H.W. Wilson reference books and indexes resided on library shelves long
before people imagined an alternative universe in which reference
materials were delivered in electronic format. Founded in 1898 by Halsey
William Wilson, this historic company started with the Readers Guide to
Periodical Literature and now creates some 80 research databases. Last
week, the company was acquired by EBSCO Publishing
(http://www.ebscohost.com) and will become a division of the larger
company.

According to Sam Brooks, EBSCO Publishing senior vice president, sales and
marketing, Wilson employees are now considered employees of EBSCO
Publishing. EBSCO did not buy the Wilson building, with its iconic
lighthouse on the roof, in the Bronx. That facility will close and
operations will be centralized in Ipswich, Mass. The EBSCO headquarters,
said Brooks, offers room for expansion and is the logical choice for
streamlining physical operations. While not always easy, making
fiscally-responsible decisions such as this will allow us [to] invest more
resources into increasing the value of the products and services that we
create, and keep costs in check for our mutual companies. In line with
this thinking, EBSCO will also close Wilsons Dublin, Ireland, office as
well.

Although the value of Wilsons painstaking attitude toward indexing and
database quality is beyond doubt, it never gained the market share needed
to thrive in the current difficult economic climate. To many, the
acquisition was a foregone conclusionif not to EBSCO, then to another
database vendor. Industry consolidation surprises no one these days.

Customers who werent fond of the WilsonWeb interface expressed glee that
they could stop using it, while those who like it are faced with gaining
proficiency on EBSCOhost.

EBSCO expects to discontinue very few of the existing Wilson databases,
and when that does happen, customers will be upgraded to an enhanced
Wilson version at no additional charge. The FAQ mentions that all current
subscriptions to Wilson print books will be fulfilled by EBSCOs
subsidiary, Salem Press. However, print resources that have experienced a
decline in interest levels from librarians may eventually be discontinued.
Brooks added that they are not looking to make substantial cutbacks here
and will let market demand for these products drive decisions.

The well-respected Wilson thesauri will be merged into the EBSCO
thesaurus, which will improve the subject indexing in many of the
databases. Wilsons precise and abundant subject terms are expected to
enhance EBSCO customers search results.

One of the unique characteristics of librarianship in the United States
and Canada is the number of specialized firms that have grown alongside
libraries. They have provided us with books, journals, furniture, book
stacks, supplies, reference services, and more recent offerings of online
databases and library operating systems. During much of the 20th century,
in addition to major publishers, companies like Gaylord Bros., DEMCO,
Estey, and, of course, Wilson, were familiar to most librarians. Much of
the success of our institutions can be credited, in part, to the
commitment and dedication of the leaders and staff of these companies.

According to company officials, from an FAQ on the EBSCO Web Site, Wilson
indexing, abstracts and full text will be fully searchable via EBSCO
Discovery Service for subscribers of Wilson databases. In addition, the
vast majority of Wilson databases will be maintained, while some will be
merged with related EBSCO databases. Librarian feedback, the FAQ notes
will be key in some product decisions, and some of Wilsons print products
may discontinued. Wilson Web access will be maintained through 2011, while
the rollout of Wilson databases on EBSCOhost will roll out over the next
several months.

The H. W. Wilson Company is a publisher based in New York City. It
publishes print and online indexes, full-text databases, and other
products and services for public, school, college, and special libraries
around the world.

The company may be best known for its Readers Guide to Periodical
Literature, the most widely consulted index of articles in the popular
press. Other notable resources include the Core Collections series,
comprising Childrens, Middle and Junior High, Senior High, Fiction,
Graphic Novels, Nonbook Materials, and Public Library Core Collection:
Nonfiction. This series has been a standard resource for librarians since
it began publication under the name Childrens Catalog in 1909.

H. W. Wilson is also noted for its range of biographical reference
(including the critically acclaimed Biography Reference Bank and the
monthly Current Biography magazine), its Art Suite of databases (Art Full
Text, Art Museum Image Gallery, Cinema Image Gallery, and Avery Index to
Architectural Periodicals), and its retrospective databases, which add
decades of coverage to a librarys periodical coverage.
