Video: Blackberry KickStart 8220 flip
Sure, you've read the KickStart 8220 preview and seen plenty of snaps, but video is still the only way to demonstrate some features of a device. Especially when it's not yet available in shops. Fortunately, Kevin Michaluk over at CrackBerry put together almost 9-minutes of moving pictures demonstrating two-handed Suretype thumbing, the 8220's more deeply inset trackball, and slick OS 4.6 action. He even went head-to-head with the iPhone 3G to demonstrate the KickStart's Internet browser. But enough with the words eh, video after the break.

Yeah, if the price is right I'll take three please.
El Taco @ Jul 30th 2008 9:08AM
Ya, I don't see why so many people give these a hard time. They're actually halfways stylish, and if it was on Verizon I would probably get one.

"Pimp'n"
Never thought I'd hear that in a Blackberry review.

This looks very good as it has alpha numeric keys in a small footprint. But the screen in all these gadgets are small, If LCD or TFT displays are made flexible or even wrappable. A larger Screen can be scrolled out of the phone like a Sail. OR even a Flexible white plastic screen that can be folded out like the old cameras, Then a micro projector in the phone forming a large image on the screen sail. It will work well while sitting on a park bench.

The hell? Go back to sleep...
diode3diode @ Jul 30th 2008 9:15AM
For 50 bucks, it seems big enough for me.
Johan S @ Jul 30th 2008 6:54AM
Good at least he looked at the browser for a few seconds.. which is more than most phone reviewers do. Anyway I would have liked to see how it side scrolls.
The phone doesn't look to impressive and since it's QVGA I'm not interested. I guess if it's dirt cheap it may have some use.

"He even went head-to-head with the iPhone 3G to demonstrate the KickStart's Internet browser"
Hmm - the screen is too small to render websites correctly in a state where you can actually use them effectively without scrolling around and zooming in and out - fail.
El Taco @ Jul 30th 2008 9:40AM
actually, it's about the same resolution as the curve, just flipped sideways.
jay.viz @ Jul 30th 2008 7:28AM
Are there any S60 or wm6 flip phones?
Rich @ Jul 30th 2008 8:58AM
S60 = Nokia N93i, N76, N75, 6290, 6650. If you want to push the definition, perhaps the E90 too.
All of the most advanced phones are candybar or sliders these days.

Kinda reminds me of the Moto KRZR crossed with the Pearl.
Paul @ Jul 30th 2008 8:12AM
DO WANT!
TareX @ Jul 30th 2008 10:23AM
Not for me. I'm sure many business BB users would die for a flip BB phone though.
I was VERY impressed by the browser, and youtube as well.
But from an unbiased viewpoint, I think there is way too many dead space on the device, both when closed and opened.
I'm sure it's going to be a very good deal, esp with the expected price. But for now, I think I'll choose between the E66 vs E71 till high-end Android phones hit pre-Christmas.
But I didn't expect the Kickstart could actually impress me.

"Enough with the words eh"? Get over yourself. . .

Our t-mobile reps keep calling this the "London", has anyone else heard this? They did confirm the low price point, but the name, i dont know if i like it.
J Pristel @ Jul 30th 2008 12:37PM
So what happens when you have 5 seconds to "key in" your mothers maiden name for your credit card company and they didn't put ABC on key 2, DEF on key 3, etc?
Yoav @ Jul 30th 2008 12:46PM
Man, I hate Blackberries.. They're so nice and cool but they ALWAYS leave behind the most important feature: A TOUCH SCREEN!
How primitive!
diode3diode @ Jul 30th 2008 1:19PM
It doesn't need any touchscreen, tsk. (points at the phone with a know-it-all finger)
Can't you see it has an Arc Reactor just like Iron Man. Primitive indeed, tsk!
Matt @ Jul 31st 2008 12:02AM
Do you read engadget often?
They've been developing/developed a BB Touch screen already, the Blackberry Thunder.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/13/blackberry-thunder-first-ever-live-pics-unearthed/
I'm not a Blackberry fan myself, I personally like the LG Dare, but i think that the Thunder looks pretty sharp.
Next time know waht you are talking about, or at least TRY
SoulinEther @ Aug 1st 2008 11:25PM
What makes a touch screen so great? I used to like Palm's PDAs better than most of the WinMos because of the touch screen, but I don't know anymore. The dpad and keys paradigm work pretty well for me for cell phones, and I find it easier to memorize a sequence of keypresses to get from a main menu to a specific part of my phone than to memorize where to tap...
Still, it is entirely possible that I am asinine.
emanuelle @ Jul 30th 2008 3:40PM
I hate Blackberry's but this one seems pretty solid especially to be a flip
