- jakethelake, on 08/05/2008, -82/+4Did anyone catch the new Hitchcock movie?
- Levarris, on 08/05/2008, -49/+6The Video was lagging a bit but from what I saw it seem pretty cool. Would like to try it out.
- saftaplan, on 08/06/2008, -1/+3It seems like the amount of bling-bling in these kind of 'concepts' are always inversely proportional to the usefulness of the concept. I expected something smarter from Mozilla, and something that has got something to do with a browser, not a desktop environment.
This is not a browser. This is a desktop environment, with applications connecting to the internet and better communicating with each other than they do now. I don't even think this can happen in a Windows world, where standards for communication of data are scarce and everyone wants to push their own.
The concept is kind of like pipes in the GNU/Linux world, but with a barely usable GUI. That makes me think of a certain quote.
"Those who do not understand Unix are doomed to reinvent it. Poorly."

- tylermenezes, on 08/05/2008, -45/+8Seems cool. It's probably just going to end up as a Firefox extension, but I'm okay with that.

- Blazer, on 08/06/2008, -6/+3Nor you complaining about me complaining about people posting first. I hope you got a tingle in your pink parts for stating the obvious, and for posting FIRST. Maybe I should get an RSS reader and pounce on articles so that I too can be a stud.

- eriksr, on 08/05/2008, -38/+2OK, slow as molsasses link aside, that was pretty swanky. Number one, make it so!
- DMXell, on 08/05/2008, -35/+7Looks great. I hope that this comes to fruition.

- ThePags, on 08/05/2008, -17/+194cool concept but seems impractical.
- jakethelake, on 08/05/2008, -27/+3Wouldn't that make it an uncool concept?
- ThePags, on 08/05/2008, -2/+34the bmw that can change it's shape is a cool concept but completely impractical.
- Tenoq, on 08/06/2008, -2/+17No more impractical than 90% of the desktops I see around. Icons EVERYWHERE. Yet people know where they are instinctively, and can find what they need.
What is really interesting is how many everyday OS features are supplanted by this browser simulation. 90% of home users would be doing little more on their PCs today than what was demonstrated in just that browser. OS-independent user interfaces seem a bit closer to reality... which is a good thing for Linux supporters, IMHO.- DefaultGen, on 08/06/2008, -1/+4"Our website was right on the tip of the penis!"
- freqk, on 08/06/2008, -1/+17Yeah, buried for needlessly complicating things I do with copy paste/IM already.
Then again, mabye I'm just tomorrow's arrogant old person.
"When I was young, we'd copy paste each other links in a separate application that we would use to text each other messages! None of this fancy-shmancy 3D crap!" - fudged71, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2(BMW Gina, if you are interested in looking it up, anybody. and yes, vagina jokes have already been made)

- jakethelake, on 08/05/2008, -18/+3I thought those mice died years ago...
- jlogelin, on 08/05/2008, -21/+5Cool, cool, cool. This type of interface will become much more relevant as surface and technologies advance.

- vemon388, on 08/05/2008, -6/+207The future is going to be a messy place.
- DMXell, on 08/05/2008, -8/+4I suspect that there will be a bit more refinement to make it cleaner before, if ever this web browser is released.
- aznpwnzor, on 08/05/2008, -7/+4firefox killer do i see? oh wait
- richardhenry, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Agreed. What the fudge is with the expanding blobs, that lack any sort of description as to what they do? What a pain in the ass that would be to learn.
- jeffhansen, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Yeah, but it's all animated and zooms into stuff - a real productivity booster
- m4ttGT, on 08/05/2008, -8/+83Very cool and interesting, however, it seems a bit complex for the average user right now. Also, you're going to need a lot of computer power and internet backbone to do that kind of browsing in the future (with all those browser windows open). But the way the windows are grouped into "fields" in 3D is awesome!
Overall, very cool concept. Dugg!- EtherGnat, on 08/06/2008, -1/+153D interfaces always look cool, then end up sucking in reality. Just because they've always been terrible in the past doesn't mean it will always be that way, but I'm very skeptical.
The use of depth to show age is kind of a cool concept--at least there was a purpose to the 3D which is more thanI can say for many interfaces.- gplpark92, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4For the most part, that's usually true, but I have seen some exceptions. Checkout the PicLens extension for firefox, i've found it brilliant for my touch screen laptop, and it is an organized, efficient 3-d way of managing photos
- EtherGnat, on 08/06/2008, -0/+6PicLens is cool, but I'm not sure I'd call it a 3D interface. I mean, I know it's rendered in 3D, but it's still more of a 2D interface wrapped in a pretty 3D shell. There's no real depth (in the dimensional sense) to the interface. There's nothing wrong with that; laying stuff out in rows and columns is very efficient.
As soon as you start adding depth you not only increase the complexity for navigation controls you also make it more difficult to scroll through things. Good interface design generally limits you to scrolling in one direction (or better no scrolling at all). Scrolling in two dimensions is a pain, and three is a nightmare.
I'm not sure we'll ever see a good 3D desktop interface, but I'd love to be proven wrong.
- Zanneth, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Computing power is not the problem at this point. Developers really need to focus on optimizing the hardware that we currently have (multi-cores, etc) on the software end. Then we'll really start to see some serious stuff.
- EtherGnat, on 08/06/2008, -1/+153D interfaces always look cool, then end up sucking in reality. Just because they've always been terrible in the past doesn't mean it will always be that way, but I'm very skeptical.
- spilk, on 08/05/2008, -15/+2This looks like it was pulled right off paleofuture.com.
Also, this is clearly a solution looking for a problem, which means it will never take hold. - JasonCox, on 08/05/2008, -19/+6If Kevin diggs it, they will come.

- danielsamuels, on 08/05/2008, -9/+79Didn't really appeal to me.
- r00fus, on 08/06/2008, -2/+1Yup, I thought the pie context menu was way too small, and the "sea of windows" was more like a glorified expose... if my Mac returned expose (or quicklook) results for a spotlight search, that'd be about the same.
- ewcost, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I agree.
- twistmac, on 08/05/2008, -13/+4It's cool, but It'll never catch on. Most people don't like change and that's a lot of change.
- synystar, on 08/05/2008, -2/+13I remember when I tried to get my users to use Firefox instead of IE. Among other things, I pointed out how great tabs were. One actually said "Why would I ever want to use that? I don't like Firefox. I'm sticking with Internet Explorer"
Then IE7 came out and after she upgraded, she found that she used tabs constantly and couldn't live without them today. People may not like change, but once they adopt something they often discover how useful it can be. These features will catch on...and people will use them.- zeabu, on 08/06/2008, -4/+4"she"... enough said..
Why try to come up with rational arguments? - ivand67, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Going from windows to tabs is a small change. Going from your regular browser to this Minority Report-type of spacial browser is another.

- Spooled, on 08/05/2008, -9/+0It is truly an amazing concept but thats just what it is.................a concept. It will be interesting to see how much of this makes it into the next FF or as a FF extension though.
- Andronicus, on 08/05/2008, -5/+50I only wanna know one thing: What amazingly fast and low latency internet service is she using out there in rural Farmington? (I need to get on that.)
- synystar, on 08/05/2008, -11/+2I support businesses in small rural towns up to 50 miles outside of the city I live in and most of them have some type of broadband service available.

- Rally603, on 08/05/2008, -2/+55I like my internets simple.
- BrendanSheehan, on 08/06/2008, -0/+3Once again the future is wrongly predicted.
- blurrie, on 08/05/2008, -9/+14i like in that cloud of book marks.. the south park internet going down episode is front and center.. looks like randy is actually about to beat off. heh.
- Jbone86, on 08/05/2008, -8/+28Even if this is an idea that will never stick, I don't know. I think it's cool that people are still creating concept videos like this; ones that just throw out scenarios for what technology in the future will be someday. During the 90s it was kind of a fad in movies and media to come up with ridiculous ideas of what would happen in the next 20 or 30 years. Even the fact that they used agriculture as an example of a subject/occupation effected by the future is kind of a throwback to when people were just brainstorming on what the next big thing is. I personally welcome these concept videos and hope for more stuff like this.
- ocellnuri, on 08/05/2008, -10/+11Combining Exposé and Time Machine-esque mechanisms for a new desktop is a really cool concept! I'm not sold on the top and side edges of the screen, but this is a nice visualization all around.
- cards, on 08/05/2008, -8/+2The only part of that future I'm looking forward to is the nearly-seamless monitor.
- tomzer1, on 08/05/2008, -7/+139Interesting video and concept. But WTF? Trash-talking between farmers? Ha! That took me out of the presentation.
- EtherGnat, on 08/06/2008, -1/+15You haven't spent much time around farmers, have you?
- ostracize, on 08/06/2008, -1/+3Farmers talking smack is the only thing I could think of too!
- mm3guy, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0In addition, I bet most farmers won't have an internet connection to take advantage of this service.
- jnbdz, on 08/05/2008, -9/+3I think that the idea is interesting because it shows a new way to interact with the content form the Web. Like many of you the first thing a though was this is messy how the hell could I ever get around this messy. But wen you really think about it even if they found a new way to order those objects like they cooed theme many people would still get lost. They show in the video a small search engine to get around the messy so even if it was ordered people would still need the search. Plus wan we are looking at the video we where look at some body else messy browser, its normal to get lost. Its like my bedroom its a messe but I am able to find my stuff I still wish I had a small search engine to find things that are harder to find but in general I get around, but if some one else comes there get lost. Plus people are messy in nature. Its like Windows in UI it gets very messy some times also.

That's exactly what we'll say to our grandchildren when we watch them using one of these damn things..- synystar, on 08/06/2008, -0/+23True...years ago I was training a somewhat elderly lady to use her new PC. After explaining, and demonstrating, how to use the mouse I turned it over to her. She started by picking it up and waving it at the monitor. Around the same time I had a roommate with a three year old daughter. I loaded some edutainment software on my PC and showed her ONE time all the cool things she could do with it. Three years old and when I gave her the seat she was at it as if she'd been doing it since she was born.

- Dustmuffins, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1I think the same 3d movement can be achieved with a regular mouse+scroll wheel, and you won't have to hold you hand up like that... looks tiring.

- rowjimmy, on 08/05/2008, -2/+16huh, lot of potential, but can you even imagine the developer hell it'll be to design sites that are compatible with aurora & ie6?
- ShaKtiMaaN, on 08/05/2008, -1/+37Video isn't laggy, I think it's just like that. I tried vimeo's HD vs. SD versions, both run at the same kind of...stop-motion like animation. The rendering of the browser is smooth though, so I'm thinking it's just a poor artistic direction, not a crappy link.
My thoughts, ehh, I don't see how this is useful to the average consumer, but this is just the first video (then again, she was watching South Park).
The cloud/cluster view is cool looking, and the whole Z-axis related to time is interesting, but if it linked more to how much you use things, like popularity/page views, rather than last-time accessed (I guess these are usually correlated, but I dunno). Searching looks easy, but the radial menu looks confusing as hell, the whole blind-menu is a bit of an issue for me.- anaesthetica, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2>Z-axis related to time is interesting

- stutimandal, on 08/06/2008, -10/+5Death to IE. Face the future kid of Firefox, Microsoft!
- trollick, on 08/06/2008, -0/+21Because damn computers made our lives way too simple. We desperately need this kind of tools to bring clutter and chaos back.
- Vorsuc, on 08/06/2008, -2/+8The clusters are a riot, 'now where is it' ... exactly, good luck finding anything in that mess or relying on the software to correctly identify 'related' information.
And beyond the accessories, what there could be considered 'conceptual', nearly all of it can be done and is being done today to a lesser extent. The animation and collaberation tools would have been swish 5 years ago, but it all looks so 'normal' now. Where's the innovation, the ideas, the creativity? - WestN, on 08/06/2008, -1/+4This would be perfect for me... right now I have just over a 50 pages open (just cleaned it) and a lots of bookmarks.
- fudged71, on 08/06/2008, -0/+3there was a time a few months back that I would keep about 150 tabs open permanently (scholarship pages, etc.), because I needed to "get back to it asap," which of course rarely happened. I would also have about 150 more that I would open in each session while browsing digg (among others) and just keep doing this over and over. I would always close the second 150 tabs before I exited, the would come back later to have to load 150 tabs to start what I would consider a "new session"
It was a hectic month or two. The reason was mainly procrastination. These days, I mainly just forget about my to-do's, which is so much more fun, and take no time to load ;) - juliandunbar11, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1jesus christ, 50 pages? 150 pages? - greevar, on 08/06/2008, -2/+2I liked the integration of collaborative communication into the browser and the browser sharing. It reminds me of remote desktop, but more useful. Other than that, the 3D navigation was all about eye candy and I know that 3D navigation is inefficient. A better solution would be a fast indexing system. Type in your search parameter, then get a list of possible matches with a thumbnail view and a short description of what it is. Oh wait, isn't that was delicious does? Well, to a point it does. The feature that transcribes data from one page to another is very format dependent. The data would have to be formatted exactly to match the page it's being transcribed to. Not only is that impractical, it's down right infeasible unless you're using data gleaned from the same site. Definitely a work in progress that needs more work.
- mrspurs16, on 08/06/2008, -1/+1Why does this remind me of Pixeljunk Eden?
