Trenches Generals adds yet another to that number, as this latest WiiWare release is based on a game that first came to the iPhone in late 2009. It's a comical, side-scrolling strategy game – a bit like Plants vs. Zombies, but with a larger horizontal battlefield and soldiers that you command to advance across into enemy territory instead of having them constantly staying rooted down on defense.
Defense is still the major focus, though, as the game is named for trenches – and the dug-out, partially underground structures play a big role in whether you're successful or not. You and your enemy each start from opposite ends of a wide arena, and you have to advance forward just a bit, hunker down in a trench and upgrade it up to a bunker, then advance forward a bit more to the next trench, upgrade it . . . and so on. Eventually you make it to the enemy's fortress and destroy it, winning the stage.
It's a fine design, but it's just not all that exciting. The iPhone feel is still all over it, as the Wii cursor control scheme is clearly pasted overtop of an interface that used to use direct touches with your fingers on Apple's device. There are tons of different extra gameplay modes included here (even a Zombie rush, further linking this to PvZ), so the value will certainly be there for those who invest the time and effort to really dig deep.
