My boyfriend and I booked a vacation in Greece (Santorini) for July 2012. We have been getting worrying news about the economic crisis in Greece. We would very much like to stick to our plan to go to Santorini in July, but we have been having second thoughts lately, mainly due to the fact, that we want to have a vacation without demonstrations, strikes, closed airports...

What do you fellow travelers think? Is Santorini safe to go in July? Is the situation going to change after the election?

We would much appreciate your thoughts.

Santorini is a touristic paradise.

Spent a few days in Mykonos and Santorini as a solo traveller in late May. You'll find that the islands are quite removed from all of the turmoil in Athens. I felt very safe walking around alone on both islands. In fact, I'm planning another solo trip in September :)

"Which turmoil ?"

greek-traveller there is quite a lot of coverage on the UK news at the moment re the 'Euro Crisis' and the problems that the Greeks are facing. They were interviewing a family in Athens, the lady worked at the hospital and hadn't been paid for 8 months, the husband was a taxi driver and working 17 hours a day to support his family and parents. There were people who had lost their jobs and homes and it didn't paint a pretty picture. I can't comment on Athens as I haven't been there for years and I'm sure there are similar problems in many capital cities. However, after having returned from Paxos earlier this week I can confirm that life on the islands is 'business as usual' and as always I had a fantastic holiday in Greece and will be returning in September to Symi.

Life in Athens is business as usual too.

I live in Athens and i can definitely comment about it.

This does not mean people don't have a problem. It's just not noticeable.

Currently we are squashed between dropping salaries and hiking taxes. This does not affect the visitor's experience at all though.

I am sure people have seen their incomes shrinking in Paxos too, with hiking taxes too. It did not affect your experience though at all.

These articles are actually extremely damaging to local economy, by scaring peopel off and portraying a deceptively bad image.

I agree Nick, it annoys me when people express surprise when they find I'm still going to Greece - I've been visiting for 20 odd years and hopefully will continue visiting for many more years to come. I'm already doing research for next year's trip.

I didn't want to use the words 'media hype' and belittle the problems that some people are facing but as I said before major cities worldwide have similar problems and there are plenty of homeless people in London. That some people are considering cancelling their holidays seems absurd to me.

Go to Greece and have a brilliant time, it's a wonderful country with beautiful islands, friendly people and wonderful weather - not forgetting the very palatable local wine too ;-)

Mostly just reiterating what everyone else has said here, but just thought I'd add my two cents. I was just in Greece for the past three months, and I've got to say, I never saw any demonstrations or disturbances at all. Everyone I met was friendly, and talked civilly (although passionately) about the political and economic troubles. Outside of the big cities of Athens and Thessaloniki, I really don't think you're going to run into any trouble at all. Santorini is beautiful, but very much geared toward tourism, so they're not going to do anything to jeopardize that, and the same it true for Mykonos. I would say, unless something really major changes in the next couple weeks, which seems unlikely, you should go and enjoy your island vacations.
