Hawaii hotel occupancy slips

Hawaii hotel room occupancy slipped 3 percentage points to 70.9 percent for the week ending May 24.
Compared to the same week last year, occupancy was down on all islands except the Big Island, where the rate grew 5.1 percentage points to 63.3 percent occupancy.
Maui occupancy dropped 11.1 percentage points to 72 percent, Oahu was down 0.6 of a percentage point to 71.3 percent, and Kauai occupancy slipped 1.5 percentage points to 79 percent.
Room rates, meantime, were up 1.2 percent statewide to an average of $203 a night.
Oahu rates climbed 2.1 percent to $179, Maui rates were up 3.7 percent to $260, and Big Island rates grew 1.3 percent to $182.
Only Kauai saw a reduction in average room rates, down about 1 percent to $205 a night.
Nationwide, hotel room occupancy fell 2.5 percentage points to 66.9 percent, while average room rates were up 4.2 percent to $108.
