Vimeo BANS Video Game Clips. ಠ_ಠ
news.cnet.com — People flocked to Vimeo for HD videos when Stage 6 shut down; where will the gamers go now?

- eibweneht, on 07/23/2008, -5/+5looks like they might already be going there: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?th ...
- AlfKayda, on 07/23/2008, -4/+6I prefer WeGame. The recording is much more convenient.
- Vektuz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2There doesn't appear to be any way to download original video (AVI) off GameVee
Therefore it sucks.
- ig33k010011, on 07/23/2008, -6/+21People are starting to go to GameVee.com. they do HD just like Vimeo but its only for gamers. seems like the best match....
Here's an HD sample from GameVee: http://www.gamevee.com/viewVideo/Diablo_III/PC/Dia ...- WTFWTG, on 07/23/2008, -8/+12Gamevee fanboy links to gamevee in Digg comment, gamevee continues sucking ass regardless.

- Murdats, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6why would you use a low res game that most hardcore gamers have an intrinsic dislike of to display the HD capabilities of a game video service?
- over9k, on 07/24/2008, -4/+3That's not HD.
- rednaxela825, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Why are you getting dugg down? It is HQ but not HD.
- jrbrewin, on 07/24/2008, -2/+3i dunno. when gamevee launched, they ran the digg nation competition. I checked them out, and found their quality to be pretty dire.. it was on par with youtube (before it did 'hq' video), as opposed to google video, which was more the quality i was going for.
but, the guys there listened to my comment, and upped their quality for the whole site, and re-transcoded my video in less than a day. I think that's pretty cool.
we (shaolinproductions.org) are looking at hosting all of our vids somewhere, so it's good to see that gamevee, and other sites (weegame, gametrailers, etc) are offering 'hd' streaming movies now-a-days. they all offer a good service, so i don't see the reason for hatred based on immature opinions. - Vektuz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2That's nice but you can't download the original (AVI or WMV for example) like you could with stage6 or vimeo, making gamevee completely useless.
Their "HQ" video player also noticably lags on this dual core when played full screen, something that a downloaded AVI, even 1600x1200, does not do. (Another good reason to support downloading).
So they have an excellent player but who cares, you can't download it and view it on your media machine so what's the point...
- WTFWTG, on 07/23/2008, -8/+12Gamevee fanboy links to gamevee in Digg comment, gamevee continues sucking ass regardless.
- mrbabyleem, on 07/23/2008, -9/+2If any of you guys above bothered to RTFA, you would know the author recommends gamers to use WeGame.
- SigmaDraconis, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1Nice whoosh. You missed the point entirely.
We know there's other sites to upload video game clips to and that the author of this blog piece recommended one of them. The issue people are having is with Vimeo banning video game clips at all.

- Elliottx, on 07/23/2008, -3/+27So the ONLY reason people used vimeo has been banned?
LOGIC! WE HAZ IT!- hexydes, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Vimeo has a huge following for the HDV camcorder crowd as well.
- Slashered, on 07/23/2008, -1/+33I don't understand this decision at all. From what I saw, the gaming videos on Stage6 (Vimeo) is one of the key reasons why the site got so popular in the first place. The ability to watch crazy frag highlight reels and speedruns in HD streaming was quite something and most gamers embraced the site. Citing a lack of "creative expression", I don't think the Vimeo staff truly realizes how much work goes into some videos/movies. They say they won't be deleting true Machinima projects but I have a feeling the line will become misconstrued by the admins and good videos will be taken down anyway. Furthermore, what's the big deal with videos that may have less 'artistic expression' than others, and how do you gauge such a thing? The difference between the Picasso painting and the picture my four year old cousin drew is still in the eye of the beholder. 100 million hits for LOLCATS anyone?
Out of the remaining sites, seemingly WeGame.com and GameVee.com, I like WeGame's design better and the site's seemingly stronger focus on PC games.- aetherboy, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Could the real reason be because traffic to game videos isn't profitable to them in terms of ad revenue? Gamers are pretty bad eyeballs in terms of clicking on ads since we are media-savvy and know how to spot (and ignore) ads pretty well, even when they are relevant to the content.
If gamers aren't clicking ads from gaming videos, they all it does is eat up bandwidth which costs them money. - TheCamino, on 07/26/2008, -0/+0
Um. It's their site, and they can do what they want.

- michaelphw, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4Ah Machinima is safe.. least that's something.
- Kaitsu, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1But I wonder how they separate machinima from pure play-content. One could just lavishly decorate a video that is still mostly just regular playing, and call it a machinima.

- Pusod, on 07/24/2008, -11/+1Quit yer whining and just go to youtube!
"But it's not in HD!"
The world is ending... OH NOES!
"But youtube sucks!"
I agree, but at least they'll take you in with open arms, so stop acting like a spoiled brat.- honeymustardn, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4Enjoy your 10 minute time limit
- Pusod, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1Are you nuts!? 10 minutes is more than plenty to show a video game clip. Were not talking about watching you beat the whole game. Give an example why you think 10 mins is not long enough to show a clip.
- honeymustardn, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Vimeo is banning gaming videos because of the amount of Let's Play videos mainly from the SA forums. There are like 20+ for each game - each video around 20 minutes. One member who was hosting a LP of Metroid Prime said they were using a TB of bandwidth. So anyway, yes, for an LP, 10 minutes is far too short.
- Stavrosian, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1When I was in the throes of MMORPG addiction I used to watch a lot of online videos of people taking on certain activities in my game of choice. Youtube is of such low quality that it wasn't really possible to tell what was going on, so it's not really an option for gamers.
Man, I miss Stage 6.
- honeymustardn, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4Enjoy your 10 minute time limit
- vegx, on 07/24/2008, -2/+6Based on the amount of Guitar Hero runs on Youtube, I can see where they're coming from.
- peestandingup, on 07/24/2008, -3/+10Guys, Vimeo isn't Stage6 & never was. And they dont want it to become another one or a youtube, full of dip ***** posting retarded videos & comments. Every video site doesnt have to be a free for all place to upload anything & everything.
Now I do think they're a bit snobby over there, but its their site & their intentions are clear. If you dont shoot & edit it yourself (and no, screen grabs dont count), then don't post it. Im sorry, but there's nothing creative about a screen grab of your fastest time on Sega's Out Run.- boombye, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Exactly. That is the whole purpose of the site, and the front page used to say as much. It's not for stupid video blogging or what someone did in a game. That's what other sites are for.
- Fafnir43, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2How about if you're taking video of the game and adding witty commentary over the top? How about if you're doing a speedrun? How about if you're posting Garry's Mod footage? (To answer your question: these are all banned.)
Granted it's not the Mona Lisa, but it's better than most of the ***** up there.- peestandingup, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2"Granted it's not the Mona Lisa, but it's better than most of the ***** up there."
It doesnt matter if you & I think its better. You cant judge this kind of thing on merit. Its either all or nothing.
Again, this is their rules to their site, so they can run it how they see fit. Its not like their arent plenty of places to host this sorta stuff. I think people are pissed mostly because its free & offers HD uploads. But we dont pay for their servers, they do.
- peestandingup, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2"Granted it's not the Mona Lisa, but it's better than most of the ***** up there."
- Galaxylander, on 07/24/2008, -8/+1Maybe we'll move to the better, more feature rich and better looking Viddler then.
- peestandingup, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5Yeah, I just love comment popups on my damn video timeline, distracting viewers.
Also, Viddler = No HD.
- peestandingup, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5Yeah, I just love comment popups on my damn video timeline, distracting viewers.
- mikeprasad, on 07/24/2008, -6/+14Dude, just use WeGame, they rock.
- unrealmp3, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2Why does he get burried ? WeGame is an alternative, not the best one but still.
- WhoDoneIt, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Vimeo also banned a real estate agent friend of mine for putting up personal real estate video blogs on his site. These weren't listings or advertising, these were just personal reflections of the market around him and his town. The funny part was, it was all in part of an Ubertor package he was told he had.
Ubertor is a company that helps realtors create engaging websites. This was supposed to be a package deal with Vimeo.
The agent sent out an email to them explaining the dilemma and they wrote back and apologized and put up a few of his past videos, but not all of them.
Bite me Vimeo. - Totz83, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8Vreel.net has a gaming section
http://beta.vreel.net/index.php?q=channels&id=73 - sadpoti, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5I support vimeo's decision. I go there for creative videos that have thought and time put into them and I for one don't want it to turn into the cesspool that youtube is.
- iBlinkalot, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1This is a fair enough decision. They may suffer for it, but ultimately its their business and they can make it what they want. I personally support the idea and like that they know what they want to be. Besides, some other site will cash in. Like Pornotube picking up where Youtube lacks.

- BugMeNot2, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5GameVee does have higher resolution video than WeGame, but WeGame upped their video quality a couple days ago. It's higher than YouTube quality
Hopefully WeGame will up their quality and resolution to meet or exceed GameVee's.
I'll stick with WeGame, though, as I prefer their site design and community. - rednaxela825, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2Yes but GameVee loads very slowly and the video player just sucks.

- Vektuz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2gamevee doesn't allow downloads of the original like vimeo did...
- joshtj, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1How about someone mirrors exactly what blip.tv does, but allows gaming footage... Vimeo quality was already poor, and the alternatives aren't that much better either. Stage6 was nice, but the DivX codec isn't really comparable to MP4.
- Cirrius, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2“I feel a very tiny disturbance in the Force, as if tens of voices from a very small subsection of the internet suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.”
- peterfnet, on 07/24/2008, -3/+1youtube
- Sess, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1People should check out stagevu.com
Once they get their act together that might be a "Stage6" come back in a way. Its down right now due to upgrades, hope the upgrades improve the speed a bunch, otherwise it will be a bust. - agent42, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3noobflicks.com has been doing x264 HD for almost a year. Old.
- Fragalishus, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2I'll second that. Damn good quality at noobflicks. Only site that does proper full screen, too.
- BugMeNot2, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Xfire.com has some really nice quality video, too. I watched some 1680x1050 Age of Conan videos and the quality was insane. It was almost as if the game was playing on my computer. The video played almost in real-time, too, on my 150 KB/s connection.
- DigitalBrian, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I can not come up with anything more boring than watch other people playing video games, I welcome Vimeo's decision here. Video games are not a spectator sport, it is a hands on sport.
- k00pa, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1What is the reason?
- kaniz, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3It's their site, and they can say what kind of content, users and community they wish to build. Just because its, there, you can sign up, and upload - does not mean they need to carter to everyone.
I used to run a dial-up BBS way-back when. Initially, I had the catch-all BBS : I had games, forums, files - and tried to do the "please everyone with everything", and aimed for quantity over quality. As I matured as a sysadmin, and my BBS matured - I decided to start shifting the focus. I wanted to push for high-quality forums where users could discuss ideas about programming, technology, security, etc.
Initially, I tried putting a "must have X posts per Y days" to play the games on my BBS. While this increased the traffic to the forums, it created too many "Hey, whats up?" posts as people tried to pad their ratio to get to the games. So, I simply removed all of the door games from my BBS.
The end result: Less users, less traffic, but higher quality traffic. Sure, I lost the users who simply wanted to log on, play games then log off - but those are not the users I wanted anyways. They were simply eating up resources and preventing the users I wanted from being able to access my system.
Vimeo putting a ban onto game video clips seems to be a similar thing : They don't want to become a dump-site for gaming clips, its not the user base they want, its not the community they want. Don't like it? then find another video sharing site that DOES want you. - deviationer, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1yay lets give a big round of applause for vimeo shooting themselves in the foot. You will be just another nameless face in the crowd now.
- bdickason, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2I hate to say it, but telling your users how to use your site and enforcing it is a recipe for disaster :( Vimeo is great as a platform but as a destination site? Not so much.
- zboyet, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1Some sites are for a specific reason. What if deviantart.com let you upload just any damn picture you found on the internet?
- mjpark, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1where will the gamers go now?
Home. Nobody wants to watch you play a video game. - jwloh, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Vimeo truly rocks as a platform to showcase creativity amongst the video content that people create, and not some crappy home-made video that makes its way to YouTube. I support their enforcement of restricting such videos from being uploaded. I'm not saying that these gaming videos degrade the content that Vimeo currently hosts, but it's not what the community is built up for. Vimeo is the video version of Flickr, and not it should not turn out to be the Photobucket for video content. That's where Youtube comes in.
- unrealmp3, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2ಠ_ಠ
- FLarsen, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2`ಠvಠ/´
- DirtyWorker, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1They should just go out and say "Hey, we don't want gaming videos on our site." and it would all be ok. But seriously, hiding behind "CREATIVITY" is perhaps the stupidest excuse I've heard. Defining it is like arguing which is better strawberry cake or meat pie.
P.S. Vimeo has recommended we watch a video of two kids playing in a pool. How creative! - topbob, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3***** *****.
The internet has failed me again. - schzx, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2Vimeo is full of nothing but clichey feel good videos of nature etc, maybe time lapsed. If that's creative expression I don't want it.
- schzx, on 07/25/2008, -0/+0Also, video games are for children.
- nunofgs, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2I hereby vow to never watch a vimeo video again. By hiding behind "CREATIVITY" you are instead stifling it. Good job idiots.
- svensksvamp, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1Creative by editing gameplayvideos?
I guess you're into motivational posters too..
- svensksvamp, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1Creative by editing gameplayvideos?
- heysuburbia, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1This SUCKS!
I lost about 100 game videos on YouTube because I posted a 10 second clip of the Wii being played at the Oscars, and now I have to download 12 gigs or so from Vimeo, re-upload them to another site, then update all the pages on my site that use them. Then let other sites that embed my Vimeo videos know that their videos won't work anymore. *****.
My best friend works for Busted Tees (IE Connected Ventures, which run Vimeo as well). I'll see if I can get any inside info on this.- HueytheFreeman, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2... And now you understand the problem of having other people host your content.
- RyanWilliams, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2I maintain that GameVideos.com is an absolutely superb site for uploading videos. Not only can you upload whatever resolution you like as long as it's under 100mb, it suppports .AVI, .WMV, .MPG, .FLV, and .MOV. For example, this is a video I uploaded:
