From Booklist

When television news anchor Christine Cannon retreats to the house she co-owns with ex-husband Joe, the last person she expects to run into is Joe, with his 18-year-old wife. And Joe certainly didn't want to run into his newshound ex-wife while trying to keep an old friend's daughter, Marina, safe through a marriage of convenience. Rekindled sparks fly between the lovers as they face the problems that wrecked their marriage, and Joe realizes he needs Christine's help to protect Marina, who turns out to be the daughter of the leader of a war-torn country in Europe, from the press. Christine and Joe must choose between their careers and the safety of the young woman. Barbara Bretton has proven herself to be a consistent writer with a growing following; compare her books with those of Barbara Delinsky and Nora Roberts. Recommended where Bretton is popular. In the month of February 1982 I wrote and sold my first novel. And no, I wouldn't believe it either if it hadn't happened to me. I sent in my manuscript on Thursday February 21, 1982 and four days later the telephone rang and I heard the amazing words, "We want to buy your book." How I wish you could have seen me. I was standing by the kitchen door of our North Babylon house, the picture of cool sophistication, as I listened to Vivian Stephens explain the terms of the deal to me. You would have thought I'd sold a first book every single day of my life. Yes, I said. Sounds wonderful. Thank you so much for calling. I look forward to our association. That cool sophistication hung on until I hung up the phone, took a deep breath, then promptly threw up on my shoes.

I was thirty-one years old, unagented, unschooled, unfamiliar with anything to do with the business of publishing. To put it mildly, I was in shock. My husband was working in Manhattan at the time (and finishing up his degree at night) so it would be hours until I could break the news to him. This was too exciting to waste on a phone call. I wanted to see his face when I told him that my dream had finally come true -- and came with a $6000 advance!

He pulled into the driveway at midnight. I was waiting in the doorway, holding a bottle of champagne and two glasses. I didn't have to say a word. He knew right away and the look of joy and pride in his eyes warms me now, years later, long after the advance faded into memory.

It's been six years since Christine and Joe's marriage fell apart. She left him but she is still hurt by it. She and Joe still share a house in New Jersey and she decides to use it while she waits for her new apartment to be ready. She can use some of that time to work on ideas for her show on television. She is rich and successful but she is not very happy. Not to mention that but her and the photographer taking pictures of her for a Vanity Fair piece are being joined by Joe and his new wife. She doesn't know the marriage is one of convenience and not for love. But with his continued anger at his ex-wife, will Joe choose to fill her in on the truth. And will an ambitious Slade continue to dig into the story and put Marina's life in danger? Many twists and turns to the story unwinds in this well written and complicated romance.

I chose a 5 star rating because this book was great. It had romance, happiness and a little sadness. This was another great Barbara Bretton book.

It needed a different ending. A miracle would have been Christine having a baby. If ever this story gets a different ending I'll buy it again.

While with a romance you can predict what will happen, this was quite enjoyable because of the two strong women.
