Imagine having next to nothing one day and a six-year contract worth around $20 million the next.

Ryan Clady was absorbing that probability Thursday as his agent Pat Dye Jr. and the Broncos continued to negotiate his contract. No agreement had been reached as of 10 p.m. Thursday, an indication negotiations had snagged.

Still, Clady was optimistic he would sign his deal in time for the Broncos’ first training camp workout, which will begin at 11:15 a.m. today.

“We’re close,” Clady said Thursday night, “but we’re not there yet.”

The parameters of the deal would include guarantees of from $10.7 million to $11 million and an option for the rookie left tackle to void after his fifth season providing he meets certain playing-time incentives.

What will Clady buy first once he collects a portion of his NFL bonus?

“Probably some furniture,” Clady said. “Although I still have to get a place worked out.”

Broncos players are to begin reporting for physicals at 6 a.m. today. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan will then lead the team’s season-opening meeting before commencing the workout at 11:15 a.m. — the deadline for Clady to finish negotiations.
