Meridor slams Israeli cyber attacks on Arab websites

Minister of Intelligence Services says no one should perpetrate cyber assaults in Israel's name

Minister of Intelligence Services Dan Meridor criticized Wednesday the recent cyber attacks by Israeli hackers on Arab websites.

A series of attacks by several Arab hackers on Israeli websites has brought about similar retaliation by Israeli hacker. Monday's attack on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange website by a pro-Palestinian group calling itself "Nightmare" was met by a similar hit on the stock exchange websites of Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, on Tuesday evening.

Tuesday also saw Israeli hackers leak lists containing the details of hundreds of Saudi email and Facebook accounts.

"We don't normally target innocent websites," the hackers said. "But this is a cyber war – and every war has its casualties."

"There is no evidence that these hackers are indeed Saudi," Meridor told Israel Radio Wednesday.

"Individual initiatives by Israeli hackers to attack Saudi hackers, or hackers from anywhere else for that matter, are ineffective and shouldn’t be done in Israel's name," he added, in what was essentially the first condemnation of the cyber attacks by a member of the government.

Meridor did not say what legal measures, if any, would be taken against Israeli hackers.
