High surf scuttles TheBoat on Oahu
Pacific Business News (Honolulu)
Oahu's ferry service, called TheBoat, canceled its 9 a.m. run Monday due to high surf conditions.
Honolulu transportation officials say a decision on the ferry's afternoon service will be made just before the scheduled 2:50 p.m. run between Kalaeloa Harbor on Oahu's West Side and Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu.
"Surf conditions could change, and it could get better," said project manager Darin Mar.
According to the National Weather Service, surf along south-facing shores was 2 to 4 feet Monday, and expected to decrease to 2 to 3 feet Tuesday.
TheBoat runs three round trips each morning and three round trips each afternoon Mondays through Fridays.
The transit time on the 149-passenger vessels is one hour.
TheBoat is a one-year ferry demonstration project supported through federal funds to help alleviate Oahu motor vehicle traffic.
