- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2021Our author knows her stuff.
If your parrot shows problem behaviors, buy this book and use her techniques. Consistently applied as described, over time, they will work. Have patience, Hold the line, and have more patience, there is no quick magic fix in this book or anywhere else.
I am a retired behavioral psychologist who began studying behavior modification at the age of seventeen, continuing the focus through my education. My first professional experiences were applications of behavior modification to teaching basic skills to moderately and severely impaired developmentally disabled adults. I have studied "ethology-" the description and interpretation of species-specific naturally occurring or instinctive behavior patterns. I have taught university courses integrating behavior modification and comparative ethology under the interdisciplinary rubric of "cognitive science."
At different times I have kept two "used" Amazon parrots, addressing their behavior problems with nothing remotely approaching the success, insight, and skill our author describes and demonstrates.
Our author is DOING much more than she is DESCRIBING. The gaps may be confusing to some readers.
There is a fine line between overwhelming readers with technical information and providing necessary detail on principles behind applied examples. Our author could have devoted at least a chapter to explaining development and use of "ethograms," a term she mentioned only once without explanation-though she later defined it in her glossary. She nonetheless provided meticulous and insightful descriptions of parrots' innate behavior "ethograms," particularly her descriptive hierarchy of threat and aggressive behaviors.
The behavioral term "positive reinforcement" was correctly defined and then used throughout the text. Elsewhere it has too often degenerated into a hackneyed buzzword. Our author's applications could be explained more clearly in relation to the principle: she employed and procedurally described conditioned reinforcers such as the use of a clicker as an immediate consequence for appropriate behavior, but she never used the term. She substituted, "bridging stimulus," a term I did not recognize.
Understanding of "negative reinforcement" is a common stumbling block for writers attempting behavioral terminology. I respect that our author clearly distinguished "negative reinforcement" from "punishment," different processes often confused. She avoided contrived meaningless technobabble such as "negative behavior" and other common malaprops.
Before attempting to raise another bird, I will return to this book many times, filling my Kindle copy with highlights, notes, and cross references. The book was most valuable to me because it raised the question, "how could underlying theoretical concepts be expressed and integrated more clearly without overwhelming a general reader?"
A complimentary book based on the same principles of behavior modification and providing excellent detail on training bird behavior is "The Perfectly Trained Parrot," by Rebecca K. O'connor; also available on Kindle.. While either book stands alone, The two fit together perfectly. Ms. O'Connor's book could be "Volume two" of a single "how to" parrot-training manual. I give it another five-star review.
If you're interested in parrots, I also recommend "Alex & Me," by Irene Pepperberg, available on Kindle. It's not primarily a "how to" manual, It's an amazing true story that has changed scientific understanding of avian intelligence. "Alex" the parrot is perhaps the single most important bird in human history.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2008Excellent reference for owners of large parrots. This book will explain why your bird does what it does. It is absolutely the best book I have purchased so far concerning the behavior of my macaw. It takes the mystery out of your birds aggressive behaviors. It explains your bird's natural daily routines. I found it most enlightening. Once you understand how parrots behave in the wild, your bird's behaviors will make a whole lot more sense to you, and that truly helps you provide the best for your companion. This book is a real jewel for owners of large parrots and I think it should be required reading for all who own one. Well written and highly informative, it is by far the best book that I have found on parrot behavior to date. It will really help you understand your bird.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2009This is one of the best books I have read on parrot care and training. It was especially helpful because I have a "second-hand" parrot who was coerced into stepping up and as a result is very aggressive with hands. I found it helpful that she addressed this particular problem. I also liked that she gave references and examples of training. I would have liked step by step instructions or details for example Barbara Heidenreich said she worked 20 minutes each day for two weeks to train a bird and I was curious to know what she did each day for 20 minutes and how she began and ended those sessions. Maybe she will write another book where I can learn more. I also liked her philosophy of building a relationship with the bird rather than trying to dominate the bird. Thank you for this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2012came in great condition. still reading it.has great information since I am a first time bird owner it helps me. Has info on lots of problem people come across with their birds and what people do. I have a problem with a bitting macaw who I got as a rescue. I wanted to book to help me stop the bird from bitting me everytime I tried to get him out of his cage since he was cage bound. I found a technique instead of pressing him to stepup and bitting me. I now get him to come to me and reward him when he does with treats. He now comes out of his cage in the morning on his own and steps up on my arm I take him to his perch and reward and praise him. So the book has helped me with my bird. I am still reading it to learn other things about birds to prevent problems with them. Very happy I purchased it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2006If you have ever worked with birds that show aggression, this book will be a easy to understand and excellent all-around resource for you. Great for first time parrot people and experienced trainers alike. Includes explanations based in science (ethology and behavior sciences) as well as training techiniques. Sections on bird body language are very helpful. This book goes into more depth than Good Bird! and is a very useful addition. I recommend this book to many of my students, and I haven't heard a disapointed comment yet. I look forward to more from Barbara! If you've not gotten a chance to check out the magazine, Good Bird! it is also very worthwhile.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2013This book is focused on aggression in parrots, and certainly, aggression is at the root of many problem behaviors in parrots. The overall quality of the advice in this book is good, but the writing tends to be unfocused and the author is frequently storytelling. I don't know that this book would be helpful if one is trying to solve a problem other than aggression (for me, it wasn't helpful).

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting
Interesting book. Talks a lot about positive reinforcement which is good, but doesn't give clear, concise things you should do with an aggressive bird. I'm still wondering what action should be taken if a bird bites while on my hand. Lots of questions left unanswered.
