“Female Nude” by Victor Jules Bergeron, Jr.

Victor Jules Bergeron, Jr. American, 1902-1984 “Female Nude” Bronze Signed and dated 1969 on base Height 64 ½ in. Width 19 in. The life size figure modeled as if walking with a drape held in her hand trailing behind is inscribed on the base of the sculpture “Victor Bergeron, 1969.” This original bronze sculpture was commissioned by Rudolph Pabst and his wife.. Rudolph Pabst is the beer baron for the label Pabst Blue Ribbon. The sculpture comes with photographs of the sculpture as it was being made in the studio of Victor Jules Bergeron. Also a signed letter dated July 1, 1969 from Victor Jules Bergeron addressed to Rudolph Pabst accompanies the sculpture. Victor Jules Bergeron, Jr. was the founder of a chain of Polynesian-themed restaurants that bore his nickname, Trader Vic. A native of the Bay Area, Bergeron attended Heald College in San Francisco and in 1934 he opened a small bar/restaurant in Oakland named Hinky Dink’s. As its popularity spread, the menu and décor developed an increasingly tropical flair and Hinky Dink’s soon became Trader Vic’s. In 1944 Trader Vic, now a celebrity chef, was credited with creating the Mai Tai. The overall success of the business led to a number of restaurants by the same name and Trader Vic’s is often considered as one of the first successful themed chains.
