Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Feb. 9

In a vote that ended Feb. 9, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Feb. 4.

The Enquirer has mailed certificates for fall and winter winners through Dec. 15 to athletic departments. The next round will go out in mid-February.

The Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio boys basketball team: Taylor – Taylor defeated Madeira 83-75, Reading 69-45 and Clinton-Massie 58-51, extending its winning streak to five games with wins in eight of nine.

Ohio girls basketball team: Woodward – Woodward beat Aiken, Western Hills and Middletown Christian, improving to 13-6 with an 8-0 conference record.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team: Calvary Christian – The Cougars had a 39-38 overtime victory against the Cincinnati Warriors Homeschool squad on Jan. 29.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team: Villa Madonna – Villa Madonna’s lone game of the week was a 46-40 victory at Williamstown, ending a six-game skid.

Boys winter team: Campbell County swimming – At the Region 7 meet, the Camels totaled three minutes in time drop as a team.

Girls winter team: Ursuline Academy swimming – With 424 points scored at the conference meet, Ursuline Academy claimed the GGCL conference crown for the first time since 2020.

Ohio big-school boys basketball: Chandler Shields, Middletown – He had 20 points and seven rebounds in a win over Lakota West.

Ohio small-school boys basketball: Frank Latham, St. Bernard-Elmwood Place – He averaged 28 points and 11 rebounds in two league wins, including 34 points against Cincinnati Christian and 22 points, 14 rebounds against New Miami.

Ohio big-school girls basketball: Jamia Jones, Middletown – Her double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds led the Middies to a senior night win over Colerain.

Ohio small-school girls basketball: Jaida McGee, Cincinnati College Prep – She had 27 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists in a win over Shroder.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball: Peyton Morris, Calvary Christian – He had 19 points, nearly half the team’s total, in a 39-38 win over the Cincinnati Warriors.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball: Emarie Litton, Lloyd Memorial – She had a double-double of 12 rebounds and 11 points to lead the Juggernauts past Augusta.

Ohio big-school boys bowler: Johnathan Schneider, La Salle – He shot games of 197 and 268 to lead the Lancers to a quad-match win against the other three teams in the GCL-South.

Ohio small-school boys bowler: Chase Burns, Norwood – He shot games of 227 and 201 to lead the team in a win over Wyoming, and 211 and 203 in a win over Seven Hills.

Ohio girls bowler: Ava Haughey, Ursuline – She placed fourth overall in the GGCL tournament with a 528 three-game series.

Ice hockey player: Matt Langenderfer, St. Xavier – The senior scored three goals this weekend including his 21st and 22nd goals of the season in the Bombers final game of the regular season on Sunday. His 22 goals put him second on the team this season for goals scored and is fifth in the Capital Hockey Conference White Division.

Ohio boys swimmer/diver: Henry Stimson, Seven Hills – He won the 100-yard butterfly at the MVC championships in a time of 52.89 seconds, improving on his seed time by 0.19 seconds.

Ohio girls swimmer/diver: Natalie Gockerman, St. Ursula – She won the 200-yard freestyle and took second in the 500-yard freestyle at the Girls Greater Catholic League championships.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys swimmer/diver: Ty Dropic, Villa Madonna – He won the 200-yard individual medley and took second in the 500-yard freestyle at the Seventh Region championships.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls swimmer/diver: Audrey Bumgardner, East Central - She qualified for the state meet by winning the 50-yard freestyle at East Central's sectional meet. She also took second place in the 100-yard freestyle.

Boys wrestler: Max McCoy, Wilmington – The freshman started his duals with a 14-3 major decision over his Jonathan Alder opponent before a pin against Reading.

Ohio girls wrestler: Gabby Fenton, Taylor – Against Centerville, Fenton picked up a pinfall victory in 23 seconds.

Northern Kentucky wrestler: Rose Thomas, Conner – The junior had a pair of pins to reach the finals where she took a 15-12 decision to claim the 132-pound championship at the Region 3 tourney.
