- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 July 2013One of those books that I took out form the library and had to have for myself. A real tour-de-force for the architectural enthusiast.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 March 2018Disappointing. I was expecting a book about global architecture: this deals with British architecture with occasional mentions of global buildings. For example, can buildings in places like Chiswick and Hempstead Garden Suburb really be classed as iconic buildings on a world scale, to the exclusion of actually iconic buildings which are important globally?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 July 2012I liked the cover of the book immediately and I believe today and especially because the book is dealing with aesthetic to be a good indication of the quality of the work... It is a valuable object to have around in any household. It makes people dream and talk of places they have visited and would like to visit and their own vision of beauty. It has the right balance of analsyis, information and pictures. It is neither too heavy nor too bulky to stand negligently on a shelf or a coffee table...
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2008This is an easy read, which I didn't expect from a book on architecture, with lots of good pictures. It's less a rigid history, though, than a romp through the best stories: for example, the fierce 'Battle of the Styles' that raged over the Gothic/Classical styles in Victorian Britain. This is an approachable introduction for anyone who enjoys wandering round the streets of London, New York or Paris, and who's also interested in architecture's origins.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 May 2009Rather dissapointed, I was particulary interested in the cover picture of the Baha'i Temple in Delhi. Only to find no reference to it in the whole Book! Very strange! Otherwise good just a very strange ommition?

2.0 out of 5 stars too much personal opinion
I was looking for a good summary of The History of Architecture; there's too much personal editorializing for me - hard to forget through

Gaynor Aaltonen, a professional journalist and communications specialist, has written an accessble and affordable survey of the history of architecture. Written in a comfortable style with nice photographs, Aaltonen introduces readers to primarily Western architecture with some focus on the central aspects of the major historical periods, some of their major architects and some of their buidlings. The book falls short on the historical background to eadh period through oversimplification and omission. She writes, for example, "The ancient Greeks believed that everything in nature was controlled by a god." Not really. The Greeks questioned their gods morality, efficacy and even existence. The Greeks were highly rational, analytical and never ceased asking questions. That's how the Athenians came of with the Parthenon. So, serious students of architectural history (and hobbyists) might be better off with Scully or Trachtenberg/Hyman or Kostoff or Ching. These might be a slower slog, but accuracy and analysis here, I think, should trump ease of access.
