- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2012"As we work our way up the technical management ladder we need more and more leadership to succeed. Linda demonstrates for us how accessible the understanding and the learning of leadership traits really are. They are in fact, encoded in our common myths, as we have found all of our highest and most innate virtues to be. It's an easy read as Linda removes the too often arcane and oft times over studied subject by clearly pointing out the lessons we have already been taught through her own personal exhibit and witness. And if you are already a good or a seasoned leader, Linda refreshes our rationale for being such with original, but meaningful insights. This book is enjoyable to read!"
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2013Very inspiring read--especially for those in the grind of federal contracting on either side. Linda is fabulously funny, and very deep a the same time. This book is amazing.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2012Your book was my vacation read. I thoroughly enjoyed the mixture of spirituality with leadership knowledge in a fun, conversational tone.
Of course, the great surprise was seeing DC Youth Orchestra Program in print and how it supported your life.
Thanks for writing your book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2012Being no stranger to the "Leadership" genre, my expectations for The Leadership Muse were somewhat set before I opened the cover. The general rules for these types of books are simple: make the reader feel empowered and inspired, make leadership seem simple, and outline steps to make taking over the world seem like a breeze. However, as I started reading Linda Cureton's book, I realized she approached the topic from a rather unique perspective.
She personalized the subject of leadership, often beginning chapters with anecdotes of her experiences and the subtle messages she derived from her life's path. Instead of trying to make it seem "easy", she admitted that it is, in fact, a challenging endeavor that requires motivation, dedication and unparalleled determination.
Woven throughout the text are quotes, metaphors, and mythological references that effectively inspire a reader to look for lessons in leadership all around them- in nature, in faith, in strangers and in the trials and tribulations they encounter. She portrays leadership not as a clear-cut science, but rather as the experience of summoning the wisdom to learn from every moment of your life, and carrying those lessons with you on your journey to becoming a leader.
My favorite part of the book, however, is the inclusion of the "Invoke Your Muse" journaling activities. They are insightful, thought-provoking prompts that encourage a reader to slow down and truly reflect--an exercise that many ambitious leaders (myself included) often don't take the time to do, because they are too busy pressing forward. Linda reminds us that becoming a leader does not result from unrelenting activity and reckless forward motion, but rather from self-reflection and focused contemplation.
Overall, it is a refreshing, personal and real text that readers of all ages and walks of life should be able to identify with, and draw inspiration, courage and guidance from. If you are looking for a "step" approach to leadership, I recommend all of the other titles in the genre. If you are looking for a Muse, look no further.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2012In Greek mythology there exists nine Muses that are the source of knowledge and serve to inspire creativity, particularly in literature and the arts. In Socrates' time, people thought that the Muses brought divine madness to those they favored, and turned those average mortals into first rate artists and geniuses. In modern times, the concept of a tenth Muse is used to speak to the ever-growing number of ways in which humans can demonstrate creativity and problem solving.
In her book The Leadership Muse, Linda Cureton asserts that "an organization without inspiration is destined for expiration", and the hero-leaders that succeed today are touched by a tenth Muse for leadership. This gift from the Leadership Muse is transferred via the people you meet throughout your life, combined with inward-looking self-analysis and meditation that results in a useful understanding of your own inspiration and of what it takes, in turn, to be an inspiring leader. Cureton's witty personal storytelling stitches an entertaining memoir into her message and gives the reader an understanding of the people who have influenced her leadership skills over the years.
I was particularly enamored with the author's attention to what is sometimes viewed as a fine line between inspiration and madness; leaders and people regarded as heroes do things that others might think irrational or foolish. These bold actions are credited to the influence of the Muse. She also extracts messages from her Muse that appear in the form of animals and desert ecosystems. Cureton's Muse-based world view compliments messages from myriad authors on leadership, many of which she cites.
Today's world needs many more hero-leaders, and Linda Cureton's mental model of a laurel-wearing Muse is meant to facilitate and propagate a sense of purpose in passionate service to others. A little divine madness of this sort is a very valuable thing indeed.
