bunch of dwarves went to the topside garden and now they're afraid of coming back down because ogres are glaring at them when they get close to the stairs.

Guess I'll just order some new stairs dug out. Not like more holes in the fortress' defenses will make things worse than they are now.

As punishment and in case goblin crossbowmen take position on the ridge overlooking the gardens, I remove the meeting areas and the pastures there. Get Medtob and the rest of the animals to the inside pastures.

25th Hematite 241

Little has been occurring the past few days. Some of the ogres' corpses have started to rot as they could not be brough to the bone pile.

The stench is overpowering.

27th Hematite 241

I just realized that one of the previous overseer asked that only farmers be allowed to harvest our crops.

We're about to lose 2/3 of everything in our fields because of that.

1st Malachite 241

The goblins are still here, yet not much is occurring either in the fortress or outside of it.

We did complete the Royal Mausoleum for the Queen.

A bronze door and a bronze sarcophagus are the only objects part of the tomb. But every single inch of it is engraved masterfully. I've been told by Leperfish that her majesty, who I still have not met, is pleased with it.

The tomb is part of a larger project, to provide the citizens of Bronzestabbed with a place where they can be undisturbed when they go to sleep for the last time. For now, there are crypts, and a memorial for those whose remains cannot be retrieved.

Already there are slabs for John Freeman and La Croix, but also for El Belmondo, neongrey, Sir Penguin and Bikindok. I assume the slabs were made at some point in the past but became unnecessary when remains were retrieved. Still, it does not feel right to leave them in the stockpiles gathering dust.

6th Malachite 241

Again, very little is happening. About the only thing of note is Rothon, a swordsdwarf, running around the fortress telling everyone about how her bronze sword is the best of swords.

It's starting to get on my nerves.

7th Malachite 241

Work on the "Screw" is progressing slowly, but I should count myself lucky that it is progressing at all. We've encountered a number of engineering problems, but everything should be solvable. Work on [the text had been made illegible] is progressing even more slowly, and thankfully both projects are making use of different labor pools for the time being. Unfortunately, the latter project mostly needs masons, and I'm starting to become convinced that there is a masonic conspiracy in this fortress.

8th Malachite 241

I've ordered that the food stockpile in the old Ugathville area be removed, and all food and drinks there moved to the main stockpile.

There's little reason to leave those there for the few dwarves who still haven't returned to the fortress proper, and having to walk further to eat might provide some encouragement to do so.

I honestly can't believe that months after I freed them, some still insist on remaining in the mud. They say they pray for the siege to end, like dogs begging an unkindly master for scraps.

9th Malachite 241

Murk. Thankfully there is no dwarves nearby. If only it'd hit the goblins, maybe they'd choke to death on it. I don't know if it's actually poison, I've asked some of the dwarves who've been here for longer than me a few times and they're unwilling to talk about it.

12th Malachite 241

I've ordered the ranged squads back on the tower.

Unfortunately, the goblins seem to have learned to stay clear of it and are just out of range.

I guess there really isn't anything to do but the wait out the siege after all.

15th Malachite 241

Curse the gods.

Our medical dwarves did everything they could for him. He seemed in good condition, even, hauling things around and earning an honest living. If only he hadn't fallen down the "Screw"'s shaft...

But accidents happen, and we can't let fear of death paralyze us. We must act and do what we must.

The Overseer has been kind enough to grant my request into a military squad. I report this afternoon to begin my training once more. I have thought long on this situation and have concluded that it will be in the best interest of the fort for me to assist in this way.

I have risen to High Muck, but now I will allow another to claim that title should they want it. I have helped dig into the rock that made our home for a year. This test of the Gods though is growing ever closer to home. For the past year and a half I have studied all of the texts that have been brought and prayed long in solitude to Ugath for answers.

I hope that they will allow me to train with a spear. I feel an affinity towards that weapon that I can not understand.

Some claim that we are hear to strike back at an evil. Yet, they send cooks and weavers, farmers and dyers. Women with children. Very few trained fighters have come. If we have been sent to fight an evil, where is an army? Where are the weapons and armor? Instead we must trade for these things. It makes you wonder exactly who "Sankis" really worked for. Why would The Queen come to this death trap. A troubling thought and one I have not shared with others. We will not advance beyond the river. We will not attack a goblin tower. Regardless, I will train more and soon I will see Ugath below.

First, I will gather all that are willing and hold on last prayer for those horrible creatures to depart from our home.

Speaking of provocative squad names... questions about military moms:

1) I know in melee a mother carrying her infant may find the infant attacked instead (witness Male Man, who really should gain Shield User experience for being used as a shield as a child). Do infants intercept ranged attacks for the mother if she is a Marksdwarf and gets shot at?

2) Is a mother more likely to enter a Martial Trance or go Berserk if her infant is injured or killed in battle?

Just wondering if an all-female Marksdwarf squad would get around some of the risks and dangers inherent in being military mothers while also allowing for hilarious baby kevlar that also operates as a temporary combat buff.

Infants don't actually intercept attacks, the attacker just chooses the infant as the target instead of the mother. So an attacker will either focus on the mother or the infant, but won't switch between the two. Martial trance doesn't become more likely, but the mother might go berserk if her infant is killed. Of course the rest of the fortress might too.

Alright Kaishai, carve those holes.

Good. Marksdwarves? Do your thing.

...that means shoot the goblins.

Any time you're ready...

THERE we go.

Ok, only Pladdicus is shooting, but baby steps and all that.

No, seriously, why aren't the rest of you shooting? Daeren, if the stories I've heard about you are half-true, you should have already single-handedly killed every last goblin from here to Paintsfamous from the top of the tower, let alone from this range. So why aren't you-

Oooooh. Empty quiver. Well that makes sense, it's not like one of our forges has been pounding bolt after bolt after loving bolt for months at this point.

I hate you people so godsdamn much.

Oh, hey, Corbeau remembered that he does have some bolts in his quiver and now he's firing too.

They're fast little bastards, aren't they? If only they'd also leave this fast- What the gently caress is that noise?

TREASON! Kill it before it opens the main gate! Rats in the goblins are virtually the same species! It'll let its cousins in!

"They just left."

What?

They did! They really did! Looks like a half-dozen bolts up their asses was all they were waiting for after all. I'm still gonna wait a little while longer before lowering the bridge though.

Unfortunately The One-Way Outs managed to lose the giant rat during the second or so I was looking away. No idea where it went.

13th Galena 241

I think we're safe. Time to pull the bridge lever. And with that, we can start collecting the items the elves... forgot in our trade depot. Which got tore down by ogres, now that I think about it.

I'd also ask any dwarf missing a pet to please locate and dispose of their corpse before they start stinking up the place.

Thank you for your assistance.

Oh yeah. That too.

16th Galena 241

Cleanup is still ongoing, with the hope of getting defenses up before the next goblin siege. For now, we have other visitors.

Unfortunately the new trade depot isn't ready yet. I'm sure the caravan will be willing to wait a week or two until we build a new one, if we can make sure they don't spot the dead elven merchants.

20th Galena 241

Curse the gods!

Slick Slinky's enrollment in the military should have helped bring about the end of this pointless infighting, but now it threatens to reopen wounds that have only begun to heal. Already there are whispers that this is an act of Ugath itself. And I can't help but agree.

Well, enjoy your playthings while you can, deities.

21st Galena 241

And now he's claimed a mason's workshop. Were I a more superstitious dwarf, I would think that's a sign meant for me. Well, more of a warning.

22nd Galena 241

It ends... poorly.

24th Galena 241

That's three uncovered near the bone pile just today.

1st Limestone 241

The whispers are everywhere. A throne for the Queen. A gift from Ugath.

Fools.

I can see this for what it is: an attempt by the gods themselves to hinder me by sowing dissent. I should feel flattered! Or perhaps it's a warning. But I won't heed.

Already the Tower is rising. Some dwarves are questioning if it really needs to be this high for us to defend ourselves. I tell them that for the enemy I have in mind, it must be still higher. But I wonder...

What will they do when they learn I intend to slay their masters?

Probably the conspirators guessed I'd tell Leperfish and possibly Rawkking (if she didn't know already) and perhaps JimmytheD and Three Phase about whatever was going on, but I still would have smelted some fine ingots.

When I'm not busy writing sonnets (I need a word that rhymes with 'pewter') I find some time to be thankful the Ugathite segregation is over. It was almost as stupid and cruel and senseless as keeping furnaces a secret from me.

Another month another siege, but I'm worried about Medtob. All I've heard from outside is dying puppies. Medtob is my only friend here and my family, and if something happens to him--he'd just better turn up afterward covered in goblin guts and ogre vomit and maybe some unlucky dwarf's teeth. Actually he probably will.

The magma furnaces taunt me with ineffable fires, but I'm still carving stone instead of burning things because a siege means we can't go near magma for some reason. I guess the ungodly screams if someone fell in probably would distract the marksdwarves.

Medtob is all right! And we're allowed to work by the magma! Despite the goblins outside (still, always) and even La Croix's horrible but horribly heroic death--despite the ogres inside that more horrible heroics managed to kill before we all horribly died--my heart sings with poetry.

Oh furnace, ever birthing fiery joys,
Smelting pure iron, turning tin to pewter
When mixed with copper, for so go alloys;
Your flames, your heart, your door--what could be cuter?

Maybe I should ask Loden Taylor for help.

7th Galena 241

For all this time I've been impatient with the duty of carving rock, which has nothing to do with what I was born to do or the position I've been given. It doesn't even have anything to do with soap! But that was before I got to carve MURDER HOLES. As soon as I finish writing this I'm throwing a MURDER HOLE PARTY.

Haha, great update, YeOlde. I love how disgruntled dwarf-you sounds. The shift in tone really makes the end of this siege pretty great.

EDIT: VVV :smith:

Have you heard about First Dog? It's a very good comic I just love.

Also, wear your bike helmets kids. I copped several blows to the head but my helmet left me totally unscathed.

Finally you should check out First Dog as it's a good comic I like it very much.

Saw my Daddy again in the hospital today. Markus_cz told him to take care, but Daddy said he would be fine. Markus_cz showed me the crutches again. They help dwarfs who hurt themselves walk and you can hit Giant Rats with them if they try to eat you. They are the best thing ever.

Daddy says he is going to try and spend some time with me when he can. "Life is too short" he says. I do not understand but one day I will. He told me so.

12th Malachite 241

Daddy looks gray. We played with goblin and dwarf figurines last night. Dwarves always win. That's why I am not afraid of the goblins outside. Even when the Ogres got inside last month, I was not afraid because dwarves always win.

14th Malachite 241

Daddy is not looking good. Markus_cz says he has an in-feck-shun. He says there's nothing he can do anymore. He told Mummy, Dirt, and I "If any of you believe in it, now would be a good time for prayer".

I don't know any prayers, but Ugath, please don't take my Daddy away.
