Living Reality: My Extraordinary Summer With "Sailor" Bob Adamson Paperback – December 1, 2005

4.8 out of 5 stars 80 ratings

After thirty years of seeking liberation, James Braha had nearly given up on finding fulfillment. His mind began to change, however, when he encountered the Hindu/Vedic philosophy of non-duality. Upon reading “Sailor” Bob Adamson's book What's Wrong with Right Now Unless You Think About It? James immediately invited Bob to come from Australia to share his knowledge with Americans. For five glorious weeks in the summer of 2004, Bob and his wife stayed with the Braha family at their home in Florida. Spiritual talk with arguably the greatest non-duality teacher alive continued from morning till night, as James' dearest friends and spiritualists from around the country joined the investigations into the truth of reality versus the illusion of appearance. This is a story of liberation, friendship, humor, and love, as Sailor Bob takes spiritual aspirants beyond the need for help, just as Nisargadatta Maharaj did for him thirty years ago. It is one of the warmest, most heartfelt treatises on non-duality ever written. In the summer of 2004,Sailor Bob Adamson - one of the greatest teachers of non duality and Eastern musticism - visited the home of James Braha, where talks were held for five weeks. The talks, which were transcibed, make up 250 pages of the book, while the remaining 100 pages is commentary by James Braha.

The author his friends and others who were serious seekers of the truth get to spend 5 weeks with Sailor Bob Adamson to finally attains clear understanding. I enjoyed the back and forth between James and his friends and Sailor Bob. Many of the questions were excellent in that they really summarized what I believe the doubts and misunderstanding many of us have or have had about non duality and it’s implications and they get answered with great clarity and consistency by Bob Adamson. They really hammered away on the seeing of the false reference point, on understanding and taking your stand there not in appearances. One example most can relate to. “I get it intellectually but” , Bob Adamson and James Braha made the powerful point what does that mean? You get it or you don’t. If you get it then put your faith so to speak in that not in appearances. You get that the ocean water isn’t blue and don’t forget or believe otherwise when you look out at the ocean. Also the false reference point will come up but having seen its unreality we don’t get stuck there. Worthwhile read.

Most books about spirituality tell you about the goal that you may someday achieve, providing you do the right thing and keep at it - those abilities and powers are just waiting for the worthy. But for those of us who have been on this path for a long time, and who in all honesty can't say we've accomplished those things, it is for us that this book is intended. It is down to earth and honestly written, not promising anything, but maybe achieving more by virtue of this "living reality." Read it. It is worth your time.

This book easily qualifies as among the most comprehensive one could find on the subject of non duality. Though it gets repetitive(unavoidable though because, for instance, Sailor Bob finds himself reiterating the same messages but to different people in his talks), I found certain very relevant issues brought out including things seldom if ever found in other sources. One instance that readily comes to mind is the desirability of having thought relegated to a diminished role to then allow for the greater availability of one's sensual life(a comment then on how our overindulgence in thoughts deprives us of what these sensual experiences could be potentially capable of). And speaking of experience, the author and Sailor Bob repeatedly stress that it's NOT basking in experience that should constitute an end goal because that kind of perspective never realizes just how transient any experiences are(and misleading as well since they could fool the unwary into believing they've attained some level of "Enlightenment" when it's anything BUT that). The key thing to grasp is that we all dwell in the dream world with its endless array of appearances, this against the ever present backdrop of an intelligent energy source or consciousness and with it there's not an iota of difference separating the ambitious, time preoccupied seeker from the most realized sage.

Doing a full length review beyond what I've done would take up too much space(ah yes, even "space", the underlying characteristic of our true nature!), but suffice it to say that if one isn't already knowledgeable about Advaita/nonduality and reads the book and is genuinely open enough to be ripe for the messages contained within it, he/she might be fortunate enough to acquire the "true understanding" that takes them beyond an only intellectual grasp of the subject.

What i love about James Braha's book is that it is a one of a kind opportunity to sit in on a long retreat setting with Sailor Bob, a master of direct pointing Advaita or non-duality. It conveys a sense of "being there" like no other non-duality book, and i am including John Wheeler and others in that consideration. There is a major flaw, though, which is that Braha appears to conclude that he has found the holy grail of enlightenment, yet admits that his state is changing and evolving even as he writes down his words.

In sum, i highly recommend this book for someone who has not yet truly tasted non-duality. It is brilliant and well written. It is, i think, the best practical introduction to non-duality, a point others have made in their reviews. At the same time, it is, quite innocently i believe, misdirecting readers into thinking that the non-duality space experienced by Braha and approved of by Sailor Bob is the be all and end all of non-dual enlightenment and Advaita. The state Braha discovered with the help of Sailor Bob and is now stabilizing in is only the beginning!

To learn more about what lies ahead on the path of enlightenment beyond the brand new sage experience of James Braha, i recommend "1000" by Ramaji. It describes four stages of non-dual enlightenment. According to that book, Braha is in the first stage and Sailor Bob is in the second stage. By comparison, Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj completed the fourth and final stage.

This book is as inspirational as Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi. It is very simply and clearly written and is extraordinarily helpful as a guide to know oneself. Sailor Bob helps one see that you are consciousness itself, right here and right now. Your spiritual searching ends with this book and rather than being a spiritual seeker--you now are a spiritual finder. You find yourself. Understanding is all. This book helps you to understand who you really are and you discover that you were always here--free and whole--but you simply didn't see that. Truth is so simple that we overlook it. Braha has written a spiritual classic.

Beautiful journey to freedom, written in great language, packed with pointers, gentle but direct, extremely effective and addressing all aspects of awakening from belief in being separate individual... Essence of Bob Adamson as pattern or personality is so there: in the photos, between the lines, in love that reading evokes... Wonderful, wonderful book!
