A truly British Layout, constructed in France
Continuation of BUXTON in France
To all of you who have commented on my layout, Many Thanks. All comments are welcome.
To Malton Seadog; Thanks, comments mean a lot to an ancient SEADOG, 10 years with BP Tankers, and a true engineer. Give us the bits and we will make it work. No bits !, OK we will make them ourselves.
Yes I have used lichen as you have noticed, before the availability of more modern substances. However it is well mixed now with Woodland scenics stuff. Must admit it looks good to the eyes. Cameras are too searching, especially digital ones.
To BeerandPipes; A man after my own heart by the sounds of it. All the points are motorised and controlled by the touch contact system. 99 contacts for all the system. Will show a photo of the panel later. The layout started in Penyffordd near Chester, until I moved here in 1999.
To Zunnan; You are absolutely correct about the track layout of GOWHOLE, however due to space limitations, it is impossible to represent the actual situation. Note the line climbing to the right of the photo, in some way can be imagined as simulating the express lines. It is in fact a single line round the curve at the bottom, reverting to a double track after the Briggs Sidings signal box
It should be remembered by all railway modellers, that it is impossible, within both space and budget limitations, to reflect realism. We can however either create a layout that is totally PLAYABLE, but does not represent anywhere in reality, or alternatively, like myself, after many years of railway modelling (Meccano clockwork motor and strip track, yuck!) one tries to represent history or reality as closely as possible. The lack of the track design mentioned at Gowhole, was adjusted in order to allow the inclusion of a reversing loop, thus allowing out and back running into both the Buxton Stations, without manual intervention!. More to follow. I intended to include Shirt's Bridge, but it has nowhere to go. Would look a bit silly, perhaps.
Here we are, a few more images. There are many more for later.
Buxton LMS Coaling Plant
Buxton LNWR Station Front with Paxton Window
Gowhole Yard with plenty of freight.
Buxton No1 Signal Box, home made totally, including interior.
West Entrance to DISLEY tunnel. Position on layout totally modellers license.
9F with ICI Hoppers on the Cromford viaduct, over the Midland line to Millers Dale
The 9F again from the same level, note the Spiders attempts to install telegraph wires
That 9F again, Minitrix masterpiece, and still running beautifully.
Buxton Station Box, Midland at station throat.
Jubilee with rake of 8 Stanier coaches (New Graham Farish)
Ashwood Dale tunnel, 186yds.
Best regards to all for now.

Many thanks - I've merged the 2 topics BTW to make it easier for people to see all the pictures.

Superb David , and welcome to the forum.
I like the train shed at Buxton station , the end wall was a structure I was always impressed with !!
Whereabouts in France are you ?
Regards
Ron

Dear Raider,
Many thanks for the merge. I don't think I know how to do it myself.
Is it possible?
I will be posting the Track Plans later this evening and will head them as "Further Continuation of Buxton"

Just reply to this thread and add your new images in much like you do with a regular reply.
The forum will bump it up to the top of the board so we all know it's been updated.

Hi guys, here again.
This time I am sending the track plans, hope it helps in a better understanding of where each photo applies to.
3D Plan of final layout. The track and as seen, a lot of the scenery etc is complete, but all the left hand side is yet to be completed
This is the track plan. Excuse the clarity, but I had a little difficulty converting my CAD image to jpeg.
Bye for now, enjoy yourselves

Incredible.
Apologies if I've missed it, but what's the total size of the layout?

Reply to southernboy,
This photo shows the main control panel, and the touch control Point controls are mounted behind it.

To Malton Seadog,
It was mentioned on my first post, but if you look at the 3D plan, the length at the back is room width of 4.25 metres.
The Gowhole leg is 3 metres from the back and is 70 cm wide.
The Station leg is 3.4 metres from the back and is 80 cm wide.
The Motive Power Depot leg is 3 metres from the back and is 65 cm wide.
Hope this helps.
Happy surfing

Re: A truly British Layout, constructed in France
Thanks, it looks very well laid out, more concise than I'd imagined - must be down to good planning on someone's part The array of point controls is particularly impressive.DavidM wrote:Reply to southernboy ... This photo shows the main control panel ....
Your trackplan is also quite impressive - how long did it take you to develop ? Like was it something you just sat down and worked on over a few weeks or months - or was it something you'd been dreaming of for years and finally you found the space to do it ? (I hope that question makes sense )
EDIT: I forgot to say - your 3d effect backdrop is demonstrated much better in that last picture you posted
Re: A truly British Layout, constructed in France
Seeing how 'Gowhole' fits in with the rest of the track and potential operations, the deviation in track plan makes a lot more sense. Every time I've thought of a plan that includes Gowhole, it invariably becomes the centerpiece regardles of what else is included elsewhere, and I think that would make the rest of a layout suffer a little, operationally. Perhaps if I ever find myself with a spare 20 foot space, I'll actually build a representation of the prototype as it would make a fantastic scenic fiddle yard, and would be a great excuse to build a couple of garretts
To think that your layout in this guise has only been under construction since 2006 is staggering! It conveys the feel for this part of Derbyshire extremely well.
