David Humphreys Miller - Native American portaitist & historian
Portrait of David Humphreys Miller

David Humphreys Miller was more than an artist, he was a leading authority on American Indian and Western history. He is most famous for his lithographic portraits, from life, of 72 Indian survivors of the Battle of Little Big Horn on June 25, 1876 (also known as "Custer's Last Stand").

The Indians spoke no English, so in order to get the true story, he interviewed them in their own language. This helped him become their close and personal friend.
