- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2014I bought this for my first History class as an undergrad. There is a lot of condensed info in here. In fact, one of my friends who was first semester Master's at the time didn't understand something, and I got my little booklet out and handed it to her! It's a goodie, for sure in my book.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2013The field of history is changing in its research capabilities with the introduction of electronic databases and the Internet. In this age of information, historians have to know how to find information from a variety of sources, some of which were not available until the 1990s. In fact, the introduction of the Internet has increased the amount of information available from many different places, from libraries to private collections as well as resources that were once only available by advertising for them such as family Bibles and histories. In order for historians to fully use information available to them, they have to know how to use the resources as well as understand how to incorporate these additional resource methods into their repertoire.
Jenny Presnell does this in book. Based upon her own experiences in research and in teaching history students how to conduct research, Presnell developed this useful book. History students are often lectured on the importance of history and what historians do, but quite often the subject of how to conduct research is left up to the students. Presnell’s book addresses this shortcoming and in the process becomes a very useful resource for all history students. As a history instructor myself, I get asked about where to find information. Being able to use this book as a guide is very helpful.
Presnell covers the types of references, where they’re found, and the way they’re divided in usefulness. Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources are explained as well as evaluating them. While the Internet has helped explode the amount of information out there, it has also created a lot of worthless and outright false information as well. Evaluating sources is becoming a major ability for all historians due to this fact. She also incorporates a bit of geography into the book in addressing how to use maps and geographic information systems. In addition she explores images, motion pictures and audio sources and their role in the arsenal of the historian.
Gone are the days of the historians spending their career in the stacks. Today’s historian must be technological savvy and possess the ability to utilize the ever increasing amount of resources available to them in order to fully develop the historical areas they are researching. Presnell’s book helps to point students in that direction and is a worthy resource for any instructor to have when they are inevitably asked about how to research something.
