(RTTNews) - Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Wednesday warned against the possible Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, saying that it would plunge the already volatile area into deeper chaos and added that it would be very stressful on the United States.
"My strong preference, here, is to handle all of this diplomatically with the other powers of governments, ours and many others, as opposed to any kind of strike occurring," Admiral Mullen told reporters at a Pentagon press conference on Wednesday.
"This is a very unstable part of the world. And I don't need it to be more unstable," he added.
Though tensions have been high in the region after reports of a possible Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear installations, Admiral Mullen refused to disclose the details of his talks with the Israelis during his recent visit to the Jewish country.
"I've been pretty clear before that from the United States' perspective, the United States' military perspective in particular, that opening up a third front right now would be extremely stressful on us," Mullen said.
Mullen acknowledged that Iran remains "a destabilizing factor in the region", but added that the solution "still lies in using other elements of national power to change Iranian behavior, including diplomatic, financial and international pressure."
