Renesas has Linux-based reference design for SH processor

Renesas Technology has teamed with German company Emtrion to create a reference design for its SH7722 multimedia processors.

The HiCO.SH7722 reference system consists of a carrier board and the CPU-core-module in SO-DIMM format. The CPU module contains, in addition to the processor, the respective memories, USB2.0 Host and Device interfaces and a 100Mbit Ethernet interface.

The HiCO.SH7722 is supported by a Linux Board Support Packages featuring an up to date Linux kernel, compiler and tool-chain versions.

“We have been working very closely with Renesas for many years during which several SuperH processor-based board products and customer specific products have been developed,” said Dipl.-Ing. Dieter Baur, CEO emtrion.

“Our advantage is the early access to specifications Renesas provides us with. The addition of the HiCO.SH7722 to our product portfolio now provides our industrial customers the solution for a low power multimedia capable module satisfying their need for high performance, long time delivery and SW support,” said Baur.

All signals are available on a 200-pin SO-DIMM connector. The carrier board offers all components that are needed for highly integrated systems like audio- and video- codecs, power supply and connectors.

The SH7722 incorporates the SH4AL-DSP CPU offering 600MIPS at 333MHz operation. The device also provides various peripheral functions that are suited to multimedia applications including a MPEG-4, H.264 capable video engine offering H.264 video encode/decode up to VGA resolution with 30FPS, a JPEG encode/decode hardware accelerator, a 2D graphics accelerator, a LCD controller, a 5M Pixel camera interface, and sound input/output.

The SH7722 incorporates SDRAM interface expandable up to 64-bit bus width and USB 2.0 high-speed function as well as a SD Card interface.
