House Republican Leaders Twist Obama Statement on Israel
May 12, 2008 9:19 PM
In an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., talked a great deal about Israel. He was rather effusive in his support for the Jewish state.
Apparently given nothing of substance to criticize, House Republican leaders then took a statement Obama made and twisted it to act as if the Democrat had insulted the Jewish state. Which he had not.
After describing some of the first times he thought about Zionism, Obama said "the idea of a secure Jewish state is a fundamentally just idea, and a necessary idea, given not only world history but the active existence of anti-Semitism, the potential vulnerability that the Jewish people could still experience."
He talked about how "the idea of Israel and the reality of Israel is one that I find important to me personally. Because it speaks to my history of being uprooted, it speaks to the African-American story of exodus, it describes the history of overcoming great odds and a courage and a commitment to carving out a democracy and prosperity in the midst of hardscrabble land."
He assailed Hamas as a terrorist organization and said the United States "should not be dealing with them until they recognize Israel, renounce terrorism, and abide by previous agreements."
When the topic turned to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Obama said, "Israel and the Palestinians have tough issues to work out to get to the goal of two states living side by side in peace and security." When asked if Israel besmirches the United States' reputation, Obama said "No, no, no."
Then he said: "But what I think is that this constant wound, that this constant sore, does infect all of our foreign policy. The lack of a resolution to this problem provides an excuse for anti-American militant jihadists to engage in inexcusable actions, and so we have a national-security interest in solving this, and I also believe that Israel has a security interest in solving this because I believe that the status quo is unsustainable. I am absolutely convinced of that ... I want to solve the problem..."
It seemed pretty clear to me that by "constant sore" Obama was referring to the unresolved Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As he says in the next sentence: the "lack of a resolution to this problem."
Nonetheless, House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, who knows better, accused Obama of calling Israel a "constant sore."
"Israel is a critical American ally and a beacon of democracy in the Middle East, not a ‘constant sore’ as Barack Obama claims," Boehner said. "Obama’s latest remark, and his commitment to ‘opening a dialogue’ with sponsors of terrorism, echoes past statements by Jimmy Carter who once called Israel an ‘apartheid state.’"
(That's interesting because in that very same interview, Obama rejected Carter's use of the term "apartheid" as applied to Israel. Said Obama: "I strongly reject the characterization. Israel is a vibrant democracy, the only one in the Middle East, and there’s no doubt that Israel and the Palestinians have tough issues to work out to get to the goal of two states living side by side in peace and security, but injecting a term like apartheid into the discussion doesn’t advance that goal. It’s emotionally loaded, historically inaccurate, and it’s not what I believe.")
Another member of the GOP House leadership, Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, also misrepresented what Obama said.
"It is truly disappointing that Senator Obama called Israel a ‘constant wound,’ ‘constant sore,’ and that it ‘infect[s] all of our foreign policy.’ These sorts of words and characterizations are the words of a politician with a deep misunderstanding of the Middle East and an innate distrust of Israel," Cantor said.
When Obama twisted Sen. John McCain's "100 Years" comment, it was pretty dishonest as well.
But this may be worse, because Boehner et al are falsely accusing Obama of besmirching a nation and a people. They are accusing him of being anti-Israel, even anti-Semitic. It is false.
This kind of twisting is unbecoming a party that claims to have superior ideas to Obama's fairly orthodox liberal record. Voters may conclude that Republicans think they have to make things up to beat Obama. Which they don't.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference House Republican Leaders Twist Obama Statement on Israel:
Obama stated that as President of the United States he would definitely support Israel, however if you visit the liberal democratic blog sites, it's obvious that an overwhelming number of Obama's constituents are pro-palestinian and anti-Israel. This dynamic also exists with Jeremiah Wright and the church Obama attended for 20 years. Obama has to look like he supports Israel to win the Presidency, however what about after he gets elected ... if he gets elected. If it becomes politically expedient, will Israel become expendable, just as Jeremiah Wright did? In the meantime, numerous Jewish journalists, and politicians are endorsing Obama. I suppose this provides them with acceptance in the leftist progressive world, and or protects their individual success and ambitions, since Obama appears to be the next democratic candidate. Anti-semitism runs rampid just under the surface in society. I just hope that Obama will not betray the jews, if it becomes a way to appease the Islamic world.

Thank you for your post. Hillary is a great leader, a strong leader, a confident leader, a smart leader, a compassionate leader, and would make a perfect president of the united states. Unfortunately, she is also a woman, and too many men are intimidated by all of the above, and react like 12 year old boys when they insult her. It's too bad she's a woman, in a country where women were the last to get the vote - behind blacks! That is the only reason she hasn't won the nomination.

How far into the future is that event?

Whew!! I'm so glad that I don't live in America. I'm a Canadian who've always admired America and what I thought it stood for, but I've had a change of heart. Americans can be incredibly gullible, fickle and downright stupid. I read the news everyday as well as research to learn the truth and I find it hard to believe that Americans just believe what some twisted person chooses to write. They are so blinded by racism that they can't even see that BARACK OBAM IS THE BEST THING FOR AMERICA right now, to restore 'America the Great' in the eyes of the world. PEOPLE, WAKE UP AND SIEZE THE OPPORTUNITY. VOTE FOR OBAMA.

To Come on now, boy, you Clinton supporters will come up with anything to defend your candidate. Nice to see her supporters are following the GOP lead by making things up. Doesn't surprise me though, Clintons campaign has been more like the Republicans than the Democrats anyway.

DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS - TAKE NOTICE
-----------ROE v. WADE-----------
Two of the current justices of the United States Supreme Court will probably retire within the next four years. One is 75 and the other is 84. This will give the new president the ability to nominate two new justices. If McCain is elected you can be sure the new justices will be just like Roberts, Scalia and Thomas: willing to overturn ROE v. WADE. So think when you vote!!!

I'm sick of the grade school tactics on the part of the gop - remember, the same folks that sold you a president you'd like to have a beer with? They can't debate the issues, so they stoop to ridiculous distractions like this. Wake up americans, the gop is insulting your intelligence. Do your own research - look into the candidates backgrounds - don't be swayed by image, look for substance and conviction.

Having voted reliably Republican for most of my life, I'll never vote for another one, under any circumstances. I quit voting Republican when they nominated the current idiot in the White House, and I'll never vote for another one again if I live to be 150 years old. Republicans are the scum of the earth.

It amazes me that people know what the Republicans are doing and have become so terrified of them that they allow them to have all this power. These kinds of Republican methods are WRONG and the people have to tell them so. We are all allowing the BULLIES to control us. Democrats keep saying we should not select a nominee who we like and believe is a good candidate and would make a good President because,....the BULLIES will do something. Let's ALL SHUDDER and HIDE IN FEAR.
Just stop the Bully by calling him out for goodness sakes!!!

It never ceases to amaze me how dirty and hateful people can be just to try and "win".
BTW, 'eyes wide open'...I hate to break it to you, because you seem as delusional as Hillary, but she is toast. Sad that you feel the need to create and spread lies (votes counted twice? try proof b4 professing you know what you're talking about) in an effort to convince people otherwise. Funny that anything negative said about HRC is lies and smearing her, but the same of BHO is fine...just as long as it helps your agenda of trying to convince folks she's not dead in the water.

How did Obama "twist" McCain's 100 years comment? McCain wants to stay until the troops achieve victory, which means no more wounded or killed troops. Then he wants to stay for 100 years. If people of Iraq continue to fight, as they did against Alexander, Caesar, Genghis Khan, and many other until they left. He will not pull out the troops regardless of the loss of life, treasure, even if it takes 100 years.

GOP wishes they had a candidate 1/10 as qualified, intelligent, well-spoken and charismatic as Obama.
GOP is perfectly represented by McCain - old, out of touch, moral compass missing its needle, tired, stupid and marinated in religious hypocrisy. Oh, and loves money so much he married it twice.

I think it would be wise to vote all the Republicans out of office. Ever since Bush became the president, this country has gone in the wrong direction. Hopefully it can be put on the right track ..The soon the better.
The only other thing i can say is that all those that voted to put Bush back in office for a second term are people that are affected by "scare" methods.

Of all of the posts condemning Obama here today, the common thread is not one attempts to affirm what is right about McCain and his undefined vision for America. Simply believing that McCain is the better candidate because he is not Obama is hardly a winning strategy, but it seems to be the tact that the republicans will use, as they seem to have no other strategy to sell McCain or what he allegedly represents.
When the best argument that the republicans position for the candidancy of McCain is that he isn't Obama, shows that they are in a very weak state. McCain should have spent his time during the Obama v. Clinton fight, to finely tune his message but what instead we see is a campaign that chooses to run only on the message of fear the 'other' guy. Something that Hannity and Limbaugh seems to wallow in, but who can't come up with any valid reasons to support their guy in the age when the majority of Americans are seeking answers, not another round of divisive politics meant to sift out the worse of two evils.
Its time for the republicans to tell us why we should buy McCain, and they are running out of time spending their energy speaking about Obama.
Posted by: VinceinATL | May 13, 2008 10:33:24 AM
Yes they do have to make up things to beat him, not that they can, but that is what they are left with, just like Hillary was left with lies and fake controversy. We have seen for over a year now that there is nothing of substance to attack Obama over, he is a great candidate, and so we see time and time again that his opponents, whether Hillary or the Republicans, have to resort to lies and distortions to attack him. But it won't work.
Posted by: TPIP | May 13, 2008 10:33:18 AM
I am not surprised about GOPs legislators lying about anything these days, this country has endured eight years of a lying idiot and his lackeys. This is simply more of the same. Look at the lying flip-flopper that they are propping up to run for president. McCain had a chance back in 2000 when he WAS a maverick, now in 2008 he is nothing more than a Bush puppet.

eyes wide open, it's the math, stupid!
While the race is not over, there's no way Hillary can win the nomination. Hillary is like a basketball team trailing 10 points with 6 seconds on the time clock. While the game isn't over, there's no way that team can win.
Posted by: RFBorjal | May 13, 2008 10:25:22 AM
Wow... it's up close and personal now. The hidden racism in this country is gradually coming to light the closer Obama gets to the nomination. The thing I find most interesting is the fact that blacks can no more claim Obama than can whites. I guess that 1 drop rule applies. Obama is a great American and will make a great President for all of us. What will be will be and it won't matter how many of you hate him because of his skin.

McCain's reference to 100 years in Iraq is entirely in bounds. The fact is that McCain hasn't presented any viable path to an Iraq occupation that wouldn't have our troops in constant fighting. He's even said in interviews that the Iraq situation is not comparable to Japan, Germany, or Korea. Late last year he acknowledged that the political and religious realities of the region wouldn't support a long term occupation. So, why can't he be called on his 100 year statement when it's obviously a direct contradiction of his earlier position? Honestly, the media needs to stop playing so soft with McCain. I know he's very friendly with reporters, but they need to stop letting that cloud their judgment.
As for the Boehner thing, it's just detestable. He needs to step up and formally apologize for the statement when he retracts it.
Posted by: Justin | May 13, 2008 10:11:40 AM
There is a great fear by the mainstream media right now that they have become irrelevant due to the Obama campaign. His grass roots organization will be so incredible strong by November that the Clinton's will be completely irrelevant.
The reason the campaign has not ended is because Obama has no doubt how he can when without her support. I do not think she can say the same.
Posted by: Hank Jestor | May 13, 2008 10:07:05 AM
Thank you for printing the facts of this matter. There's no way at all that a person can read the portion of the interview having to do with Israel and Palestine and NOT understand that Obama mean "the conflict" was "the wound." The twisting of his words is desperation or sheer boneheadedness.

This is VERY SCARY.... It makes you wonder...
I am personally insulted by the ideal that MRS. Clintons is playing the race card. Are her "base of supporters" racist..?? Is this true? Why IS she playing the race card? I have a college degree, I have struggle to change the course of my life but, I do not fit her base mold so does that mean that my vote does not matter if she becomes the nominee?

The reality is that the Republicans have nothing on Obama so they have to lie and make up stories to create a narrative that once again appeals to Americans' fears. The Republicans have become a party of losers, with no new ideas, no plans for the future of ALL Americans, just more Rovian name calling, association politics to deflect the vast nothingness of their own candidates and agenda. What a pathetic party they have become.

Why is West Virginia bothering to vote ---Obama doesn't care about any more primaries or what the people think. He has his delegate lead and some powerful people backing him. Forget Kentucky too...what is the point. All of the networks were excited about the primaries and posted info about them, now nothing. It is like the US has been taken over already and we do not have to go through the process or even vote--as Michelle Obama said last week...not if we get to the White House, but "when".

This is Rove. Pure and simple. Rove's a festering boil of a human being, but he's a cunning one, and the rest of the Republicans haven't the brains between them to come up with this on their own. Left to their own devices they'd be as shameful and wretchedly racist as Hillary, running around yelling "Can't you see - he's black! Why can't you white people see that he's black!"
It literally has the stank of Karl upon it, yea and verily!
Posted by: gomonkeygo | May 13, 2008 9:38:21 AM
Jake, the 100 years thing is completely accurate. You're simply wrong on that point. There is no path to get from here to a post-WWII European-style deterrent-only situation which does not involve at least ten more years of guerilla warfare. The McCain doctrine has us in Iraq forever. Sure, he meant 100 years of the natives throwing roses at our feet, but that isn't going to happen, ever. Isn't that obvious -- even to non-DFH's -- by now?

I hope all the Hillary supporters that have been jumping on my back for claiming that MANY working class whites that do not vote for Obama are racist, read the article on MSN and CBS this morning. I knew this before the article because i have campaigned for Obama. I have been spat at, caleld a nigg*r-lover, had our signs burned, threatened, and suffered unspeakable abuse. Do the blacks that support Obama do this to whites? I am white and suffering this abuse. I cannot even imagine what blacks suffer. Read the article for yourself on those websites.

The lies have now taken on there own life.
That is all they have to argue with.
Do they realize what a black spot they put on America? All of these lies people type...and they are out and out lies out of the worst side of being human... they are not "misinterpretations" or "hidden truths" that just the Clinton campaigns have discovered.
obama is a GREAT American...everything he has stood for and has been fighting for proves that. Just because he has taken down the woman you all blindly fawned for does not mean you can go to making up stories and tearing this country apart all for the sake of your anger and spite...that you didn't get what you wanted...
soldiers are dying and being ignored when they come home
our budget is being destroyed by the Republican foreign policy stance
our countries dependence on foreign oil and that same foreign policy is making us less safe and less economically viable each and every day...
women's reproductive rights are being threatened
the world is in peril
and you all want to spread more libelous, angry fantasy to make yourselves feel better because you are angry...
I am sure your children and grandchildren (and the soldiers who as we speak are being denied education benefits they deserve by that other candidate) they will all thank you for that.

It won't take the Republicans long to expose all of Obama's middle eastern ties. Obama should exit gracefully from the race soon, so as not to damage the democratic party any more than he, Donna Brazile, Howard Dean, Kennedy, Kerry and company already have. Obama has too many dirty Chicago ties, and marxist ties, and terrorist organization ties. Obama would be gone if he was named Hillary.

This guy is truly a poster child for old style corrupt politics. A "constant sore" oozing on the face of our Constitution. There is no place for vermin like him in public service. If he worked for me, I'd hand him severence today!

It's clear that these congressmen are attempting to distort his words; he was clearly not referring to Israel itself as a "constant sore." The current state of things in that region is not great, however. We have friends who live in Israel and it is a difficult place to live and raise children. The ongoing conflict is not good for anyone concerned.

The jewish voters of america and Isreal heavily favor Obama.

It make you wonder the level of education of some of our House Reps, when they couldn't comprehend simple English.

Senator Obama is running for President of the United States of America. He is not running for prime minister of Israel (even though Olmert may be indicted soon).
It is subservience to Israel as demonstrated by John Boehner that makes America vulnerable for another terrorist attack
.
The 9-11 Report stated that the attack on the WTC and the Pentagon was to protest the presence of U.S. forces in Saudi Arabia and our support for Israel. Bin Laden pressed Mohammad to stage the attacks as early as mid-2000 after Ariel Sharon offended many Muslims by visiting the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. He tried to accelerate the operation again when he learned Sharon would be visiting the White House in June or July 2001. We have removed our U.S. forces from Saudi Arabia and it would be prudent to stop supporting Israel if that support encourages another terrorist attack on our country! To jeopardize our security by supporting Israel is un-American!
Bin Laden was not ambiguous about the reasons for the 9-11 attack. We addressed one of his stated reasons – ‘we removed our forces from Saudi Arabia.’ Instead of addressing the second stated reason – ‘our support for Israel,’ our freedoms have been diminished through the PATRIOT ACT, which is un-American and citizens are being murdered and abused at airports by security personnel, telephone companies are providing information on customers, i.e., warrantless eavesdropping program for which they are seeking immunity, etc. This is unacceptable! Most of those who are eroding our cherished freedoms didn't fight nor sacrifice for those freedoms. Our freedoms are not theirs to squander.
Israel is an albatross around the neck of America. Senator Obama has America's best interest at heart. Rep. Boehner has Israel's best interest at heart!
Chagrined

The Republicans are going in for the kill. Good Luck Obama supporters! You will find in the end that you are outnumbered. Jewish support is important and Obama is pandering to them for now. Though if you look at his campaign, he doesn't have Pro-Israeli advisors. Samantha Power booted months ago was anti-Israel. In this clique, we know that his other advisors Zbigniew Brzezinski, Robert Malley, and Susan Rice are Pro-Palestinian. MSNBC's Mika 'Obama Troll' Brzezinski is Zbigniew's daughter.

I do not buy the comedy between Wright and Obama, they are still pals, they think alike and Obama should not be the Democrat nominee, he does not have a chance in the General Election. Twenty years supporting sermons of hate and he thinks we believe that now he is offended, and enraged? He is a phony and a hypocrite, the worst kind of politician. He sure learns fast Only five years and he is involved with radicals, launderer money through the law firm he worked for, did favors for rezko in exchange for campaign money and a front lawn, Sinclair rumor and all this while he looks down on regular Americans. Obama is the kind of politician we can’t believe.

Just like Bush with the war, Obama lied to the Democrats at the begining of the campaign hiding his allegiance to Rev. Wright and Black theology. That is the only reason he is ahead in the primaries. After we found out he has not win anything but NC in which obviously there was fraud.. Obama is as deceiving and conniving as Bush. Write Hillary on the ballot.

Obama's church is anti israel
So of course his basic feelings are going to be for how his church feels about israel.
Israel has been a long time allie to the US and should always remain one.
Whether obama's church and UCC likes it or not.

This is a race for to elect an American president not an Israeli president. Those who wan to elect an Israeali president go to Israel.

There are many reasons why Clinton is losing the nomination contest, some having to do with her strategic mistakes, others with the groundswell for "change." But for all Clinton's political blemishes, the darker stain that has been exposed is the hatred of women that is accepted as a part of our culture.

Say whatever you want. This is Obama's time. Hillary and McCain are great candidates. Both could make great presidents. But we need someone who can look at our state of affair from a different angle. If we do not elect Obama, we will always wonder 'What if'.
So vote Obama.

So many are not feeling the Obama love.
His chickens are coming home to roooooooooooooost!!!!!

Sluggo:
Who knows what Obama is thinking because he talks out of both sides of his mouth. During the week he loves Israel, although on Sunday's he is dancing in the aisle soaking up Rev Wright's sermons of hate.

I don't think he loves the Israelis at all;
I think his heart is for the inhabitants of the other side of the (gaza) strip.
I think this is a vaudeville show played for an anticipated blizzard of votes.
I think he'll be disappointed.
Many Jewish people will be voting for Hillary.
One of them will be me!

BE CAREFUL-
I never said I was going to vote for Obama. But it's good that he's finally gone on record with clear statements supporting Israel, condemning Hamas, and condemning the Israel equals apartheid shtick. It was a step long overdue but it was something. Hillary is a longtime, proven friend of Israel and the jewish people. But you know, in the end, the only way to save our country is to elect a Democrat.

In his first interview since the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, the presumptive Democratic nominee Obama says that the most important thing he could achieve as president would be to deal with Iraq and the threat of al Qai'da in Afghanistan while improving "our influence around the world."
"On Israel's 60th anniversary his target audience were America's Jewish voters, some of whom have been a bit cool to him, in comparison to Hillary or McCain. It was no surprise then to hear Obama tell CNN's Wolf Blitzer that when he is president America will stay glued to Israel, "not just for 60 years but for 600 years."
Israel is not a political ball to be pandered and batted about by the highest bidder.
On another site, I believe it was the New YOrk SuN)I think I saw Obama dressed in robes and a crown and calling himself the king of the bile..... naah; probably just imagined it.
But the Jewish citizenry of this country is very protective of Israel, and will not put up with stupid comments which are unable to be supported....as in: "when he's president
Israel will stay glued to us for 600 years">
What? Is he going to change his name to Jonah?
And as of now he has not won or earned the presidency... though he really doesn't care if all our countrymen get to vote for their very own nominee....
And frankly, Israel might not like being associated with anyone except Hillary Clinton.
The point of this rant is that Obama comes off ultra weak when it comes to diplomacy!
Which is why I continue to support Hillary Clinton!

Obama is as politically slippery and opportunistic as they come. We had eight years of an arrogant, inexperienced, vacationing, slippery president. We all lose if this man FIRST becomes the nominee. I've been a Democrat my entire adult life and am greatly disappointed with the pathetic handling of these primaries by the DNC. It's outrageous. It is more clear than ever why the republicans land their butts in office term after term.
