| Using the JESS Equation Editor |
[Update: In all 2006 releases of JESS, an improved version of the inline equation editor described below is now available to students and teachers within the new JESS Forum. To make the equation editor available, the Forum WYSIWYG option must be turned on for the organization, and the user must have "Use formatted text in the Forum" checked in their new pervasive user profile.]
When the CourseBuilder WYSIWYG is installed in JESS, it provides instructors with powerful tools for adding math content to courses. The math symbol library included in JESS is expanded and made easier to use, and a library of 102 point-and-click equation templates for algebra, matrices, calculus, fractions, and even long division is embedded into JESS.

To add an equation to your content page, click on the editor button that looks like a square root . A popup like the one below will appear:

Click to see a full-sized version
The popup is divided into two sections, “Common Equation Templates,” and a scrollable area called “All Equation Templates.” The first area contains templates for fractions, square roots, and calculus. The second contains all of the templates, divided into the following categories:
Fractions
Math (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
Algebra and Statistics (the largest collection)
Formulas and More
Oversized Brackets
Bordered Text Areas
Matrices and Empty Templates
Click on the template you would like to use. The equation template will appear where your cursor is in the content. The # character will be typed into the template’s text areas, simply click into them and start typing, then delete the # characters that are left.
If you would like to see borders that show the structure of the template and where you can type, you can click on the editor’s toggle borders button . A light, dashed line will appear showing the framework of the template. This can be handy if you are nesting templates to make a complex equation.
Templates can be inserted into a line of text and will usually appear to be part of the text. Or, you can place them on a line by themselves.
To add math symbols, click on the editor button that looks like a fancy “E” . It too offers different categories:
Common Symbols
Greek Symbols
Math Symbols (these are browser-safe HTML math symbols)
MetaMath Images (a very large collection of public domain images of math symbols that can be inserted into text)
Other Symbols

Simply click on the symbol you need, and it will appear in your content where your cursor was last.
Later, if you need to edit your equations, you can. You can also reuse the content page with it’s equations in any JESS course.
