Product description
TvTv Soundtrack Coll ~ Schoolhouse Rock Rocks
Amazon.com
The beauty of Schoolhouse Rock in its original Saturday morning run (1973-85) was that kids watching couldn't tell whether the catchy three-minute cartoon jingles were meant to be commercials, shows, or something else entirely. That enabled overexposed TV youth to learn without realizing it between episodes of Scooby Doo and Fat Albert. Then the Brady Bunch generation became the alternative nation, and the innocence with which they took in these grammar, history, and math lessons was lost. Now comes the obligatory tribute album, Schoolhouse Rock Rocks--pleasant enough, but full of postmodern yuks and missed-the-point nostalgia that aim to celebrate but instead drain the joy from childhood memories.
Though it's somewhat interesting to hear Pavement turn "Mo More Kings" into lo-fi krautrock or Moby make "Verb: That's What's Happening" into industrial techno-pop, the performers who most successfully preserve Schoolhouse Rock's edutainment viability are those who are most cartoonish to begin with: Ween ("The Shot Heard 'round the World"), Biz Markie ("The Energy Blues"), and Daniel Johnston ("Unpack Your Adjectives"). The problem remains, nonetheless: Any revamping of these songs implies Schoolhouse Rock somehow needed to be made hipper. That none of these songs is better than its original proves how very unhip '70s kids have grown up to be. --Roni Sarig

- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2025I recently purchased the Schoolhouse Rock! CD, and I couldn't be happier with it! This collection brings back so many wonderful memories from childhood. I had a copy when my kids were little, but had given away a long time ago. I purchased this one for my new grandson!
The songs are catchy and engaging, Conjunction Junction and I'm Just a Bill. It's very upbeat.
Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2022Something I noticed in these reviews, this is a special compilation album released in originally in 1996. These are not Bob Doroughs original 70s recordings but rather re-recordings by popular 90s artists like Blind Melon and Moby. If you are looking for the OG, check disney plus or elsewhere. Those looking for School House Rock Rocks, you have found it, for used condition this CD is immaculate. No scratches to speak of. Case is intact and liner notes appear to never have been touched. I love this album and have searched everywhere as my original copy was scratched beyond playability. Thank you so much for having this CD, now my children can enjoy as I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2022Every single song is a banger!!! I promise you my funeral is going to be 48 minutes and 20 seconds because it’s just going to be this album being played. Had to buy the cd because Shot Heard Round the World/Ween and a couple other songs aren’t on YouTube. Worth every single dollar though. Seriously quit reading and buy it already. You will forever be happy.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2013I love that song off the cd and the entire album is fabulous. Children respond so well to music and this is the icing on the cake. I fell in love with The Tale of Mr. Morton by Skee-lo and that prompted me to get out and buy this educational jewel. I love how modern bands, at least they were modern at that time, got together and compiled this cd full of wonderful music. You can even dance to this. I've used it in the classroom with my students and with my own nieces and nephews. I highly recommend this.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2022About half the covers on this album were heavy metal. It was hard to even hear the words in several tracks. Others were pretty good. Overall, a fair album of covers of awesome original material. Several of the best were missing too.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2021Love this CD....I had it a million years ago and got lost somewhere in life.... So happy to be able to have it back in my collection!!! I mean conjunction junction, interplanet Janet, My hero zero.... the list goes on ....so fun
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2009This CD IS NOT the original Schoolhouse Rock recordings. The songs are somewhat the same but not with the original recording artists. If you want the real thing, do not order this CD.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2011I loved the original songs and the covers done by 90's artist are well done too. My daughter likes listening to it and so do I. A new generation enjoying these classics:)
