Dwarves only go to sleep once every two or three months, but when they do, they sleep for days. Asehujiko posted:200 odd days for murder? What kind of sentence is that? I am very sorry, but I feel I have to veto this. While it probably won't come up at all, given how long the list is, I'd prefer that everyone who wants to be dwarfed get to be dwarfed before anyone gets re-dwarfed. Including people who sign up later than you. If we ever run completely dry of names, then I'll put in a call for re-dwarfing and the deceased can sign back up (and at that point if we get into the 500s, there will have to be at least a couple hundred dead). Loden Taylor posted:Deaths in the caverns, murder in the dormitory; HOW CAN I WRITE HAPPY, IDYLLIC MUSIC WHEN THIS PLACE IS A CORPSE FACTORY? Actually, this is one thing that kind of bothers me about worldgen/Legends mode: dwarves in Legends never get killed from accidents, such as falling into a pond or mining into magma. They only ever kill each other if they've been cursed in some way or are at war, too, so you never get random murders due to failed moods or tantrums after tragedy strikes. Of course there's no artifacts whatsoever during worldgen either, for that matter, so strictly speaking we ought to interpret that as meaning there are no Moods either (or that 100% of moods fail and aren't recorded in history). But what I'm getting at is that deaths in the caverns and murders in the dormitories ought to be standard fare for happy, idyllic dwarven life, at least at some kind of low-level background rate. Not enough to wipe out civilization, but given they can live up to 170 years and have a disturbing tendency to get married and have kids at the age of 12, there ought to be massive families and equally-massive amounts of carnage going on all the time. Leperflesh posted:Aaactually... Hmm, I'd forgotten about bashing. Still, before magma on a map with ample wood I'm more likely to have a highly skilled carpenter than a highly skilled armorer, and a masterpiece item has a 2x to hit/deflect modifier over lower quality items. Plus wood is usually lighter than metal, and less encumbrance can mean faster movement. So a masterpiece wood shield would arguably be better than a lower quality metal shield in most situations. (Of course once you tap magma, or on a map with plenty of lignite or bituminous coal, masterwork metal shields are easier to get.) On the other hand, after a few ambushes you're likely to get standard quality copper or iron shields for free.

Hammerbeatings the Wrongfulness of Conviction This is a Marble protest sign. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It menaces with implications of social unrest. On the item is an inscription in Obsidian. This relates to the unlawful conviction of Zaodai by the overseeer Zapdos in Bronzestabbed. (A dwarf youth with a dyed beard proudly displays the artifact)

For several days Kaishai's journal has nothing in it but terrible, horrible, no good, very bad drawings of stick-figure lizards being slaughtered by stick-figure ghost dwarves. Strangled lizards, disemboweled lizards, decapitated lizards, lizards skewered on spikes; it's a dead lizard party and every lizard everywhere is invited. 3rd Limestone 238 There have been no more lizards, and I was running out of ways to show their murder anyway. Instead there is a new Overseer. Zapdos does not have the same sort of enthusiasm in the job as OhCrap--yet, though I cannot picture him ever yelling 'heed!' so much--but if he intends us to have more booze I am willing to throw full support behind this initiative. I will give OhCrap a bar of soap as a gift, I think. She had fine quarters dug for me. She did not kill those dwarves, however guilty she acts, and I would express thanks before she gets killed herself by something or other. There is a betting pool running on what will kill a dwarf next. Also who dies. The latter is gauche, but I have put five plump helmets in the former with a guess of zombie lizards. 29th Limestone 238 Six dwarves in the pool had Zaodai. No one guessed Asehujiko for victim but 'in some dwarf's room while he sleeps' was a popular guess for place and time actually--I feel somewhat guilty about this; also guilty for being just as glad Zaodai did not seek a meeting if his preferred form of consolation is murder. I have hope that Zapdos will give the new militia good weapons and armor and cut down the losses (and increase the need for smelted bars). I hope also, therefore, he does not get killed by overthefalls before that can happen. There is something alarming about a fort that makes more dwarf corpses than anything else besides soap.

Middle class get bedrooms and study rooms and occasionally some decoration. Lower class just get bedrooms, screw those guys - So if a dwarf gets annoyed, I just kick someone out of the middle-class rooms and give them those. Works wonders in the new version; they're usually happy by the end of the month even if they started out sleeping in the rain next to their dead best friend, parents, and favorite cat. I think it must be all the wonderful engravings.

The owners of dead dwarves are indeed just as eligible for Overseership as the owners of living dwarves and the not-yet-dwarfed. There are several creative approaches for how to handle this in-game. The simplest is for the goon to play a dwarf with a different name than his or her username: just pick some variation or a new alias or whatever, and grab a migrant just like someone who isn't dwarfed yet. There are other options too. If the situation arises I will discuss it directly with the new Overseer and we'll pick something we find mutually agreeable.

1st Sandstone, 238 Idles has complained of not having a weapon. I pointed to the copper battle axe she carries. She explained she was a hammerdwarf. It seems that we are in need of even more weapons than I thought. More warhammers are obviously needed. But the only forge is currently used to create much needed armor. Expansion is necessary. I have a plan. Forges and workshops will be transferred to below the dining hall and living areas. New stairway will provide easier access to all levels as well. The old ramps will be removed and blocked off. 5th Sandstone, 238 Digging begins on the new stairs. Some need to be constructed from blocks. Hopefully there are masons available. New workshop area has been designated. Relevent stockpiles for raw materials will be placed adjacent to them. I have also cancelled the building of minecart tracks. Wheelbarrows will have to do for now. 7th Sandstone, 238 More masons are needed. I will have Tunicate and Peas instruct life_souce, NineofEight, Hosile Rabbi, Slick Slinky and Saith in the basics of brick laying and whatever masons do. Anela Cistine has not yet imprisoned Zaodai. Hopefully she will soon. He is unstable. Moonwalk has been spotted standing near where he died. I have designated three new tombs and am trying to get i poo poo trains and Ventnor into theirs. I have also discovered why the stairs are still unconstructed. Masons are busy paving room for useless well. I have suspended its construction until the reservoir is fixed. 8th Sandstone, 238 Zaodai is in prison. Hopefully his sentence will give him time to reflect upon his crimes. 9th Sandstone, 238 Stairs are constructed. Digging continues on workshop project. Ghost of Moonwalk banished. Hopefully i poo poo trains and Ventnor will be entombed before they rise as well. Miners are not mining. I will have to talk with them. 10th Sandstone, 238 I have temporarily some of suspended Nettle Soup's hauling duties. Steke already has none, but refuses to mine anyway. Problem found. Many dwarves perminently assigned to indoors burrow, which does not include designated mining areas. Existing burrows are deleted. New emergency ones will be created. This also solves problem with recovering bodies. 11th Sandstone, 238 Public Opinion reports absence of logs. Many trees designated already, but ignored. Rogue burrows suspected. 12th Sandstone, 238 OhCrap personally recovers Ventnor's body. This is good as there are dwarves who blame him for many deaths. Perhaps this will show them his remorse. Chickenfrogdwarf recovers i poo poo trains' body. 14th Sandstone, 238 New recruit Ajaxify is throwing tantrums. Perhaps it has to do with her not wearing any clothing? It seems that entirety of The Artifacts of Faith are also mostly or completely naked. This makes their recent request of becoming an all wrestling team even more disturbing. Gnu Sheriff in Town wears nothing and carries a whip. I do not know what to think. If they do not own any clothing then we have bigger problems. More farm plots for pig tails necessary. 15th Sandstone, 238 Further survey reveals other dwarves all wear clothing. Artifacts of Faith reformed as Gnu Order. Hopefully by removing their uniform they will put clothing back on. 16th Sandstone, 238 Ajaxify has calmed down but she is still miserable. Other dwarves are unhappy as well. Own son laments lack of well. Passed Zaodai today. Does not seem happy about being in prison. Hopes for rehabilitation fading. 18th Sandstone, 238 Digging of workshops halfway done. Staircase complete. Stockpiles will be set up. 19th Sandstone, 238 More weapons ordered. Armor cancelled. Armor is needed but less important than weapons. 20th Sandstone, 238 I saw Vox Nihili weaving cloth. Vox Nihili is metalsmith but also weaver. I inform him that he has more important things to do. He agreed. I left him to his work. 21st Sandstone, 238 Gnu Sheriff in Town is again wearing clothes. Unfortunately Ajaxify and Anela still are not. Stone-using workshops moved into new area. 23rd Sandstone, 238 I order the construction of more rock blocks as well as tables and thrones for the nearly empty dining room. 23rd Sandstone, 238 Migrants spotted in the distance. I will record their names at the end of the month, too busy now. 25th Sandstone, 238 Giant toad attacks OhCrap's War Dog. The Creations of Luck ordered to kill it. 26th Sandstone, 238 Ajaxify went insane. Reportedly was finally putting clothes on when he stopped, screamed in rage and charged out of the stockpile area right into Olesh. Olesh was bruised but is OK. New arrival Pladdicus killed Ajaxify with one incredible shot. I will keep an eye on this Pladdicus. Shows promise. 27th Sandstone, 238 Toad bites off NineofEight's right foot. Starguarded finally takes the beast down. The brave dog Ezum unfortunately found dead. 28th Sandstone, 238 Rest of tombs dug out. More coffins are needed and they need smoothing. Likewise new workshops are nearly ready. End of month. Zapdos fucked around with this message at 22:42 on Jul 26, 2012 |
