- t4ll3y, on 07/24/2008, -1/+12Yeah. What kind of loser plays a video game to have fun?
- tacochampion, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3Yeah, video games are for losers. Nobody with a life plays video games. Look at all these stupid nerd losers having fun. STOP HAVING SO MUCH FUN, don't you know you don't have a life and suck and are a loser? You all better stop enjoying yourselves RIGHT NOW.
- Keffmaster, on 07/24/2008, -64/+52This proves that you dont have to be good at real instruments to play rock band.
- Ollee64, on 07/24/2008, -4/+36All it proves is even if you have actual talent, doesn't mean you are going to be good at the game.
You can still suck at real life and suck at Rock Band... - galeninjapan, on 07/24/2008, -3/+114Dude, Rush is amazing.
- Spuy767, on 07/24/2008, -1/+99I think they got a bad score because Neil needed another six of those drum sets to truly feel in his element.
- galeninjapan, on 07/24/2008, -1/+13Exactly throw in another 30 pieces and he would feel at home.
- Godlike, on 07/24/2008, -0/+10THE DRUM SOLO OF LIFE!
- jzuska, on 07/24/2008, -37/+2no, no they aren't.

You have no place here - Keffmaster, on 07/24/2008, -1/+11Rush is the greatest band in the world no argument
- Herolint, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3I think the biggest problem is when you play a song on any instrument long enough it becomes second nature. Then, when you hand a great drummer or guitarist a fake instrument and ask them to play their song differently, you can hardly expect them to overcome years of ingrained playing in one sitting.
- BabyWookie, on 07/24/2008, -6/+1It's just too bad that they are a bunch of right-wing fascists.
- djbon2112, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1@Herolint. So true. The first time I played YYZ in GH2 I failed miserably (even though I could play most other songs on Expert at the time) because I have the way I play it on guitar so ingrained in my head (and it's not the way the notes in the GH version are). For the musicians who wrote and probably play the song almost daily, even a couple notes different can throw you off.
- galvo, on 07/24/2008, -13/+13Playing instruments helps though, there's no doubt about that.
- andypop481, on 07/24/2008, -1/+51actually, guitar hero 3 did an interview with slash, who said knowing how to play a guitar actually made it harder to play guitar hero
- thefandango, on 07/24/2008, -0/+28my roommate had the same issue. My untrained ass was stomping him around, and he's a classically trained guitarist.
- Coffeedemon, on 07/24/2008, -2/+12I found it to be the other way around. GH and RB really helped my flexibility and finger strength (especially pinky) for playing real guitar but thinking about the real song when playing the games throws me off a bit.
- galvo, on 07/24/2008, -11/+3Slash doesn't speak for me, or any other guitarist. I know why Slash said that -- becuase playing the real guitar makes you want to play the "real" note chart. Imagine playing the expert note chart while you're really playing on medium.. you'd just fail from hitting too many notes. This is what happened to me when I first tried Guitar Hero.
You have to remember: it's a game. You have to learn the controller. Playing the guitar in real life definitely helps with rhythm, picking/alternate picking, and your fingers should already be comfortable with quick actions and far stretches. - NTolerance, on 07/24/2008, -4/+10Slash is right. For me the single biggest issue with Guitar Hero is that you can't pre-fret notes. I did this as second nature while playing real guitar but it gets you booed off stage in Guitar Hero. I can't un-learn that.
- demesisx, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1Yeah. I can play almost every one of the songs on Guitar Hero on real guitar and I can't even pull off easy stuff on that game. The singing should be easy and so should the drums (because they're actually close to the real thing) but the part that needs TONS of work is the guitar controller. Why not equip an actual guitar with MIDI pickups and use it for super expert mode? They'd have my money in a second if they did that. As it is now, I don't even play the game when there's nothing else to do at someone's house.
- efitz11, on 07/24/2008, -4/+9what do you mean you can't pre fret notes, you can too, nothing is hit until you strum
- merreborn, on 07/24/2008, -3/+6"For me the single biggest issue with Guitar Hero is that you can't pre-fret notes"
...yes you can. In GH1-3 and rockband. Try playing the game for more than 5 minutes. You'll probably pick it up pretty quick. - itzac, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5You can't pre-fret "higher" notes, only "lower" notes. It sorta makes sense if you think of it as having only one string... that somehow plays chords. And you definitely can't pre-fret from one chord to another.
- feoren, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Playing piano helps more with guitar hero than playing guitar does.
- MasterTroll, on 07/24/2008, -0/+21That's a joke, right? They are great musicians.
- Keffmaster, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4yes it was a joke they are amazing
- jzuska, on 07/24/2008, -31/+2I hate rush. I'm glad they failed.
Every 2 fer Tuesday station in the U.S. plays their BS.- Herolint, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5I hate listening to Jimmy Hendrix, but I readily admit that he was a talented guitarist. Are you too shallow to recognize Rush's virtuosity; even if you don't like that style of music?
- swampfoot, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5Posted on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btcvSWoQWV0- jasepower, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3Don't know why you're getting dugg down swampfoot, those of us not in the US can't view the video from Comedy Central. Thanks for the Youtube link!
- otros, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I'm not in the US and can watch it. Can I assume you're in Canada?
- djbon2112, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1It's a browser issue. FF3 and IE7 can't view it.
- Herolint, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6I think Guitar Hero and Rock Band, while completely different than playing real instruments, do teach you rhythm and dexterity though. I think they are good games for that reason.
- cyberprunes, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1no *****.
- tacochampion, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1It's a good thing it proves this, I know it's been a real point of contention for a long time, what with rock band and guitar hero being video games and in no way ever claiming or pretending to be 'the real thing'.
Have you ever, in your entire life, heard anyone say anything to the effect of "I'm awesome at guitar hero, so I am also awesome at the guitar."? I don't think you have, and it just goes to show that the gamers aren't delusional, it's you. - sarixe, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1you got it backwards:
This proves you can't play rock band if you're good at playing real instruments. - Keffmaster, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1only one person understood that it was a joke thanks Master Troll
- Ollee64, on 07/24/2008, -4/+36All it proves is even if you have actual talent, doesn't mean you are going to be good at the game.
- bobman2007, on 07/24/2008, -7/+142They probably only got 31% due to the guitar failing. Playing drums or vocals is almost the same in real life, but playing guitar or bass is not quite the same, of course.
- fadetoone, on 07/24/2008, -14/+3I bet they failed on vocals. Everyone fails on vocals.
- therightclique, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1But if you listen to how he was singing compared to the original recording, or the cover his performances has drifted a long way. He's obviously a talented dude, but he either isn't capable of singing like that any more or his style has just changed that much.
- BestJaxx, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1You're completely right, the microphone just doesn't work like it is supposed to, but on the screen, you could see that it was the guitar that failed.
- minorthreat, on 07/24/2008, -0/+9well in real life.. most bands when playing aren't trying to mimic another song either..
just saying...- TheKeithD, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6Cover bands?
- raitchison, on 07/24/2008, -0/+35That song in Rock Band is a cover, so he had to imitate someone who was imitating him
- PabloIV, on 07/24/2008, -2/+3I do pretty good on vocals
- therightclique, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4I do pretty well on the melodic songs. There are way too many non-melodic vocal parts in Rock Band. There are a lot of non-singlerly songs
- Abomonog, on 07/24/2008, -0/+27Not quite the same is an understatement.
- gsnedders, on 07/24/2008, -0/+7Drums are different, when it's Rush. Neil's used to having drums all around him. I hope Geddy could cope with the vocals, though. :P
- vat0r, on 07/24/2008, -5/+16You obviously don't play drums.
- bobman2007, on 07/24/2008, -3/+9I do play drums, and the main differences between drums on Rock Band and real drums is the way it's set up. Even though Rock Band has one pedal solely for bass drum and no physical cymbals, the rhythm that has to be kept is essentially the same with Rock Band and real drums. It's just that cymbals and drums other than snare interchange on three of the Rock Band drum heads, whereas one of the Rock Band drum heads is always snare.
- xSDMx, on 07/24/2008, -3/+6Uhm, drumming has a lot more technique than simply "keeping rythmn", that's the core component of the Drums, but not all there is to it. Can I emulate sticking patterns on rockband?
- itzac, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3It also doesn't matter how hard or soft you hit the drum in Rockband. But as a tool for starting to learn the drums, I think it's pretty kick-ass. My cousin teaches drums and he told me that any student who can play rockband well is probably 6 months to a year ahead of someone starting from scratch.
- xSDMx, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1Considering how much fluff the first couple of months of drum lessons are, I believe that. My friend who was interested in the drums had to practice ***** on a pad for two months before getting on a kit. The best way to learn is to sit down and play along to your favorite song, and if you can't, learn the techniques required, we have youtube now.
- BestJaxx, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2He was going from at least a 50 piece set to 5, that it is a serious change.
- speleo, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3You can see that they failed because of the drums. He tried to adjust the position of the drums during the song and failed. He's a great drummer also.
- einrobstein, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5"He's a great drummer also."

Rock Band and Guitar Hero Suck.
Geddy Lee looks like Ichabod Crane.
Bury me if you must.- josh42042, on 07/24/2008, -1/+46i must!
- BoboTheHobo, on 07/24/2008, -8/+36Buried because Rush owns, Rock Band is okay, Guitar Hero owns, and Geddy looks more like a lizard.
- tubbychick3n, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1he's right. just look at this photo evidence of a lizard that just goes to show how much some lizards look like geddy: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c176/tubbychick3 ...
- Jefftrick, on 07/24/2008, -0/+19You have your opinions and that's great, but I must indeed.
- alapoet, on 07/24/2008, -2/+22I definitely must.
Rush rules forever.
Rock Band and Guitar Hero are irrelevant.

- Beowulf2112, on 07/24/2008, -0/+27Im sorry are you calling Alex Lifeson a 'three chord folkie'? You have obviously never listened to any Rush song
- Equinox1, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6You're an idiot.
- dasdef, on 07/24/2008, -1/+12what a moran!
- SleepyMcShuteye, on 07/24/2008, -10/+0@dasdef: it's "moron", you moran!
- Zachari, on 07/24/2008, -0/+7I think I can speak for all guitarists without a god complex when I say: Anyone can play a guitar in real life just like anyone can play Rock Band. It's all about practice. You have to practice both to get good. I do both, and somehow, I'm still alive and have friends. Who'd have thought?
- Danby123, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5I'm a guitarist, and you sure don't speak for me.
- ADHD, on 07/25/2008, -4/+1So I'm the only one who gets pissed off when someone screams "I can play that on guitar hero" when a song comes on the radio, or says that guitar must not be that hard since GH is just like playing an instrument

- tidu, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4nah he was on Hard at the most, if it was expert you'd hear twice the amount of annoucing taps on the drums the entire song. but it takes a little getting used to.
and you guys act as if "boo he sucks at rock band drums" is a bad thing. - gn0stik, on 07/24/2008, -4/+17Niel Peart failed them out. Wow. Just goes to show that Rockband drums can teach you rhythm, but it's nothing like the real thing.
- chadisawesome, on 07/24/2008, -3/+17or it goes to show he was playing on medium in the game but hitting the drums as if he were playing expert. probably would have done better on a harder difficulty. My drummer friends can't play on medium or hard, they add too many notes as they are too used to playing a real kit.
- pilot3033, on 07/24/2008, -2/+11I think they said they were all on expert.
As a drummer, the RB kit works for basics, but if you're used to playing on more than just a basic kit (I have 12pcs in mine), it can start to feel limiting because you only have the 4 pads and a bass. Not to mention, playing in real life requires improvisation while playing RB requires you stick to exactly what you see. - pilotlicense, on 07/24/2008, -3/+3They were playing on what sounded like Medium.
- chadisawesome, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6they showed the screen... it was definitely not expert.
- gn0stik, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5SOUNDED like medium?
- otros, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1@gn0stik
yeah the drum kit loud. - MechaFalcon, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1@pilot
Not exactly, that's what the fill sections are for.
- pilot3033, on 07/24/2008, -2/+11I think they said they were all on expert.
- johneyoung, on 07/24/2008, -7/+1Maybe he's just not good enough?
- neotrantor, on 07/24/2008, -8/+3the rock band drum pads are legitimate midi instruments
- skipdog172, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Who came up with this whole "anybody who plays rockband/gh thinks they have immense talent and can play the real thing" concept? Whoever that person is....they need to die.
I have yet to meet any rockband/gh player who thinks these games are "just like the real thing". Besides, nobody ***** cares if you can play REAL drums or a REAL guitar, just like nobody cares if we can play our plastic instruments. It is a goddamn game that is played to have fun, NOTHING MORE! I even hear this ***** on ***** radio and tv...hosts making fun of rockband/gh players....gah it is so pointless. - tacochampion, on 07/24/2008, -0/+0He actually did pretty well but he tried to adjust his drums and it failed him out. If you notice, they were set as low as possible, they were at knee level. I don't know anyone who could play with them like that.
- roomforpanic, on 07/24/2008, -4/+187Neil Peart is one of the greatest drummers of all time.
- CrazedLeper, on 07/24/2008, -1/+7Hard to disagree but when I saw the Big Bopper play, it reminded me a lot of the solo to YYZ on Exit: Stage Left.
- xEn1gma, on 07/24/2008, -11/+10Please watch Mike Portnoy of DreamTheater.
Amazing.- Clark3934, on 07/24/2008, -2/+49"When I was about twelve, I decided I wanted to be the next Neil Peart."
-Mike Portnoy
I rest my case. - onlyclave, on 07/24/2008, -12/+3Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree is better than Portnoy.
Mike Portnoy hasn't done anything great since "Awake" - Purin, on 07/24/2008, -9/+2Portnoy's overrated.
Listen to drummers like Tony Royster, Thomas Pridgen, Kai Hahto, or Derek Roddy if you want good drummers. - JoeDiggsIt, on 07/24/2008, -4/+2Where is Billy "No Meter" Cobham in all of this? Have you heard "Stratus"?
- ldkronos, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1LOL. Have you actually listened to any albums after Awake? If you are looking for raw craziness behind the set, there has been plenty of that on nearly ever record since. As far as compositional playing, I think Scenes from a Memory takes the cake (brilliantly written drum part front to back). "These Walls" is also a bit of a technical masterpiece when you listen to his cymbalwork.
- Clark3934, on 07/24/2008, -2/+49"When I was about twelve, I decided I wanted to be the next Neil Peart."
- T8erT0T, on 07/24/2008, -0/+12Neil Peart is a beast, maybe not in Rockband, but in life--yes.
- EVogel, on 07/24/2008, -0/+9Chester agrees

- sarixe, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1a bag? how about a truckload?
- Jones82, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Is that you Maddox?
- thescimitar, on 07/24/2008, -1/+7No question that Peart is ridiculously skilled. However, I think you could make a reasonable argument for Buddy Rich for the top spot.
- mbrindam, on 07/24/2008, -0/+7Neil Peart would make that argument for you... There's a reason he spearheaded the Buddy Rich Tribute Concerts & CDs.
- jankind, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4Buddy Rich is the only reason I say Neil Peart is the best "Rock" drummer of all time. And not the best drummer.
- PorchSong, on 07/24/2008, -7/+3uhhhh are we forgetting John Bonham here? I know the argument, either Neil is the best or John, but I tend to fall into the Bohman camp and think they both equally are the best--just different styles. You want a taste of Bonham skills, go find the song Moby Dick--that is some mad, mad skills.
- ksgant, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2I like them all. Peart, Rich, Bonham. We can all learn something from them all.
I enjoy Bonham because for one he didn't surround himself with a ton of different drums. He had a very basic set and stayed with that set-up through his entire career. I still would love a set of amber Ludwig Vistalites.

- IphtashuFitz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8Agreed. About the only emotion I've seen from drummers is Keith Moon trashing his kit. Most other drummers don't have any spare energy to expend on wasted emotions - they need it all for the drums.

- dafragsta, on 07/24/2008, -2/+106I hate when wannabe musicians rail on people just having a good time playing a music game like Rock Band or Guitar Hero. I've had a guitar in my hand in some form since I was a small child and I never once thought that these games were an assault on real musicians or that it was cool to tell people that they should learn a real instrument. That's ***** self inflating fake pride talking.
I LOVE Rock Band and Guitar Hero. First and foremost, it's fun and a more interactive way to enjoy your favorite songs. Most musicians don't really learn to cover every single song they like and I'd honestly say a lot of what you learn in that game does translate very well into real playing. Maybe not the note fretting, but certainly alternate picking, hammer-ons/pull-offs, timing, playing through your mistakes instead of stopping, and *****, it's good for emboldening the rock star inside you that you want to come out.
If none of this were true, I seriously doubt real musicians like Rush, Slash, Trent Reznor, etc. would actually play these games.- shadowspawn, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Y'know, I had the same thoughts about the game teaching people to keep playing through your mistakes. Quite a bit of people give up or can't get back into step.
At least that was my thought. But you're the first person who brought that up... recovery is kinda key, and you are never truly "perfect" at anything.
It's kinda a good way to learn regimented playing, to the point where only you hear your mistakes and you turn them into something called "personal style".- dafragsta, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1For me, playing through was always the hardest part for me. I had gotten over it to some degree before GH, but it has definitely helped me play through and keep timing on faster stuff for sure.
- neotrantor, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3i play sax and i've noticed that the button on the guitar feel just like the upper keys on an alto sax... the dexterity i have from playing defiantly helps rockin out with GH
- cJw314, on 07/24/2008, -14/+1"real musicians like Rush, Slash, Trent Reznor, etc..."
1 out of 3 isn't bad... I guess.- DJMattB241, on 07/24/2008, -0/+0can you feel the pretentiousness seeping through your monitor?
- fwuzzle, on 07/24/2008, -11/+0Rush, Slash, Trent Reznor.....wait what? I'm sorry, don't equate some guy on a synthesizer to amazing musicians who truly are legends. No one will known who Trent Reznor is in ten years.
/uninformed elitist.- tdogg241, on 07/24/2008, -1/+7Yet, here we are, 14 years after The Downward Spiral's release and people still know who Trent Reznor is, so your argument already has a gaping hole the size of your mom's vag.
- MarkCiccone, on 07/24/2008, -4/+2My only 'problem' with Rockband or Guitar Hero is that people who spend hours every day playing it could be spending that time to learn a real instrument, instead of pretending to. I love both of the games and do play them on occasion, I just like jamming with my friends a lot more than a simulation. Part of the fun of covering songs is that you put your own touch to them, playing Rockband or Guitar Hero doesn't allow you to do that.
That being said, you list Slash and Trent Reznor as examples of 'real musicians'? There must be literally thousands of artists more talented than these guys, come on...- wsuBobby, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Why do you have a problem with someone else, most of whom you don't know and never will, spending their time on something they like to do? How and the hell does that affect you in any way to where you should be concerned?
So people who spend their time and enjoy cooking - should be farmers; Who spend time watching t.v. - should be directors; Who spend time on the internet digging - should be web developers. - joechapada, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2They ARE real musicians, even if you don't appreciate their music, they still have legions of fans, fans of the music they COMPOSED, unlike thousands upon thousands of guitar players on youtube covering extremely difficult songs.
Who's more "talented", youtube guitar players or slash and trent?
P.S.: I don't even like them to make this comment, in fact, I don't like NIN at all.
you should give this a read:
http://thebestguitarsiteintheworld.blogspot.com/20 ... - dafragsta, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1It has always made me laugh when I see someone doing a note perfect cover of a song on YouTube. It definitely requires tremendous dedication to learn how to do that, but honestly, the original artist probably exerted a quarter of the effort to write and record that song than the person playing the cover, even if they are on an even skill level. The original artist pays no attention to a perfect studio recording performance so much as the feeling of the song.
- wsuBobby, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Why do you have a problem with someone else, most of whom you don't know and never will, spending their time on something they like to do? How and the hell does that affect you in any way to where you should be concerned?

- tnoy, on 07/25/2008, -0/+6Metallica would probably sue themselves for playing a digital version of their song.
- GrubFisher, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Geddy Lee did pretty well!
- therealfoz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+22Can't see it 'cause I'm in Canada.. but I'll digg anything about Rush.

- WillOgles, on 07/24/2008, -4/+53Perhaps Alex should try pressing X-A-A instead of Y-Y-Z.
