Voices of Jason Alexander, Elizabeth Daily, Nancy Travis. Duckman isn't your average suave, sophisticated private eye. In fact, he's rude, ignorant and slovenly, and he barely manages to solve enough cases to cover his alimony payments and cable TV bills! Animated. Features the first 2 seasons of this adult oriented sitcom with 22 episodes on 3 DVDs. 1994-95/color/8 hrs., 16 min/NR.

Contrary to Duckman's worst fears, the "private dick/family man" is not doomed to "live an unnoticed, unappreciated life," not with the DVD release of this cult fave animated series based on Everett Peck's underground comic. For four seasons, Duckman nested comfortably in the USA Network's "Up All Night" programming block, its politically incorrect misanthropy given full voice by Jason Alexander as a character whose cluelessness, insensitivity, deviancy, and boorishness are his best qualities. Who is Duckman? No one special, he laments, "I'm just one more duck detective who works with a pig and lives with the twin sister of his dead wife, three sons on two bodies and a comatose mother-in-law who's got so much gas she's a fire hazard." As with Alexander's signature Seinfeld character, George Costanza, Duckman has few redeeming qualities. He's an incompetent detective whose few acts of heroism are inadvertent (in one episode, he is sent flying after groping two women and unwittingly lands on a Presidential attacker). He rants and raves on everything from "clean" comics to the commercialism of TV news. His catchphrases are equally obnoxious: "What the hell are you starin' at?" and "Homana, homana, how wah." This could get tiresome after awhile, but what buoys Duckman are its inventive and vividly colored animation (produced by the folks who birthed Rugrats, Klasky Csupo), sharp and clever writing, and virtuoso voice work by Alexander and company, including Nancy Travis as Duckman's braying sister-in-law Beatrice, Dweezil Zappa as Duckman's dim son, Ajax, and E. J. Daily and the late Dana Hill as his other conjoined-headed son, Charles and Mambo, and Gregg Berger as breakout character Cornfed Pig, Duckman's brilliant porcine partner whose deadpan just-the-facts delivery suggests Jack Webb, but who insists his "spiritual forerunner" is Jack Lord. Duckman can be hit and miss, and some of its satiric targets (reality shows, fact-based TV movies, clip episodes) are obvious, but for those who like their comedy most fowl, it really fills the bill. --Donald Liebenson

- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2025Super funny show, for me it is up there with South Park for the best Adult Comedy tv shows of all time. Great writing, good animation and awesome voice acting.
If you want to laugh this is well worth it, two thumbs WAY UP!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2012Duckman is by far one of the better cartoon shows with adult humor thrown into the mixture. But for those out there who never saw Duckman or heard of the show I'll give you a blow by blow of the first two seasons. First off great one liners plus very funny actor doing the voice over of the Duckman character. Cornfeed his trusty sidekick at the detective job. Another added bonus was King Chicken as the main bad guy for the series. One of my favorite episodes was the Super Computer because what the super computer said was true "A perfect world is an inperfect world." Violence wise I enjoy how Duckman killed fluffy and uranus in each episode made me laugh so hard. One of the shows had Cornfeed with an afro priceless. I like how the comedians did guess spots on the show for example "Joking the chicken." Now Season two had some killer one liners for example Cornfeed "When I snap I kill him first." The Dope trail was priceless because Cornfeed as a laywer was so priceless and humorous. America the Beuatiful good musical ending, The Gem turns Duckman sees his mother and tries not to end up like her. Nam episode Cornfeed thinks he is a father and goes to try find out if it's true and Duckman thinks he was in Nam but it was all the Nam movies he saw growing up. Ajax ends up writing poems and gets a job writing gretting cards but Duckman saves his son. The last show was just called Clip Job which was just highlights of Duckman's life manly all the bad things he did to his family, friends, and coworkers, plus innocent female bystanders. Overall very funny show with great one liners, some moral lessons thrown in here and there, so if you got a great sense of humor and enjoy this type of Cartoon then buy it and enjoy show after show of season one and two. I plan to buy three and four later this year.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2013A friend of mine alerted me to this animation targeted to adults. I had never heard of it. So I gave it a try. Its adult-oriented themes are interesting, to say the least. The level of animation is interesting in that all of the characters, environment, and objects in the cartoon are crudely drawn, which gives it that non-child feeling. This animation series is definitely not for children and for consenting adults only who have a sense of humor.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2014Absolutely the best, overlooked and under-rated....and damn funny, hilarious,
It was off the air for so long, and when it was playing, it was playing at 1 AM in the morning so a lot of people have really seen it.
But dig in, one of the sharpest and wittiest shows ever. The writing is top notch as are the voices (Jason Alexander is PERFECT as the lead, PERFECT..)
No laugh track, thank god (when will they learn...).
And something I always love about this show, is that is looks and feels like a comic strip.
One warning though, this is NOT a kids show, it is aimed at adults, no 5 or 6 year old children should be watching this show....
If you are looking for something worth your time and money, this is it. !!!
I can't think of anything else that is quite like it...
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2008Bought some crappy, foreign DVD copy of this most excellent show - the other reviewers are correct: excellent voice acting, writing, and amusing if not minimalist in its style of execution (Duckman has no eyes when his glasses fall off for example).
Duckman is a "Private Dick (for hire)", but doesn't even know what clues, evidence or even detective work all mean. He is emotional, judgemental, politically incorrect, abusive, controlling and yet he is also stupidly optimistic.
Highly recommended for laughing so hard, your abs might hurt! This review is for the show, as I await the DVD's with eager anticipation (or stupid optimism - see, it works!). Show is based on comic books of same name or vice versa.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2008Duckman is a unique series, which has never been duplicated before or since. Starring a duck detective who has his head in the wrong place and well meaning friends who he never appreciates, he runs headfirst into situations he is completely incapable of handling. A crass, loud, sex driven duck, at face value he might not seem someone you could fall in love with. But with his witty rants and occassional poignant devotion to his late wife, you can't help but wrap your arms around this show and not let go. Aided by Beatrice's theme, you truly begin to understand what it means to have a 'better half', someone that brings out the best in you. Definitely a good show!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2014This show is really very good. Five-jokes-per-second in a rapid-fire progression of carefully constructed dialogue belied by eye-achingly off-kilter animation and Frank Zappa music. An often merciless send-up of American society punctuated at times by deeply honest psychological introspection, a show with heart as well as (poorly animated) boobs, clearly written by people too smart to be working for television but not pulling any punches for it, creating a deceptively multilayered confection of cleverness you won't fully catch until the third viewing.
...and you probably never heard of it. [/hipster moment]
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2008It's about time this was released! DUCKMAN is, alongside REN & STIMPY one of the funniest animated series of the 90's. I've given it Five Stars purely based on the quality of the show - the writing is spot-on, the voice acting is top-notch and the humour itself is twisted - that's why I like it! Modern shows like Family Guy owe a lot to Duckman. Let's hope there are some good extras on this long overdue dvd set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, eleven years in the waiting.
I have been waiting eleven long years for the triumphant return of this eccentric television series. Apparently pigs DO know how to fly. That or global warming is having the reverse affect on hell. I was lead to believe that (after the death of Frank Zappa) this series would never see the light of day (as his estate owners fought over the preservation of his intellectual property). And, as it pertained to Duckman, that pretty much meant all of the musical accompaniment for the first season. I was also told that CBS didn't realize what a goldmine they were sitting on and finally dug deep into the archives to find this hidden gem.
Well, whatever the reason, its nice to see that seasons one and two will see the light of day once again. Here in Canada (the land that TV syndication forgot) we have been deprived of this wonderful program since its termination back in 1997.
Picture it: 1994. In an age where television networks were trying to capitalize on the adult cartoon genre (made popular by Matt Groening's The Simpsons), many attempts were made to sway the market share that Fox had enjoyed for five years. With shows like Ren and Stimpy, Dr Katz, Fish Police, Dinosaurs, God the Devil and Bob, Gary the Rat, The Critic, etc. The formula was simple: take a rising star (Jason Alexander, Jon Lovitz, French Stewart, etc) and use his voice in a situational animated comedy... with hilarious results. The appeal was limited. The shows were always touted as "The Simpsons meets X" and, sadly, once the shows never lived up to the writing style and quality of the Simpsons, these wonderful programs (minus Fish Police) vanished within a couple of years. (It should be noted that Fish Police was never wonderful).
Fox's only response: create more animated cartoons. And they were more successful at it than the other networks. The Simpsons, Futurama, King of the Hill, Family Guy, American Dad, the PJ's... (okay, not so much with the PJ's but you get the picture).
So what happens to great shows like Duckman? They get lost in the shuffle. Ratings are poor against the other animated shows. And for network execs... it's not about how great a show is, its how much revenue it generates. And therein lies the fate of Duckman. A great run that has finally resurfaced.
If you're a fan (and you'd pretty much have to be since I don't think anyone who wasn't around 11 years ago would see the appeal), this is an opportunity to rekindle your love for this spectacular program. Whether it was influence by drugs, written and directed ON DRUGS or merely sponsored by the pharmaceutical companies, this show is a great trip down a hazy memory lane. Sit back and enjoy.

For shorter version of the review: it's the Simpsons meets Film Noir meets detective/crime drama meets Salvador Dali. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best show ever made.
Damn worth it. It is tremendous genius. Topping this would be hard. Dwaaaaaaaah!
Worth watching, worth owning. . . .
It may seem crude on the surface, but in fact it is philosophically deep using blue and classy humor with beautiful artwork as tool to pass on the message. Madness is a lack of liberty, and this look on modern life is just fabulous.
