Nuanced Understanding of Stigma and Discrimination: The event provides a platform to explore the complexities of stigma and discrimination, allowing attendees to gain insights into the various forms it takes and its impact on individuals and communities.
Celebration of Diversity: Embracing diversity is at the core of this event, which celebrates the richness of human differences across race, sexual orientation, age, and other dimensions.
Exploration of Historical Roots: Attendees delve into the historical origins of categorizations based on race, sexual orientation, and age, examining how these constructs have shaped cultures and communities over time.
Awareness of Destructive Impact: The event sheds light on the destructive consequences of racism, heterosexism, and ageism, fostering critical thinking and empathy among participants.
Empowerment of Teenagers: By understanding the roots and impact of stigma and discrimination, the event aims to empower the audience to challenge prejudice and contribute to building a more inclusive and equitable world.
Platform for Education and Reflection: Serving as a platform for education and reflection, the event urges attendees to be proactive agents of change in dismantling the chains of stigma and fostering understanding, respect, and equality.
Encouragement of Critical Thinking: Participants are encouraged to question societal expectations and challenge the stigma associated with various aspects of human diversity, fostering a mindset of critical inquiry and empathy.
Inspiration for Action: Through inspirational messages and examples, the event inspires participants to champion inclusivity and work towards creating a world where everyone is treated with respect and dignity, irrespective of their group membership.
Call to Be Agents of Change: By fostering an environment of acceptance and understanding, the event aims to motivate participants to become agents of change, actively breaking the chains of stigma and contributing to the creation of a more inclusive and compassionate society.
Overall, the "Diversity Appreciation Fundraiser" seeks to instill in its audience a deep understanding of diversity, empathy towards others, and a commitment to challenging injustice and fostering positive social change.
Proceeds will support further research conducted by the BRAID Lab at SJNY that seeks better understanding of health consequences of stigma and discrimination in marginalized groups. Funds will be used for example to compensate our research participants for their time and effort, thus, the proceeds will directly support marginalized people.
