Greek Peak 1/5/05 - central NY conditions

Big storm on the way. We thought we'd usher it in under the lights at Greek Peak last night.

It snowed 2" in the morning, and the natural snow mixed nicely with the tilled granular to make some fine carveable conditions. Nary a sheet of ice. Greek Peak once again did an excellent job working with what they made to make some good skiing even after a week of warm temps and rain.

We only skied 3-4 trails last night. Iliad and Eleysian Fields/Stoic or Christies. They had Odyssey closed for snowmaking. Probably pretty good today. We didn't bother going over to Chair 4 to try out Trojan. I rarely seems worth it. THe best skiing was on Iliad, and Fields/etc wasn't bad either. Kept us entertained for 3 1/2 hrs. Many of our local buddies were there. The group got up do a dozen at one point, pinheads and fixed heeled alike, out enjoying the skiing and socializing at the top while we waited for everyone to get off the lift.

While we were there, we did not see a single flake fall from the sky. It wasn't until we were half-way home at 9pm when we saw the first falling snow. It began to accumulate quickly and by the time we got home, the 3" of snow on our lawn was nice and fluffy and ready to ski. I thought about doing a lap around our land, but I was tired from telemarking for 3 1/2 hours without a break and opted for the hot tub instead. Snow accumulated on our heads while we soaked in the hot water.

In the morning the snow had accumulated to 6-8", so I decided to go to work late and take the dogs for a lap around our 23 acres before starting my work day. At 8am it was raining and the nice soft snow was coated with a crusty surface. Shit. I snapped onto my brand new pair of Fischer Rebounds to make the best of it.

Well, it was ok, but not great. I was able to climb, slide and glide, but the crust would sometimes add some drag and make turning kinda tricky. I didn't stay out long. It is pouring rain right now. Ick.

This morning's report from my friends who got up for 'first tracks'

6" of new snow

" It was sleeting on the mtn (raining and sleeting on the way out). There was a crust on the new heavy stuff. It got better as it got tracked up. "
