Chesterfield County police are investigating the theft of a large Barack Obama campaign sign from the front yard of a Baptist minister. Someone replaced the sign with a large Confederate flag.

The campaign sign for Obama, the first African-American nominee of a major political party, was pulled from its wooden post Friday night and a Confederate flag was tacked to the posts.

Chesterfield police spokeswoman Ann Reid confirmed today that police are investigating the sign's disappearance as a larceny. Reid said the sign was taken between 7 and 10:05 p.m. on Friday.

4. I have an idea...
Edited on Mon Oct-20-08 12:07 PM by Dennis Donovan
Cover the sign with the same invisible ink they put on bank money set aside in case of robberies. Someone's gonna get caught "red-handed," so to speak.:D

On edit: my other idea (tongue-in-cheek, of course) is to create a METAL Obama sign and grind the edges razor-sharp. Your sign will still be there the next day, albeit covered in blood and the ground around it littered with severed digits...

6. That's my county!
I have to say Chesterfield County, which is a suburb of Richmond used to be almost totally red, but the past five years have had a blue-ing effect. The further south you go into the county and away from the City of Richmond it gets more rural and more rightwing. Just south of Chesterfield and Petersburg is a town called Colonial Heights. When I first moved here I was told that the townfolk like to refer to it a "Colonial Whites" because they keep the place free of "riff raff" and other bad elements that places like Petersburg and Richmond have to deal with.
Charming. Imagine being proud of your white supremacy.

7. Goober Probably Needed The Confederate Sign as a Marker to the Still
The next time someone tells me about the "race relations progress" we've made, I'm going to hit him or her over the head with a McCain/Palin sign. This type of story sickens me - ignorant redneck racists.

This is domestic terrorism. Are such incidents being investigated by the FBI as such? The poor souls doing this have probably been paling around with McCain and Palin.

30. Looking for the positive in all this
These people are bubbling to the top, exposing themselves some in broad daylight. My hope is that with this openess of bigotry we can confront it and diffuse it. Their actions say nothing about Obama or Obama supporters. Their actions say a lot about they themselves.

This is the kind of behavior that tells you about the true character of your neighbors, friends, associates etc. Not the everyday mask people wear in 'polite' society. This tells you how someone would behave when they think no one is looking or if they think they won't get caught. It's a corrupt moral code and it is better to know about it than to not know.

Get cameras, or do what it takes to catch people like this in the act. Make them own their actions. They need to be exposed. Do you want your kid playing at this person's house? Do you want this person leading a girl scout troup or sitting on the PTA or city council? I'm all about informed choice. Sometimes we have to document the information ourselves.

16. I just shake my head
when I see these young guys around here (NC background 2nd 3rd gen) driving around in their 4X4 p/u's with conf flag license plates. What a bunch of jerks, "Hey doofus's, the Conderacy lost, did you know that?" The stereotypical young man with the conf flag and the rifle racks can most certainly profiled as meth heads, the new whiskey?

17. Many of those Confederate flag wavers...
claim that they're just "honoring their ancestors and their heritage."

They don't or won't realize that not everyone at that time in the South fought for or even supported the Confederacy. Morgan county, Alabama, for example, sent about an equal number of soldiers to each side during the war, as did much of the northern two-thirds of the state, and the 5th Alabama Army of the Union fought on the winning side at Gettysburg.

Try telling these idiots that, though...

32. Spot on, enuegli.
I have an ancestor who fought for both sides over the course of the war. He was part native american and a sharecropper; was originally signed up to the Confederacy with his wealthy landowner. Was captured by the Union twice: paroled the first time, sent to Fort Douglas the second time, and came out of prison and joined the Union several months later. Really interesting, actually. His family lived in and around northern Alabama/Georgia during that time. (He and family were semi-nomadic to that area, based on Census data.)

The Civil War was hardly as cut and dried as some of those flag-wavers think.

22. The "stars and bars" are synonymous with hate
and people who try to downplay that fact, by saying it's all about "heritage not hate", they do not want to face the reality of the the old southern Confederacy, the lynchings, Jim Crow, "separate but equal", and extends itself to things like the Christian Identity movement and anti-Semitism. The KKK was probably the first organization in the US to apply good-old-boy Southern terrorism on a mass-scale here in America, it was born in the deep South, and that's where it will die if it ever dies at all. The Dixiecrats are now pure-blooded Repugs.

24. Obama sign replaced with rebel flag (Richmond VA)

Chesterfield probes theft of political sign from minister's yard

Leroy C. McLaughlin finished his workday on Friday and was cooking dinner when a family member phoned.

The 4-foot-by-8-foot Barack Obama campaign sign that McLaughlin had posted in the front yard of his Chesterfield County home was gone.

A Confederate flag hung in its place.

Surveying the scene that night, McLaughlin, 78, a Baptist minister and an Army veteran who lived to see the first black person nominated to a major-party ticket, had a message for whoever left the flag, viewed by many as a symbol of racial oppression: "I love you, and God does, too."

He says he wants whoever took the sign to get a talking-to about trespassing and taking property that doesn't belong to them -- and about the significance of the symbol they left behind.

"I feel like this is somebody with a lot of hatred in their heart," he said. "It's our job to help the guy try to do better in life."

From the local ABC affiliate
http://www.wric.com/global/Story.asp?s=9209239

"I was kind of upset and shook up," said Reverend Leroy McLaughlin, the signs owner.

Rev. McLaughlin does not hold back when he describes the culprits.

"...evil folks, mean and got the devil in them."
"I don't know what it's all about but it definitely seems like it for them to put that up... There's a lot of folks still out there, who don't want this to happen but there's going be a change."

The man of God says revenge is not on his mind.

"I'm going to pray for the guy ‘cause the bible tells us to pray for the evil ones that do things wrong against you."
