Fergie: One more transfer possible

12/ 1/2006

SIR Alex Ferguson has refused to rule out the possibility of bringing in another new face to bolster his Manchester United squad during the current transfer window.

Ferguson has already spent £12million on defensive duo Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra but it was expected those deals would conclude United's transfer business until the summer.

But it is well known the Red Devils chief is on the look-out for a central midfielder to replace departed skipper Roy Keane and it is becoming increasingly likely Thomas Gravesen will leave Real Madrid before the month is over.

Both United and Gravesen's agent John Sivebaek have denied reports in Denmark which claimed a Red Devils bid has already been lodged. But, after last night's 1-1 Carling Cup draw with Blackburn, Ferguson has admitted he is still window shopping.

"It is possible we could have one more," he said. "We are looking at some things at the moment.

"But I am very happy with the two signings I have made. They give us great defensive cover and they are both really good players."

Neither Vidic nor Evra were involved at Ewood Park, although both could be in contention for a place in Ferguson's squad for Saturday's Manchester derby at Eastlands.

Who would you like to see United go for? Have your say.

Joe, I agree that in the medium to long term we need to attempt to bring in top quality; but regardless of whether we succeed in bringing in a Diarra this summer (if indeed he is top quality?), we still need to improve the overall standard of our midfield. If we can begin that process this month, so much the better.

Jem , i disagree with you on that one. there is no point in buying half decent midfielders unless you think in a few years they would potentially be world beaters, especially given premiership style wages. Joey barton, carrick, we're looking long term here, and we will be playin in the champions league next season. Focus on that, even if we bought a world class midfielder now, how would that help the team? Would it win us the Carling cup?maybe.but we're out of premiership contention, unless something drastic happens to chelsea, and we're out of the champions league. It makes more sense to wait till the summer, wait for prices to settle, and then buy carefully, but with teh future in mind. there is no room for flops, not given current market prices. Not unless they were well worth it. They have to fit into a team. That's what makes it all so hard.
