Just signed up for milkyway: two 64bit systems, linux one is dual opteron total of 4 cores and vista one is quad core. I have 37 remaining tasks on the vista. The tasks are listed at 6 hours but actually are taking about 9-10. The schedule deadline calls for them all to be done in under 48 hours which is impossible. I suspended all other projects and stopped all new work to get rid of these but it wont happen in 48 hours. There are some results that show up on the stats page in addtion to the 40 or more inprogress.

BUT - the linux system is not running any tasks at all. I checked the messages and it appears a bunch of work was done and results uploaded, but your stats page show 0.0 tasks. Here is a snapshot of the messages: http://swri.info/cpustats/mw_1.png So, what happened to the work units and why am I not getting any more? I did load the IA32 library on this ubuntu 8.04 system to handle 32bit apps so 1.23 should have worked even if 32 bit. "My Account" shows that I have some credit for the linux system up but the database shows nothing and tasks are "0".

G'Day BeemerBiker,
If you are looking for the results that you have done in the tasks listed under your account, then you will have to look quicker.

At the moment the database is being purged in a very short time, measured in minutes and well under the hour I now believe. This is due to database overload.

The project has said they hope to extend the time again once the new app gets sorted out, but we will have to wait and see about that one.

So you can see your results but you will have to be quick before the system purges the database and removes them.

OK, the results are disappearing before I can read them. I can understand that. I did manage to find a result from another kruncher and I am astonished at the following
http://tinyurl.com/65ruup

Note that the workunit shows two granted credits. At the top is 260.00 but the bottom shows 96.69 I dont recall any workunit detail showing anything other than the same value at the top (summary) and at the bottom (detail). I checked other projects to refresh my memory. For example,
ABChome http://tinyurl.com/5meafp

In addition, this kruncher has a really old 366mhz celeron (x86 family 6 model 6) and only ran for 3,222 seconds, just under an hour to get either 260 or 96.69 depending on what you believe.

This seems astonishing, a 366mhz Pentium 3 (celeron) gets more credit in less than an hour than a Q6700 or Q9750 core gets on ABC in an hour and a half or more. Something does not seem right. I saved a copy of the workunit detail in the event this one "disappears" by the time you try to read it.

However, none of this answers my original question as to why my linux system is not getting any jobs at all.

Well let me say it this way: Some of us run an optimized application that only takes around 3 min. on actual hardware. The result is, that these fast apps are eating up all fresh WUs very fast and it's hard to get new ones. ;-)

Besides that, credits are limited to 108 cr per h of crunching time, which a lot of boxes, even older ones, can reach if they use the fast app.

Now it's your job/fun to find out where to download the app. Might not be worth it, because we are supposed to get a new app very soon(since a very longe time), which will be incompatible to the old one. ;-))

cu,
Michael

ziegenmelker I see you are one of the lucky ones, 4 of your systems have work now. I am doing good the last few days when two have work, looks like I will not have some on all four at the same time for a long time.

It sure would be good if these took a little more time to crunch each (only it doing more work also). Than more people would have work. I can't complaine as I see a lot of people getting less work than I have gotten lately.

I'm 6 years younger than you, so I still have to work. Maybe therefore I get more WUs. ;-)
But hitting the update button, when boinc manager whants to wait 2h or more till next contact, sometimes helps too.

I totally agree.

Ok - I found and downloaded "V3" and sure enough, it is a 90:1 improvement. Literally, a 9+ hour job is now taking 6 minutes max. That is almost two orders or magnitude faster.

I can only assume that my linux-64 system had better code than the vista-64 system since it emptied its pot and seems to have hit the dealer limit.

My suggestion to the developer is to download the freebie Visual Studio 2008 Express and use that for subsequent builds. If using a really older intel type compiler then I suggest putting -iFP287 on the command line as a minimum.

My 34 unit backlog is now clearing and I have resumed all other projects as it is obvious I will easily meet tomorrows deadline.

Are all alpha projects like this?
