Soooo, I got a restaurant.com since my husband had kept talking about how they have chicken fried bacon. He liked the bacon, it was not my fave. I did enjy the deep fried pickles with the cucumber dipping sauce. My cheeseburger was good - I like the egg bun it was on
But I started this review several years ago and never finished it. Until now. And my current review is, this place has closed....Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Britt C.Washington, DC317393132Feb 19, 2015
666 Burger! Holy moley. It's insane. You can only get it on Friday the 13th so it's something to look forward to.
6 pieces of cheese
6 mozzarella sticks
6 pieces of bacon
All on a burger with 2 beef patties, plus it comes with fries. All for the price of - you guessed it, $13. I don't know how they do this, it's a total steal. You gotta go try this thing. Plus they do tons of other good stuff but this is what got me back in.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Oct 1, 2015
I came to this place for the sole reason of trying the country fried bacon. It is indeed delicious, and I haven't seen any other food place around here selling it. Bacon by itself is already an exquisite, heavenly culinary experience. When you combine that with being breaded and deep-fried, I don't know how I could pass that up. I would hesitate to try it again, however, because one order of it is $8, and you don't get that much. A lot of the food here doesn't look like much, but is actually super filling because it's so greasy your eyes will pop out.
The location itself is poorly kept, and the kitchen doesn't even have lights in it. The cashier was friendly, though. Strangely, the store closed at 6:30pm when I visited, which seemed like a strangely inconvenient time to close a restaurant.
In summary, come here to try the country-fried bacon. Anything on the menu will fill you up because of the amount of grease.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 5, 2010Updated review
I'm not sure whether they've improved dramatically or I just had a bug up my ass the last time. After a week of unintentional semi-starvation, I was in the mood for a big meal of unhealthy food, and I'm glad that I gave this joint another shot. The place looks a lot cleaner, and the food was great. The two-dippin'-dog combo meal is now $7.75 but that's still a great deal, as the two dogs and huge pile of fries is really enough to feed two moderately appetited people. I was actually about to order some items separately when the proprietor directed me to the combo meal--saved me about three bucks and kept me from committing to THREE dippin' dogs. I wasn't expecting them to be so large, and, even as hungry as I was, three would have been way too much.
I liked both the fries and the dogs A LOT more this time, especially the fries--some of the best that I've had in recent memory. The double frying is a marvel. I got the curry ketchup again (still excellent; I actually brought home the leftover) and tried the spicy mustard (so-so, and partially frozen to boot). I should have read my review and recollected that I wanted to try the honey mustard. Next time!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0Sep 15, 2008Previous reviewOkay, I was informed that the corn dogs are called "Dippin' Dogs" so I came back in here to give them a shot. They have a great-value combo meal for $6 which gives you two dogs and a huge pile of fries plus a 16-oz drink. Dipping sauces are extra for 50 cents each. I got curry ketchup and Argentian herb and garlic, and they were both very good. The fries are a good medium-cut, skin-on variety. The dogs were not that great, though. I found the batter a bit too sweet and kind of grainy, while the wieners inside were nothing special.
I'd consider returning for another dippin' dog and the honey mustard sauce, but otherwise I'll stick with regular dogs and/or burgers here.
One other note--when the guy was filling my drink, he kept filling, waiting for the carbonation to settle, filling, waiting, filling, etc, as the level approached the very top. Click, spurt. Click, spurt, click, spurt, click, click, click. Most places would shoot the soda down in there and slap the lid on. This guy actually wanted to give the customer his full money's worth, so kudos to him.Jul 15, 2008Previous reviewIt's just a hot dog shack. Sure, it's the only one in the neighborhood, but still...I'm not sure why the rave reviews. I was in here today and corn dogs were not on the menu. The dipping sauces are a good effort. I haven't had any, but at least they are trying something different.
If I were in the area and wanted a hog dog, sure, I would come in. Otherwise, why bother. - Jessica Y.Seattle, WA83364439Mar 28, 2014
I took my parents here for a casual lunch (had a $10 Restaurant.com certificate). When we walked up the the restaurant, it was so dark inside, we thought it was closed! We almost walked away but luckily I peered inside and saw some people sitting around. HA!
We looked over the menu, and settled on 2 dippin' dogs, a fried chili cheeseburger (comes with fries), fried pickles, and 3 pop cans.
The. Food. Was. Amazing.
Hit. The. Spot.
So. Greasy. So. Good.
Everything was made to order, even the fries. We all raved about the dippin' dogs. The batter was so yummy and crispy, and the hot dog was piping hot. The chili burger was also good - they made a patty out of the chili and deep fry that separately. I didn't get a strong chili taste, which I was a bit disappointed about. I really liked that fried jalapeno slices on top, and the bun was very good. The french fries were almost a show stealer - they were greasy and wonderful. And the fried pickles were perfect - thin slices with a light batter (I'm not a fan of thick slices or pickle spears - the pickle/batter proportion is off). I'm also a fan of establishments that provide RC Cola!! (Kind of like Buffalo Joe's down the road in Evanston).
Yeah, the place is dirty. Yeah, the place is cold. But this ain't no fine dining place. When the food is this greasy and this good, it really doesn't matter.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Pinaki S.New York, NY34238428Oct 29, 2008
Filthy restaurant? Seriously, this is barely a dive. Not every restaurant looks like Chipotle. Comparable to Hot Dougs in cleanliness.
I got the Falafel burger, dippin dogs (which comes with a TON of fries.. seriously, the combo is not required). The fries are awesome, the dog was good (though it really wasn't too much tastier than a Carnival corn dog), and the crowd.... was what you wouldn't expect in Evanston. Diverse, interesting characters. Great place to people watch.
It's -1 for the Falafel burger, which just wasn't that tasty.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Desiree G.Los Angeles, CA78118111Mar 22, 2009
National Corn Dog Day?? $1.25 corn dogs? I'm there!!!
While on going.com , I noticed this being promoted and got really excited. I was even more excited when I noticed they were called dippin dogs here and you get to choose from a variety of sauces to dip your corn dog in. On top of that fried pickles and country fried bacon??? Ohhh my! I love dippin and I love the word FRIED. This place was basically GREASE heaven.
The dippin dogs were pretty big and taste like the average corn dog.
The sauces were ok.
The fried pickles were a bit too salty for me.
The fries were DELICIOUS though, they reminded me of the fries from hot dougs.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Andres D.Woodridge, IL7233203521Jan 30, 2011
BOOOOOOOOM! That the sound you hear when the basket of Country Fried Gyros and Country Fried Bacon hits the table. WASC is a deep fried utopia and one of many dippin' sauce is the mayor!
Powered by fresh cut fries, there is no turning back...who needs ketchup when the Argentine Garlic & Herb sauce is plenty. Owner Gus makes the most creative dipping sauce for your wang between the bun!
Seriously order the secret off menu item "Chili Balls". Shhhh! just do it!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Feb 18, 2015
Here's the scoop. This place is closing and moving near Wells/Van Buren area within the next few months according to management.
I will agree it wasn't the cleanest place as I thought they were going through renovations with stuff laying around. They also ran out of certain fountain drinks and when given the choice of that or a can out of the cooler, that wasn't full either. But it makes sense that if they are leaving the location because the building is run down, why put a full on effort?
The food was good and the fries were amazing but it's time for a new start/new location and I wish Gus and his partners the best of luck. I just hope they can sustain the rent vs profit margins for years to come!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tim H.Lombard, IL3688189466Mar 15, 2014
I find this little hole in the wall a real treat. Gus serves up some intersting creations as well as making the classics. My first visit I just had to judge my experience with a chili cheese dog. It was perfect, no beans in the chili is a must for me. Everything was served to order and pipping hot, love the fact he'll char your dog. My second visit I had to try the chili cheddar burger. What a unique concept. He breads and deep fries a thickened chili patty and places it a top a perfectly cooked burger with fried jalapenos and a touch of mustard and onion. It was huge and half filled me up. His fresh cut fries are also plentiful and delicious.
I'll certainly search him out anytime I find myself on the Northshore. His prices are extremely reasonable and they're very friendly.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
