Product description
Synopsis The Beginning: The Making of Electric Ladyland DVD comes forty years after the initial release of Electric Ladyland , the third and final album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It was the last Hendrix studio album to have been produced during the guitar icon’s lifetime and reflects his meticulous involvement in every facet of its creation. The DVD documents the creation of the album that was released in the fall of 1968 as a two LP set. Some of Jimi’s closest associates are seen on screen discussing their recollections of Hendrix and the project including JHE bassist Noel Redding, drummer Mitch Mitchell, manager Chas Chandler who discovered Hendrix after he left the Animals; drummer Buddy Miles who appeared on the album and later went on to work with Hendrix in The Band of Gypsys, Jefferson Airplane’s Jack Casady, Steve Winwood and Dave Mason from Traffic and others who participated in the Electric Ladyland sessions that took place at Olympic studios in London and The Record Plant in New York. Originally produced in 1997 as the premiere episode the acclaimed Classic Albums television series, The Making of Electric Ladyland is newly edited with expanded features and almost 40 minutes of additional content not seen in the original feature. Tracklisting Prologue / Burning of the Midnight Lamp / …And The Gods Made Love / All Along The Watchtower / Rainy Day, Dream Away / Still Raining, Still Dreaming / Voodoo Chile / Crosstown Traffic / Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) / Little Miss Strange / Gypsy Eyes / South Saturn Delta / House Burning Down / 1983… (A Merman I Should Turn To Be) / Long Hot Summer Night / Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) / Epilogue

Originally produced in 1997 as part of the Classic Albums series, The Making of Electric Ladyland is reissued here newly edited and with some 40 minutes of additional material, making it a genuine treasure trove for Jimi Hendrix fans. Recorded in fits and starts during an arduous, poorly planned tour of America and released in 1968, Electric Ladyland was the third and final studio album the rock-guitar legend completed during his lifetime, and while it was arguably not his greatest--many would argue in favor of its more focused predecessors, Are You Experienced and Axis: Bold as Love--its his most ambitious and most experimental; it originally occupied two full vinyl discs and featured several additional musicians, songs by other writers, an extended blues jam, and one piece, "1983 A Merman I Should Turn to Be," that took up almost all of one side. A lot of the folks who took part in the recording are on hand to discuss it, including several who are no longer with us (like producer Chas Chandler, bass player Noel Redding, and drummers Buddy Miles and Mitch Mitchell, both of whom died in 2008). The musicians insights and recollections are cool; organist Mike Finnigan sits at his Hammond B-3 and demonstrates the deep groove the band created for "Rainy Day, Dream Away" (a session Finnigan was never paid for!), while bass player Jack Casady of the Jefferson Airplane plugs in and replicates the part he played on "Voodoo Chile." But the best moments come when engineer Eddie Kramer sits at the mixing console and isolates different tracks from various tunes, revealing touches like Hendrixs harpsichord part on "Burning of the Midnight Lamp," his comb-kazoo playing(!) on "Crosstown Traffic," and the electric sitar he jacked through a wah-wah pedal on "1983." There are also vintage interview clips with Hendrix himself, as well as talk about his work habits, his lifestyle, and the controversial photo of nude women that originally adorned the cover. But its the music that matters, and The Making of Electric Ladyland is a fascinating look at the work of one of musics true immortals. --Sam Graham

- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2021Eddie Kramer at the mixing desk going through each track with various members from the original sessions. Fascinating. Too bad that many of the guys (Mitch, Noel, Chas, Buddy) have since past but their names will be seared into history forevermore with their work on this phenomenal record.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2013All these years later, having listened to Electric Lady Land until the groves wore out, it was wonderful to be able to see the "behind the scenes" workings of the making of the record. Watching, as Eddie Kramer isolates the original tracks, allowing us all to hear Jimi singing and playing "in the raw" is an awesome sight and sound to behold. I've watched this DVD over and over again, savoring every moment.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2021I've been a Hendrix fan heavily since 1971. Read the early books, bought a lot of bad bootlegs, etc. And back in the day we went to midnight shows to see Jimi Plays Berkley for example. When video came out it was like vaults were slowly being opened. Eddie Kramer, the man who mixed and spent massive time w/Jimi and tons of time posthumously putting together all the left over tape is sincere. What makes this great as well is there is EXTRA stuff. 50 years now so I don't expect much but there it is. Winwood, Finnigan, Cassidy, Dave Mason, that somehow did not get out or interviewed until this. Also some new photographs and bits from magazines or newspapers which are heartwarming to me You can't explain that time to anyone. All in all it was tied together so very well. 4 stars instead of 5? That's just a matter of opinion, really. All together a great documentary on the making of Jimi's Electric Ladyland.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2014I have loved this Jimi recording since I bought it the first day it was released, so long ago. THis is a really good look into the recording and story behind the album
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2012If you like "how they made it" stories and personal interviews with the folks who were there, this is it! Great video and music of a lost great!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2018Lots of fun for Hendrix fans
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2017If you are a true Hendrix fan then this DVD is a MUST have, plain and simple. The behind the scenes of the making of one of Rock music's EPIC albums is super interesting. Four and a half stars.
The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because for not much more cost they could have included the Electric Ladyland CD itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Für die Insel

1.0 out of 5 stars not the content. but vfm
If you haven't got Electric Ladyland (why not...?) and if you haven't got Classic Rock: The Making of Electric Ladyland then best value is the 40th edition CD/DVD
The DVD on the 40th is identical to this one
This DVD contains the same material as the Classic Rock DVD plus 18 minutes of material that adds little.
The rating is based on value for money and less than clear marketing, (I found out the hard way) the content is excellent.
