KUALA LUMPUR: The driver of a four-wheel drive, seen on dashcam footage hitting a family of four on a motorcycle, has been fined RM6,000 by a Magistrate's Court here.

Magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil imposed the fine on 22-year-old graphic designer Mohammad Harith Ismail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless driving on Wednesday (Dec 13).

He paid the fine.

Mohammad Harith was charged with recklessly driving his vehicle on the Besraya Highway, from the direction of Sungai Besi towards Balakong here, at 12.30pm on Tuesday (Dec 12).

The charge, under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, provides for a maximum fine of RM10,000 and up to 12 months' jail upon conviction.

In mitigation, the unrepresented Mohammad Harith said he did not commit the offence intentionally.

"I'm not from here and was not familiar with the road (at the location of the incident). I didn't run away or leave the victims there, but sent them to a hospital," he said.

It was reported earlier that dashcam footage had gone viral showing a motorcycle with two adults and two children being hit by a vehicle that suddenly changed lanes.

A subsequent police investigation found that the victims, aged between five and 34, were slightly injured and had received treatment at Hospital Serdang.

The driver of the vehicle was subsequently arrested.
