Obama Campaign Calls New Yorker Magazine Cover “Tasteless and Offensive”

Barack Obama had no response to the cover of the July 21st issue of The New Yorker Magazine, seen below, except to shrug incredulously and tell reporters, “I have no response to that.”

The cartoon features Barack and Michelle Obama celebrating with a fist bump in the Oval Office in front of a portrait of Osama bin Laden and an American flag burning in the fireplace. Mrs. Obama is portrayed as a militant radical, while Obama appears foreign. The image reflects, some might say mocks, the rumors that have plagued the couple over the last 18 months.

While the candidate declined comment, his campaign did not. “The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama’s right wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree,” spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement.

The magazine features a lengthy article on “how Chicago shaped Obama.”

OMG, you are kidding. This cover will become a smear email in itself. Obama must be shell shocked that the media has turned on him. By the way Jessie Jackson was right, Obama talks down to blacks, he talks down to women, he talks down to everybody.

Comment by John Lockwood

I wish that I could believe that people would look at this and see the insane satire it is meant to represent. But too many people are too easily led, like sheep, to see beyond the hate filled lies that certain media outlets perpetuate. It was here, on Fox, that the “terrorist fist bump” was coined. What kind of stupidity could link a tender moment between husband and wife, into something associated to the violence and hatred of terrorism? Oh yeah…Fox and Friends. And the sheep that watch and read this drivel, without looking at multiple points of view, will continue to see Obama and his family, just as the NY Magazine has presented them. The satire will be lost. The stupidity of those kinds of thoughts and comments, will continue. Because too many Americans choose to be told what to believe and think, instead of actually taking the time to learn on their own. Wake up America!! You do no one any favors, except those with agenda’s, when you shut down your learning processes, and let others do it for you.

As a lifetime subscriber to The New Yorker, I can’t fathom why the editors chose that mean-spirited image of Michele & Barack Obama. It’s slanderous and inflammatory. I’m disgusted.

Comment by Joe

Best cover page we have seen to date. It is what we will get if we put this man in the White House.

Comment by Peter

It’s directly addressing to FoxNews and their agenda, but I guess you have to have a certain IQ to understand this.

Comment by Mediocrates

Not many comments here, probably because Obama’s staff response summed it up nicely. You can find smears and “facts” about whatever you want to, whoever you want to. You have to be careful about which news sources you trust.

Comment by HillaryVoter

Only two things missing; Larry Craig on his knees and Obama’s crack pipe.

Comment by nick, houston

I am disappointed by the New Yorker. I am even more disappointed by the fact that Fox News has continually spread the rumor that Obama is either a Muslim, terrorist supporter and liberal.

Instead of vilianizing people, you should question their policies and personal and political decisions. NOT RUMORS meant to deter people from engaging in the political process through fear.

Comment by Sam Deakins

It may be tasteless and offensive… but the truth hurts. About time the Obimbo’s got some of the medicine that has been heaped on McCain.

Comment by Julie White

I cannot believe that you printed the Barak and Michelle cover. How tasteless. I will never buy your magazine again.

Keeping coming to the center Mr. Barak “Baby Jesus Messiah” Obama, and this is nothing compared to what the left will hand you. :)

Comment by Jerry Allsman

Is this the “New Yorker” Magazine?

I thought Clinton and Obama had just staged a unity fundraiser in New York, and it was reported that the two practically owned the place.

I guess there is more trouble in New York than meets the Mainstream Media eye.

Comment by the southern dem

I am surprised by this…for such a liberal magazine coming out with such a thing….if it was someone from the repub party they would have cried MAJOR FOUL! Holy smokes…from a liberal magazine…the same thing many of us have had concerns about for some time. Given all the weird things going on about the Obama campaign…double speak, total reversals and then clain…no I did not…when it was plainly simple to see the difference. Being an independent the baggage Obama has from so many things like this I am amazed he has gotten so far…someone must be sensing that Obama has not the true elctability and are looking to switch alliance to Clinton…remember there is still a convention and the more we find out about Obama things will not be pretty. And the recent Jackson issue and the black divide…whether real or contrived is something that also needs to be looked at. It is simply wonderous he has survived so long with such terrible association, terrible friends and extremely poor experience…thank god that the campaign is so long so we get to know what he represents other than being a far left liberal which is farther left than anyone has even been and be so close to the presidency. The trying to be in the middle has been noticeably uncomfortable for Obama and he gets flake from his left supporters. It will be interesting how this very likely true representation works out for Obama’s campaign and for his followers.

Comment by Paul

Whose point are you trying to prove? This was arrrogant and inconsiderate whatever your intentions. There is enough misinformation and lies going out without some magazine putting them all together seemingly to “paint a picture” for it’s readers to take a cue.

Comment by Brian in Oklahoma

Alright now a newspaper got it right!!! WTG. Go Big John

Comment by Pat Montandon

The New Yorker Magazine’s July cover of Barack Obama and Michelle Obama must be causing the McCain camp to not only fist bump but to roll on the floor with glee. In a shocking effort at cleverness you have reinforced the caustic rumors of those who would never vote for anyone of a different hue than they are, pink and white. Shame on you New Yorker!

Comment by Ashamed

This is truly sickening……to what levels of depravity does the media need to stoop to in order to make a point….a perverse one at that.I have lost so much respect for the American electoral process I am almost ashamed to be living here. When will this process be given the respect that it deserves and when will Americans get tired of “in the gutter” types of politics…in other words when are Americans going to grow up and show the world how this process for a president, the most powerful in the world, should really be conducted. This cover is puerile at best and debased at worst.Shame on the people at The New Yorker that thought this was a “grand idea”…I will never pick up one of their pieces of trash again as they don’t deserve any kind of respect for this. This is from a person that has no political affiliations….presently they are all worthy of the trash bin. This country needs a new kind of electoral process, the present kind stinks to high heaven in all it’s forms and covers such as this only highlight that fact…..

You’ve got a typo with, “Barack Obama had no response to the over of the July 21st issue of The New Yorker Magazine.” It should read: “Barack Obama had no response to the cover of the July 21st issue of The New Yorker Magazine.” Oh FOX News! You’re so cute!

I feel sorry for someone whose heart is so hateful to even think of making a cartoon like that. The good thing, we now know how protective Senator Obama and his wife Michelle are of their innocent children and will shield them all they can. Peace and love

WOW! It seems the left really doesn’t like Obambi! Obambi should tell his followers to vote for McCain –

Comment by Sara B.

Fox News is just loving this. It is satire, The New Yorker is making fun of knuckleheads, but the knuckleheads that believe this stuff don’t know what the word satire means. The cover was below the belt, reckless and irresponsible. I look forward to the lampoon of McCain, viagra, and Lieberman. I’m also canceling my subscription. Perhaps the Republicans into culture will keep them afloat. LOL.

Comment by KUDOS TO THE NEW YORKER

The illustration artist should get the “best illustration” of the year award. It’s biographical and a perfect characterization of what Obama has portrayed himself as.

KUDOS TO THE NEW YORKER MAGAZINE for having the chutzpah to recognize that free speech is what this country was built on and NOT be bullied into a retraction by a POTUS candidate’s campaign managers.

I’m buying 10 copies.

Shocking images. I am completely shocked and was almost sick to my stomach when I saw this caricature. The New Yorker must really hate Obama to print that picture. Obama is right; it is “tasteless,” and I am an undecided voter at this point.

Comment by Jean Gibran

As a lifelong New Yorker subscriber I’m shocked at this scandalous cover. It’s not humorous. It’s not satirical. It’s scandalous and libelous. Shame on the editors for allowing the trashing of a presidential candidate.

How disappointing to see a new low in the New Yorker. I won’t purchase it. I may not purchase another New Yorker…

What is funny is how many people on here say things like “This rings true.”

I have to laugh. The cover is mocking you. Yes you. And you don’t even realize it. You are foolish enough to believe the lies and then you can’t even recognize when someone is making fun of your foolishness.

Priceless. Seriously.

Comment by EyesWideOpen

This cover sends mixed messages, and I can tell by reading these comments. If the New Yorker’s intent was to show how negative the campaign against Barack Obama is, well then they should put those people on the cover. Barack is making history, and I still don’t know if this country is ready for a man like him. Too many people in this country are biased, for whatever reason, and believe everything they see and hear and ignore their own true thoughts. Get a life New Yorker…you knew exactly what you were doing.

This cover could have been published at any time during the primary campaign. Why now? We have 2 choices left, neither very good. Why was he “off limits” during the primary?

Comment by AJ

the New Yorker catches up with Fox news !

WHAT NEXT…………….

Comment by Wake up people

Wake up people, they have been showing this kind of stuff on both parties for many decades. They are just testing you and wanting to see your reactions. They are laughing at the masses right now, and that means “both” sides of the masses. The only difference between a dem and rep at that level is that they are spelled differently. Politics is a sham. When Bush and Kerry ran against each other we had two cousins that were bonesmen. Obama is Bush’s cousin and McCain is probably also. The american dream that anyone can become a Pres. is an illusion. Most or all the Pres. were related to each other and the British(actually German) Royal family. If you play their game you have to play by their rules. So we are still run by England today.

I’m pretty sure Karl Rove and the RNC were the guys who paid the New Yorker to make this cartoon.

Comment by James McDouglas

The Pro-Israel folks at the New Yorker better be careful. In this issue they criticize Obama for merely being at a convention with an academic who criticizes America for letting AIPAC have too much sway over our policies… a correct assertion in the minds of many Americans.

Pro-Israel folks who read and write for the New Yorker had better be careful just how racist they get, or America could turn it’s back on them… and who could blame us really, after their behavior?

How many times are we gonna get stabbed in the back by the Pro-Israel contingent before we say “enough is enough, you guys are on your own?”

Comment by James McDouglas

Pro-Israel ugliness.

The New Yorker had better be careful how racist they get… or Israel could find itself a very lonely sad little tyrant, surrounded by a whole lot of unhappy poor people.

Comment by Kim

I wonder what ever happened to the guy who was imprisoned for making a joke about a “burning bush” right after Bush was “elected” president. Do you think they might let him out of prison now?

Comment by Jim B

A very bad idea on the part of the New Yorker. I suspect that those of you who like it never buy it or read it and those of us who used to buy or read it don’t like it. Whatever you think of this it was a stupid move on the part of the magazine.

Comment by Kevin Burt

I will never buy or read another New Yorker magazine, this is the most racist portrayal of Sen. Obama and his wife to date. I am so glad I decided not to go to New York for a weekend get away. I would encourage a boycott of New York.

Comment by Hank

That cover is a perfect rejoinder to Obama’s arrogant and stupid “Presidential Seal”. He’s so arrogant he thinks he’s a god. So be it, but if it’s legal to lampoon Mohammed in the West, then I should think it’s legal to lampoon the second coming of Jesus too. New Yorker, don’t back down!

Comment by Michael Thau

This cover is not a big deal whatsoever to the politically intelligent as such individuals shape their political views by a mixture of first and second-hand information combined with significantly better informational sources such as Foreign Affairs, Current Events, Janes, the Journal of Intelligence and Counter Intelligence and so forth. Mass media, popular magazines are for those individuals governed by heuristics, affected by images and usually those who are partisan-based rather than issues-focused. Instead of reflexively blaming the enemy with endless negative blather, try being constructive by 1) better educating yourselves, and 2) fixing the system with more than non-constructive criticism, protests and indignation. If you ain’t fixing it then you’re part of the problem!

This is why from time to time I hate American culture. We all ended up here from some where in the world either by boat, plane or connected land mass. But some how the master races, Hebrews , Whites or Orientals or anyone other than native peoples and African based races outside of Africa, get in there heads that they can produce the most insensitive policies and messages in such opportune and historical moments as if in a vacuum of some sort and call it freedom or a Right. I guess if I depict Yitzhak Rabin in Nazi garb, or Pres. Washington in a compromised position with an American slave, or depict Hiroshima victims as 1930 American Chinese caricatures. It would be considered Free Press, Huh. Lets show Hitler or Ahmadinejad in the form of the crucified Jesus on the cross, savior of the world. Wanna read that article. Care to depict the Pope in some way on a cover of a mag of some sort. Can you say R Kelly. DISGUSTING, SHAMEFUL, LURID, SHAME…SHAME….SHAME. The bottom line is that the abuse, though so artfully rapped in the Bill of Rights and freedom demeans the people. The New Yorker is Garbage and if you disagree imagine your ideal or moment that means something to you personally or your rank and file displayed this way so contrary to reality and see if you can enjoy such blissful detachment from the moment, a moment, some great monumental moment that means a lot to others of greater number, need as to historical, personal and truly national importance. Oh yeah I would never intentionally depict the people, groups or organization mentioned above in such a shabby fashion. Just wanna make a point!!!!

It is now clear to me why I’d never even want to visit New York, let alone live there.

How could anyone see humor in that rag they call a magazine?

What kind of people could possibly publish such a thing about the future POTUS?

As an American military veteran, I am truly sicked, disgusted, and a little ashamed.

I’m amazed so many of you have missed the point of this cartoon. It’s not making fun of Obama or calling him a terrorist, it’s making fun of FOX news and all the idiots in the media who, due to racism, are making such ridiculous claims that Obama is a terrorist or his wife is a “baby mama,” etc. As an Obama supporter, I loved the humor is this illustrtion at first. But after coming to this website and seeing how wrongly it is being interpreted, it’s a pity the cartoon is so far over your heads.

So disgusting I want to spit. way to put in concrete, propagated nonsense. As if I started a rumor that mcCain was gay and then they put on the cover him naked with several men touching themselves. its so repulsive on so many levels. they have stooped to such a low and in the process fed the bottom feeders that will love it. Unbelievable.

It always amazes me at how little sense of humor my fellow “liberals” have. While they don’t mind posting (or at least never demanding such posts be removed) all kinds of hateful comments, wishing President Bush, Nancy Reagan, John McCain dead, or almost as bad, over on the Daily Kos and Huffington Post, so long as it is Republicans, tasteless comments and humor are acceptable.

This was satire, biting, but humorous, a tableau of Obama haters worst fears! Get it? Jeeze…….

Comment by Douglas in Oakland, CA

What a stupid cover for the magazine. Just immature. Is their editor some maladjusted teen?

It’s no accident that platforms and issues are not important to the masses. Almost no one who says they are for Obama can recite any policy platform associated with him. He will not “change” diddly squat. He is a puppet of the power brokers. his faithful mentor is Zbigniew Brzezinski who wants to menace Russia and China as much as Cheney & Rumsfeld wish to menace Iraq and Iran. And McCain is simply a bufoon.

Both McCain and Obama will be yes men for the elite. Not “for the People.” It only takes a little digging to realize this.

The only great candidate in this election with a great platform and a voting record of complete integrity was Ron Paul.

I will now vote for Chuck Baldwin or Bob Barr, as their platforms are closest to Paul’s.

This of course is not accurate. Michelle should have a Che shirt on. Otherwise it is spot on. Way to go New Yorker!

Anytime a defamatory statement is made about a public figure, the public salivates and goes into soap opera mode. However, when this kind of irresponsible paprazzi type of behavior enters the presidential race, we are at risk of the same kinds of public debacle and misdirection that allowed Bush to thrive for the last 8 years on lies, propaganda and war-mongering while secretly growing fat as the entire nation grows lean and is depleted.

Wake up, America!

If people don’t start to demand responsibility in politics, then it will never materialize. It should not matter who you support — if you are a civic minded American who supports the improvement of your country, you should be sickened at this low-minded and pandering attempt to cash in on hate by the New Yorker.

Speak up! Does this disgust you, then broadcast your reaction! Do you demand better, then let people know — do not send the image, but spread the message, We will not stand for an America reverting to hate speech and lies!

This is truly a tragic day in America’s history

That is your stimulus… the American public shows signs of poisoning, becoming lackluster and obese. Many thought it was only the officials who were targeted, but, it’s the other way around. The scum likes to see your life force drip from your body, drop by drop, to savor it’s sweetness, and prolong your suffering. That is all too obvious, but what they forget, is that when times really get bad, people band together and help one another. And when that happens, they lose power. Americans legally own their country, and every politician under its canopy. Amercian’s are losing their economic power exponentially by the day. It’s only a matter of time before the camel’s back craters. Treason has been committed against the Americans by its own government, a mortal sin of Atlantean flavor. Why argue over the inevitable? It’s time to do something about it.

With McCain, you know what you get. Is it great? No. But with Barack Hussein Obama, you kinda don’t have any clue. After all, action speak louder than words. So, what do we really know of Obama? Not much. Consider this: he was a Senator for 143 days before he decides he wants to be President. So, while 4.3 billion Earthlings know his name now, only about 17 or 18 had any clue who he was 19 months ago. This isn’t really even an exaggeration–that’s the scary part.

It is difficult for Liberals to understand that the door swings both ways. This type of coverage is perfectably acceptible if it is an attack on a Repulican. But, should it be against the Left’s Media darlings, it is an untenable attack, and from a the New Yorker, none the less!
Too many people have forgotten the Jimmy Carter years. It really needs to be emphasized that Mr. Obama’s first term would very much resemble Mr. Carter’s second term. Fortunately, Ronald Reagan won the Presidency in 1980. (He is now considered to be one of America’s greatest Presidents by informed consensus, including a recently televised program by AOL in which anyone could vote for the Top 100 Greatest Americans)

Mr. Obama is only now discovering that the General Election is a different process. He needs to debate, as Mr. McCain as requested, in multiple town hall meetings. In this forum, there will be no room to cover the fact that he is out of touch with the voter. This Magazine cover is only the beginning of harsh criticism. After all, none of us would eat a Twinky for it’s nutritional content.

Mr. Obama is an excellent speaker. But, we have now entered the General Campaign. If you continue to avoid the tough debates, you cannot be President. As a Small Business Owner, I have built practices from nothing, created jobs for hundreds. Tax increases on all of us rich people will mean job losses out of economic necessity. Economic Redistribution that effects people like myself amounts to Socialism (See Canada). If Liberals are bent because of this cover, let their man debate the issues with Mr. McCain and prove himself. How could this be objectionable? Tell me how I’m wrong.

Ok, how about New Yorker Magazine coming out with a cover showing the WTC twin towers collapsing and two CIA agents watching and saying “Mission Accomplished”? Surely the satire in that would obvious, no?

You will not see that cover, of course, because liberal or conservative, our Jewish brethren are petrified of Obama and what a great threat to Israel and our Pentagon it will to have his presidency cause peace to break out across the world! Simply cannot have that.
