Building a Jet Dragster

by Mick McCormick

Easy exit for now. Next step is the Roll Cage. Ever see a 275 lb. guy chicken wing himself out of a dragster?

Classic Dragster chassis with one twist. Here it is seen from the best angle, the driver's seat. Front spindle mounted brakes will be necessary to stage. I found that the trick is to get the car's thrust to weight ratio (when in turbine only) to be right at the point of sliding through the lights.

The nose cone is store bought. Some things are just easier purchased.

When the light turns "go," you close the bleed bands and send fuel to the afterburner.

The Mill, a J-60, actually a gas generator off a turbo shaft. From a Helicopter, but same thing, basically.

The J-60 turbine bleeds some of the compressor air off via holes in the front couple of stages. This aids in starting the turbine and helps me control the car (which if you remember should be balanced right at the point of sliding through the lights with all four wheels locked up and turbine at 100%!)

John Jacobsen is in charge of welding and fetching beer.

The seat is usually one piece.

Ahh, I love that feeling of sitting in your new ride for the first time.

Stay tuned for back half, burner can, fuel manifold, and plumbing.

Mick
