~~~NOTHIN' BUT SKILL: AN ORLANDO MAGIC FRANCHISE~~~
|||TEAM HISTORY|||
For such a young team, the Orlando Magic have a very rich history. Starting as an expansion team in 1989, they made their first playoff berth in the '93-'94 season, first-pick Shaquille O'Neal's second season. Shaq and his "wing man," Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway, formed a fearsome duo, which made the playoffs every year from 1993-1996, every year they were together. In those years, they made the NBA Finals only once, and were readily swept by the Houston Rockets. After the 1996 season, Shaq left the Magic to join the Los Angeles Lakers through Free Agency. From then until the year 2000, they only made the playoffs twice ('96-'97 and '98-'99), and failed to reach the NBA Finals both years.
In 2000, the Magic added superstars Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill, both of whom looked to make an immediate impact. However, due to several injuries, Hill failed to play 100 games for the Magic. McGrady would lead Orlando to the playoffs his first three seasons with the team, advancing past the first round only once. After a disappointing fourth season, McGrady was traded to Houston for Steve Francis, among other pieces. Also, the Magic drafted High School phenom Dwight Howard with their first pick. After a poor 2004-2005 season, Francis was traded during the '05-'06 season to the New York Knicks. The Magic would just miss out on the playoffs that year. However, with a promising group of young athletes, they would make the playoffs next year, only to be swept by the Detroit Pistons in the first round.
|||EASTERN CONFERENCE PREVIEW - PART I: ATLANTIC DIVISION|||
Boston Celtics
After several big off season moves, the Boston Celtics are primed and ready to make a run to the NBA Finals. Paul Pierce returns for his tenth season in a Celtic uniform. Throughout all those ten years, he has never been part of a team quite as talented (on paper) as this one. "We've always had a good team," says Pierce, "but this year's different. This year, we have a team of All-Stars ready to make our mark on the league." Joining the 30-year-old Pierce in the front-court is 23-year-old Kendrick Perkins, and newly-added, 31-year-old star Kevin Garnett. Fresh out of Minnesota, KG is ready to help his new teammates reach new heights for the new-look Boston Celtics. In the back-court, 21-year-old Rajon Rondo will be bringing the ball up the court, and setting up sweet-shooting 32-year-old Ray Allen, who was recently acquired from the Seattle Supersonics.
{Bottom Line: Allen, Pierce, and Garnett will form a trio that will be the premier squad in the East.}
--------------------------------------------------
[New Jersey Nets]
The Nets feel as though they were so close to reaching the top, but something always goes wrong when it matters most, and they always fall short. To them, this year will be different. Jason Kidd returns, and at 34, he knows that his time for an NBA Championship is running short. "I admit it, I'm getting older. But with this team, I truly feel we can go the distance this year." Assisting Kidd in his goal is his back-court partner, Vince Carter. "Vinsanity" is most known for his incredible dunking skills, but he can do more than that. He can drain the three, shoot the jumper, dish the rock, drive the lane, and dunk the ball...he can do a lot of things, and very well. But, they can't do it alone: Richard Jefferson has been with the Nets for his entire career, and has made the NBA Finals before (twice in a row), but has never tasted victory. He hopes this year will be different. The front court starters are up in the air; the Nets are deep in the front-court, but don't have any stars. Most likely, Sean Williams and Jamaal Magloire will make up the starting front court, but only time will tell if they stay.
{Bottom Line: Kidd, Carter, and Jefferson are hoping this year will be different than all the other ones...it won't.}
--------------------------------------------------
[New York Knicks]
The New York Knicks have been the laughing stock of the NBA for a while now, but they're looking to change that for good this year. Stephon Marbury has been known to want to be more of a scorer than a point guard, but his coaches have been doing their best to make him play for the team, and not for himself. Joining him in the back-court is Jamal Crawford, who is sick and tired of being on such an embarrassing team. "It sucks. There's no other way to put it." Quentin Richardson is entering his third year as the team's small forward, and he knows more than anybody the pain of being on this team. New to the mix is Zach Randolph, who was acquired from the Portland Trailblazers. The Blazers weren't a very good team either, but he hopes to come to the Knicks, and transform them into the winner many people think Portland will be this year. Eddy Curry rounds up the starting lineup, and its quite obvious he doesn't want to be in New York as long as they keep playing like they do.
{Bottom Line: They're the Knicks...enough said.}
--------------------------------------------------
[Philadelphia 76ers]
Enter post-Iverson year two for the 76ers. Shooting guard Andre Iguodala has become the team's new "AI," the teams new face. He hopes that he can lead this team to the Finals, which will not be an easy task. "Most of the so-called 'experts' are labeling us out of the playoffs already. They don't think we can do anything without Iverson. We'll show them all that they're dead wrong this year." Iguodala's point guard this year will be Andre Miller, who played about half of the season here last year. Him and Iguodala have turned out to be a good combination so far, and they hope to continue that this year. The shooter on this team will be Kyle Korver once again, and nobody has any problem with that. Shavlik Randolph returns to the team for a third year, looking to improve on his 2.7 points per game so far in his career. Samuel Dalembert will be the big-man leader for this team, and will have to make a large impact if the 76ers hope to go anywhere this year.
{Bottom Line: Iguodala really wants to go places this year, however, those places won't be including a deep run into the playoffs.}
--------------------------------------------------
[Toronto Raptors]
Star Power Forward Chris Bosh is entering his fifth year in the league, and is looking to improve on his previous stats. He will be a major role in the overall success of his team this season. Rasho Nesterovic is joining Bosh in the front-court for the second straight season, and hopes to assist Bosh in punishing the other teams in the league. Point Guard TJ Ford is clearly the back-court leader of this team, and rightfully so. Him and Bosh form a very lethal combination that every team fears. Anthony Parker is entering his fifth year in the NBA, and second with the Raptors is hoping to help out his team in their hopeful march to the playoffs. Three-point-star Jason Kapono will act as a large asset, being able to knock down clutch threes time and time again.
{Bottom Line: Bosh and Ford will lead the Raptors to the playoffs this year, but that's about it.}
Note - Sorry about my last post, I pressed post instead of preview about half way through this update, so instead of editing it to an update, I decided to just update in a separate post because of the time it takes.
